Carl, I believe you are right to be nervous about her lip piercing.
Moreover, so should the woman herself be: I’d suggest that anyone considering lip or tongue piercings research the risks: infection, nerve damage, endocarditis, disease transmission, gum disease, and the list goes on.
I’m sure there are many fellow readers of this blog who will protest that this person has a perfect right to alter her body and that she may have thought long and hard about her choice. Some readers may further say that it is precisely her intention to make those who view her feel at least a bit of discomfort, a frisson of shock, an echo of the (real or implied) pain she willingly inflicted on herself to achieve this look or statement.
I’d defend her right to control her own body, question whether she has really considered all of the long-term potential health risks vs. the perceived benefits, and add that to this beholder-in-whose-eye-is-beauty, she has defaced her lovely face, and it makes me sad to see this desecration.
