Yesterday I received three hate emails from weirdo’s that think I wrote an article about men wearing leggings.

Personally I don’t care if men wear leggings but I feel really sad for the guys that feel compelled to write stupid emails about something so frivolous.

Are they really afraid that they may soon have to make the decision of which leggings look best with their sportcoats?

One guy said I wouldn’t last long in his office…..well, I run in leggings, I think that means i would kick his ass twice as fast.

Sorry for the rant but I hate the fear the runs some peoples lives.

If i could figure out how to document it I should wear a pair of leggings with a sportcoat ,like in the Marni show, and capture and how people react. i would have to do it in a city like Philly or Pittsburgh.

Wasn’t that Cameo’s whole look back in the 80′s?

Has anyone seen the article that these weirdo’s are talking about?

The only thing I can think of is in the New York Times there were some pictures from Milan. But I don’t see leggings mentioned anywhere. There was one guy in a knitsy/ski looking outfit.

Overall that writer pointed out that the tailoring was great and the collections shown pretty good.

Hi-larious. I believe he/they are referring to Godfrey Deeny’s FWD review of the Marni show, which also posted on Yahoo (, as Fashion Wire Daily also got similar hate mail. Geez. Don’t hate the playa, hate the gams! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

E-mail and the internet are amazing creations. Yet , it provides cover for psychos who have nothing better to do than send their fear through usually poorly spelled rants. Who cares if men wear leggings? Sart, sorry your day was littered with their spam.

I saw a photo from a runway show with an article “Legggings for Men”, but didn’t read it on DrudgeReport 1/21/07. Don’t know who wrote it either. Sorry.

    Men in tights… F’ Yeah!
I wrote an entry in my blog, like 1 year ago with this title.

Maybe this one due to time proximity is the article about the Marni show where leggings where the staple.

I’ve just googled “men wearing leggings” and found this article published yesterday by no other than … Godfrey Deeny! .

what kind of “leggings” are they talking about?

why shouldn’t a guy wear one of the above?

just because it would make him look like
    -gladstone gander?
    -a bavarian gamekeeper?
    -olivia newton-john?

curious to see how the story unfolds ….

I don’t know why people are even surprised that leggings are becoming popular for men when you can’t even walk around soho, or WILLIAMSBURG without seeing men where tight-tight jeans that look like leggings already. Heidi Slimane built an empire out of it.

I’m sorry you ran into a group of idiots who can’t seem to respect another’s opinion (even if it wasn’t your own). Keep up the good work though.

Apparently, your e-stalkers are not familiar with the “show” aspect of fashion.

I love that a fadtastic new trend evokes such reaction from people… this is what fashion is all about: challenge the norms with your own innovative intervention. So, kudos to those who love the male leggings, and kudos to those who hate them.

homophobia is an annoyingly chronic this in the states especially (i think). myself, i don’t care much for the men in tights look. i do, however, enjoy it when men feel free enough to emphasize their shape – as women do and do and do too much

    Seriously. I’ll get you a cameraman. :)

    January 22, 2007 at 2:36 pm

Awww… poor Pittsburgh. I live here- and I can assure you that fashion is so unheard of that no one would care if you showed up in leggings- they would probably assume they were tight sweatpants- a perfectly acceptable local fashion statement. But, you’re always welcome here. I’d be glad to show you around what we do have- which is a city with a small town attitude, beautiful riverside parks, a better-than-decent arts scene for a city of this size, and a phenomenal view from Mt. Washington. Oh, and the people here are pretty friendly, if I do say so myself. And we can laugh at ourselves… thanks for the smile.

    Definitely the Yahoo article:

A link to it appeared on the “featured” section of the Yahoo main page with the words “Men in Leggings?!” just yesterday (or was it the day before?). How you got associated with the article, I have no idea, but sorry! The photo from the Marni show is still on Yahoo’s ‘most emailed photos’ top ten – so clearly it has created a bit of a stir.

  38. Jessica M.

    January 22, 2007 at 4:53 pm

To answer my own quandary: The reason you were associated with the Godfrey Deeny article that appeared on Yahoo is because when one Googles “Godfrey Deeny”, the first two pages to appear are yours, with the tag lines: “Godfrey Deeny, Fashion Journalist, Sartorialist”, and “Godfrey Deeny, Rogueish Style”

I’m thinking this is both good and bad news: Bad news because flame-writing morons can’t read and go for the first thing to pop up, good news because your pictures are, overall, more linked-to in the world than even the man’s own work. Yet another confirmation of your popularity. . .

truly a sad reflection of our culture at large and the maddeningly restrictive attitudes of men’s fashion how such an idea can cause such vitriol.

the persons who wrote you obviously know squat about the history of fashion. particularly prior to dandyism and the great masculine renunciation.

I don’t care for leggings on guys, but being hateful like that is rude. I love to jog in leggings even though I’m a female, and I know that most serious runners and other athletes (manly men) wear spandex in some form. But it is true that some of the designer jeans and those worn by guys like Jude Law are stinking tight, so I don’t get it.

Just because you didn’t find anything photo worthy on your short walk through Rittenhouse, doesn’t mean we don’t understand style or taste in Philly. We’re not all cheesesteak-chomping, Rocky-loving unfashionable people. Can’t speak for Pittsburgh, though.

Hahaha! Its crazy how some people can get all worked up on a question of preference. Those guys would have had a hard time for a couple of centuries. Men, real men :) wore tights and “leggings” during the Renaissance, the Middle Ages,… even soldiers of ancient Rome had on a kind of short legging.
I hope it did not ruin your fun Scott. Keep on opening peoples minds!

I only mentioned Philly and Pittsburgh because they are both big cities and easy to get to from New York.

Typical close minded losers, their manhood defined by their fears. I wear tights when I run, heck I wear a wetsuit when I work, kind of the same thing, right? Woud I wear them out on the street as a fashion statement? Um, not my cup of tea, I don’t even go for the tight jeans, though if you can carry it off more power to you. Fashion is what you want it to be, and what it boils down to is that you like what you’re wearing…haven’t we learned anything from “Ugly Betty”? haha
