Vintage Photos

This is my beloved Grandmother, Ella, c. late 1930s, as a University student. I am told she was helping to collect bird specimens for Cornell University.  I love her confidence, and that she wore a skirt and heels for fieldwork!

If you missed my initial post, here are the instructions again.

- The subject line of the email should read “Vintage Photo”

- The photos will only be posted here on the blog, so the file size can be very small (no bigger than 700kb). I DO NOT need hi-res images, they take too long to download.

- Writing a little something about the image you send will make your entry much more interesting for all of us.

- Email your photos to: [email protected]

I love this! Great picture. I do the same thing from time to time and I get the weirdest looks from people. But here she looks so confident and relaxed.

Women in earlier days somehow seemed to have more grace and strength than women today.
I was told my grandmother would wear trousers and silk shirts with high heels, before grabbing her lab coat and heading off to the laboratories at King’s College London……just so she could be as tall as the other students in her class, who obviously were all men.

I happened upon your blog through my amazing niece, studying fashion at SCAD now… that I love vintage photos, I was drawn to this one… that I work at Cornell, and just took a run by the Lab of Ornithology yesterday is quite a coincidence! Cheers to you and your beautiful grandmother! (may we re-post this on the Cornell site?)

Thank you so much, everyone – I feel this photograph captures my Grandmother’s spirit so well; she was an enormous inspiration to me, & to my brother who is presently a Biology Professor at a SUNY in Northern New York.
Unfortunately, a lot of the details concerning this photo are a mystery, & my Grandmother is not alive to tell the story. My brother believes this was taken post-grad when she was already a school teacher, so perhaps she was participating in a summer project or course through Cornell or a SUNY. And Gina, thank you much – my brother has already posted the pic on your facebook page; reposting is absolutely fine by me. Cheers & thanks to your niece!
& Bombchell, thank you – greatly appreciate the compliments!

That is lovely. But how useful could she be dressed like that? You would have to either ruin your clothing, or else avoid actually getting the specimens. I am sorry, but my guess is she stayed in the boat while others(men) got out of it and worked. In fact its not a guess. You COULDN’T get into the brush dressed like that and remain looking like that. Your clothing would be ripped and shoes stained. Unless the birds chose to live in the middle of a lawn. I would rather look less ladylike, and be of more use.
