Vintage Photos

I could not resist sending you this piece of “old fashion photography”.

This photo was taken by my grandfather in New York, probably in 1968.

He spent most of his life travelling around the world, and sparked my own passion for photography.

Wow. Fashion is like a pendulum. Would have never been able to tell this was an old photo if it weren't for the backstory and maybe that old truck in the background. Excellent.

does it have to be vintage? i mean, the majority of the photos you've gotten and posted are from the 40-60s. can't it just be old?

    really nice photo btw. :P

While the man mopping his head with his hankerchief kind of ruins the shot, he is indicative of another era when people carried around hankerchieves in their pockets for those sweaty (or teary) moments.

Mr Schuman, my forst impression of this image was that it was you and Garancé. But then it wasn´t (obviously) but you two do look as striking as the two subjects.

I think the greatest part of this picture is the man walking past- not only is he wearing a hat (which is rare), but he's using a handkerchief, which is probably as rare as the hat. He's fantastic, from his hat, to his pocket square, all the way down to his cuff length. Great picture.

Just saw an exhibition with photo's by Paul Fusco that he made on the funeraltrain of Robbert Kennedy in 1968. Hundreds of photo's of people standing along the trainway from NY to Washington. Very impressive and a valuable document of that time. I recognized 1968 immediately in the photo of your grandparents.

ps. Very curious of the Amsterdampics

    Great shot.
Funny enough, knowing that it dates back to 1968, I think the photo hasn't really aged all that much, not only in terms of resolution, but also regarding the couple.
Sure, you can tell it's not 2011 clothing, and yet, they still look very modern to me.

    Dear Mr. Schuman,

I just thought it'd be pretty cool to actually comment on The Sartorialist even though I've actually never took time to 'comment' and give my opinion on it. First things first, I LOVE what you've created, and I enjoy every photo you take and the ones you post from other inspiring people whom are close to you.

Now, I've obsessed so much over 'street fashion' and 'detailing' in an outfit as much as you do. Now, one of my recent favorite posts from you was the "On the Street…Tompkins Square Park, New York" where you made a Givenchy reference. Thank you for The Sartorialist- I look forward each day for a new post!

    Michael Anthony

Thank you for taking your time :)

PS: I recall a time where you had a book signing- I think it was @The Promenade, and my friend took a picture with you. haha I was pretty jealous.
and another favorite post was how you added in how Giorgio Armani looked better in front of a black background. thank you again.

WOW. This photo transports me to a time and a place, just like magic. I love the quality of the light, their silhouettes against the almost fairytale towers in the background, and the angled lines made by the sidewalk. I love this photo! Its cinematic, and just draws me right in. My favourite, so far, of the vintage photos.
