The Sartorialist “Must Have” List For Summer 2006

It is much more difficult to be a Sartorialist in the melting heat of summer than any other season of the year.

To beat the heat, I asked one of the coolest guys I know , Tommy Fazio – the new Fashion Director of Bergdorf Goodman Men’s, to put together a list of what I should be looking to buy for this summer.

1. The perfect 2-button cotton suit in tan. When well tailored, all men look Professional, Stylish and most of all handsome. This suit can take you thru all occasions in the spring/summer season.

2. The perfect wing-tip brown shoe. Nothing says style more than a well-polished wing tip. Worn with your suit pant just the right length, with or without socks, it looks stylish and modern.

3. Aviator sunglasses. All guys looks great in an aviator sunglasses. Oliver Peoples has the best new shape. Smaller in size and so chic.

4. Charvet custom-made shirt. Fits like a dream and shows a sense of style and confidence.

5. The Bergdorf Goodman rice stitch v-neck sweater in navy. The perfect weight for all seasons. The new basic for men.

I love this question “…what I should be looking to buy for this summer”. I feel that the Aviators might be a bit out of step, but anything is better then plastic wrap arounds.

Excellent list. The Charvet custom-made shirt is my favourite item.

I wish that more [young] men dressed in such a classy way!

A brown wingtip sounds like more of a must have fall item. Perhaps a brown-white spectator, a tan semi-brogue blucher or tan split-toe might be more summery.

I like the plaid sportcoat behind him very much.

What’s your opinion on white bucks? Are they too nerdy? I wear them every summer.

In Des Moines, Iowa, an insurance and banking town, only corp execs and the like wear wingtips. We artists and entrpreneurs want to express ourselves differently. Here is why…

Though many of us prefer classic style in the evening or when the days activities call for it, wearing the wingtip is akin to a lack of imagination, maybe even a selling out to a form of corporate colonization thus, we prefer other classic or bespoke shoes that reflect the more discerning tastes of the creative class.

Granted, there are alot more of these conservative corporate type guys around here than artists and maybe this is the BG demographic.

How about your/his top five classic/timeless shoes, with pics?

If you wanted a more contemporary alternative to brown wingtips, these Nike Dunk wovens in brown/bone/white might fit the bill:

argos, what you just said was “I’m a non-conformist and so are all my friends.” You are conforming to what everyone around you looks like. That is not being an individual. Wearing wing-tips among artists who all look alike would make you an individual.
I work in advertising with “creative” people. They all dress alike. Pumas, t-shirt, track jacket, and jeans. Soooooo original.

anon-2:20pm Yeah, I hear what you are saying though there are too many choices thus, we artists, non-conformists all, do not look alike as is the case with the ad group you are referring to. I happen to like wingtips. I refer to them as “street shoes.”

Tee- some of us get around a bit…

Agree 100% on the wingtips, and no one should think that they have to be worn only with the aforementioned tan suit: I wear black Vass wingtips with jeans and glen plaid all summer long.
