    Looks like fun!

I’m looking for the faces of female designers. Are there none to be found?

It’s a men’s lunch! That’s why there are no women?! Have you as a woman never gone out with just your girlfriends? For lunch? For dinner?
Allow us to do the same thing!

I agree that men should just drink wine and eat food only in the company of other men.

        March 30, 2013 at 3:37 pm

Agreed. I hate this constant measuring up of men and women. Sometimes men want to be with each other. They used to have clubs! And those few women left (like me) who aren’t busy looking for mens’ clubs to bust like to get together too.

Beautiful work! I broke down in tears… “My Way” was my deceased father’s favorite song. He was born in 1916 and he was a WWII American Navy Veteran. He passed away in 2006.

The first thing that springs to my mind watching this is “men’s club,” which is unfortunate because that’s obviously not the point. But I also follow Garance’s website, and I’m struck by the breakdown in gender when it comes to ‘fashion lunches.’ It seems to me that fashion is becoming less gender-specific — take one of your own recent posts, “Old School Loden” as an example. I’m sure the women and men wearing these coats would have something to say to each other about them. And there are plenty of runway shows today espousing ideas and concepts equally applicable to both genders. Maybe, for some reason, no women sprang to mind when you were putting together your guest list . . . but isn’t it worth thinking about what that reason is, and perhaps making an effort to do something about it?

Absolutely unjustifiable to hold such an event with only men. So backward and such a shame, despite the clothes being beautiful.

    • robert

      March 27, 2013 at 9:37 am

It’s a man’s lunch! Are we as men not afforded the same rights and privledges as women lunching with only women?! How sexist!

      • Rachel

        March 27, 2013 at 1:13 pm

Agreed, everything in life should not be subjected to a political agenda. I would hope none of us view our every action through a political lens. This is a group of men who have been invited by their friend to enjoy a meal, drinks, and camaraderie. This is one man’s view of his world, which he so graciously shares with us on this site. The images and the rare comments by Mr. Schuman clearly indicate he is deeply passionate about the sensitive portrayal of his milieu. Never once have I felt that Mr. Schuman has objectified women, or any subject of his lens. Rather, I feel he approaches his world with an obvious love of beauty, without hard and fast preconceived opinions on what that is or is not, and celebrates beauty in its many and varied incarnations. In fact I find Mr. Schuman’s professional eye very kind and generous. To me, this film captured a very beautiful moment among a group of people, who happened to be beautifully dressed men, who clearly respected, appreciated and very much enjoyed each other’s company. It is lovely to witness people absorbed in conversation, laughing and singing together, sharing a meal together. I believe Mr. Schuman captured a moment that we all wish for ourselves, a sense of belonging and camaraderie with others.

          March 27, 2013 at 9:44 pm

Very well clarified. Thank you. Yes, too many people have to make mountains out of mole hills or, in this case, TRY to make something out of absolutely nothing. Everything doesn’t need to be politicized or brought into your agenda. I wonder if Mr. Clarke’s wife gets to have a girls’ night out – with JUST the girls, or does he feel the need to tag along because well, because he should just get to? There is nothing at all “backward” about this lunch as Mr. Clarke suggests. There is, however, such a thing as going too far – in this case, with being so overly PC as to be ridiculous. Anyway, what’s wrong with a little “backward” from time to time in some instances? They were the “good old days” for a reason. We’ve all come a long way and progressed enough to see this for what it is – a beautiful gathering of guys (and, sorry, but JUST the guys) to have some “guy time” together and talk about things that they have in common. Sheesh!

Great! A fusion of Film noir and Italian Neorealism. “La Dolce Vita 0.2” I was spec ting Mastroniani to walk in at anytime. A color version sometime soon?

    • Aussiegus

      March 27, 2013 at 7:54 am

      Why film noir?

      • jc

        March 27, 2013 at 1:12 pm

Film noir is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography.

Scott, what an incredible video. The choice of black and white brings out every detail in this piece. I love the mixtures and textures and the fedoras! I’ve got to get my hats in order and start wearing them. I had a grand laugh listening to the gentlemen sing.

I love it ! It’s very pleaseful to watch ! I like that the B&W style makes us think that everyone ‘s dressed similar, and their very own hairstyle seems to be the greatest key of distinction. I would love to see the colors of their suit as well…

I was covering the video … fantastic atmosphere that has been created in this typical Italian trattoria in Florence. the incredible combination of style, the charm of these people and the details of each day … in Italy, I am Italian, culture is above all this: the way of life, good food, good wine. This is part of an ancient culture.
congratulations on your decision to shoot the movie in black and white
I almost felt an atmosphere of the past, the past, the sweet life of the neo-realism Fellini, De Sica
Scott I hope that Italy will remain forever in your heart…

    Gian Luca M

I would like to have the chance to see the real colors of the gang.
Even if I perfectly understand the elegance, and some sort of ‘dolce vita touch’ of a black and white film, I would prefer the video in colors, in way to give a bigger bite to the grapes.

    March 27, 2013 at 10:23 am

Barbera, for me at least, is the only one who does not look as if he is wearing a costume. He wearings look natural, and then everyday classic. Pics of his gear would fit in with any era, any time.

This is so good, and the men so well dressed, may I suggest Mr Sart sets up a completely separate version of The Sartorialist just on men’s clothing? Call it ‘Uomo-Sart’ or such like. There are lots of these sorts of guys all over the globe. I know of many where I live in London.

As some mentioned before the first thing that came to my mind was that, they are all men. I know the previous ones were also all men, but this time it struck me. No problem with it of course, but I would be curious to know why? What is that only men can discuss? So what gets decided over lunch? It looks a bit like a fashion/style mafia :)

Trattoria Cammillo was my restaurant of choice during the years I lived in Florence. In my opinion their tagliata is hard to beat. The waiter in the bowtie (at 2:21) was always very kind to me and I’m happy to see he’s still there.

I always enjoy seeing these stylish gentlemen eating their lunch! There’s nothing like lingering over a long meal with like-minded friends.

The video reminds us that style is equally distributed between young and older – something the fashion industry just doesn’t seem to get as they focus solely on young markets.

It’s a charming video. I have no problem with the fact that they are all men. But what is the average age of these men? Wouldn’t it be nice to see a luncheon with stylish women of the same age? Wouldn’t that be refreshing?

I wish the video was longer with more shots of this well-dressed group of men. Also wish they can create a video of influential women in fashion, but there are so many, finding just 25 would be impossible. Plus nothing beats a group of charming men getting along over a meal!

Awesome video! When I saw it, I thought of my African American father(WWII vet- saw combat on the European stage)-Anyway, he dressed like a man bred and born in Europe. His boots were made at Berlutti in Paris($2K a pair and that was in the 70′s), Saville Row shirts, and custom suits that were understated. Watching these guys lunch reminded me of my father’s commanding presence at the White Elephant in Rome, and Chez Francis or La Brasserie in Paris, or some other such cool, laid back European resto where you can sit, eat, drink and share stories for hours(no waiters to bus your table out of the way– it’s all about enjoying life. This clip brought all these images back into my mind. Thanks for sharing.
