I was wondering the same, and after this season will he continue to do so, or is this just a gimmick to get people talking.

I love Rick Owens’ outside-the-box thinking! Incorporating performance and using nontraditional runway models proved effective and memorable! These photos capture the energy of the show so well!

Stepping is part of a long & proud tradition in many historically African-American fraternities and sororities. You just called it a “freak show.” You may wish to do some serious thinking about that.

      • marta

        October 3, 2013 at 9:40 pm

whatever here is not about the black’s women tradition, it’s about fashion, and i dont think this kind of “thing” is situable for the androgynous product rick’s industry sell…

I can imagine some of these outfits doing quite well on the street in my urban, gritty, neighborhood.
It’s also interesting to see how the pieces move while being worn doing something other than a runway strut.
    What a nice change.

      • Phoebe

        September 27, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Why is it ridiculous or humiliating?! Step is a huge part of black sorority and fraternity culture. Highlighting something so uniquely American at a European show is pretty incredible.

        • Erica

          September 28, 2013 at 8:02 pm

I’m not put off by the size, color or shape. As many other people have commented, how refreshing. It’s the clothes.

      • Wayde

        October 1, 2013 at 1:23 am

Why is this embarrassing? It is a designer’s vision, his own way of creating a spectacle and mood for a presentation. It speaks volumes about the collection; the strength of women, teamwork, attitude and personality, precision the list goes on. what we all need to understand is that no matter how banal or distasteful we may initially find a show it is the designer’s vision and that is to be respected.

    • F

      September 27, 2013 at 11:21 am

Absolutely ridiculous would be your comment.

  35. Zazie

    September 27, 2013 at 8:48 am

    I loved it!
It touched me and inspired me.
The idea is brilliant – and now i do want a few outfits pronto.
I don’t know why the show moved me so much: the powerful message these women sent, the clothes which in some cases looked amazing (want!) and in same cases looked awful but made a statement, the music coming from the stomping ladies, the outraged looks on some ladies in the front row, the amused look of others, who even started stomping a bit…

(But I want to know: what does the sartorialist think?
It’s too easy to let your (great) pics do the talking. I’m curious to know the opinion of someone who was there live, and that knows a bit or two about fashion more than myself!)

Inventive, dynamic and provocative! It just made me love Rick Owens even more. In comparison, Hedi Slimane’s attempt to change YSL seemed uncreative and craven, though in his defense, I must say it was hard for a comeback kid who’s not designing for his own eponymous label.

Amazing. This made me all weepy. Using women with different body types (such as these gorgeous and powerful average sized women) and different ethnic backgrounds should be the norm in fashion shows. It makes things much more interesting and beautiful. I loved Rick Owens already and love him so much more for this!!!

rick owens seems to always put on an off-kilter performance. I remember seeing some shots of Mr. Schumann’s where a metal band played as the models walked. That was very cool, and I can’t wait to find the video of this one on YouTube or something!

I loved the women, dance, movement, fierceness — but I’m not “getting” the fashion. This is a fashion show. The black outfits — yes, they do look like something one would wear … but nothing exceptional. The white and beige outfits, I don’t get.

Why not execute this brilliant concept with more brilliant clothes? If this is referencing African heritage, it may be in the women and the movement, but it’s certainly not in the fashion. Okay, what am I missing?

I know there’s a statement being made with the clothes, but I’m not getting it.

  50. TJ

    September 27, 2013 at 5:02 pm

it made me weepy, too. so often designers are ‘inspired by’ certain cultures, but the influencers are usually nowhere to be found. i don’t know if the clothes were inspired by steppers, but he was inspired by them on some level and he invited them to participate. i think it was a beautiful show mean mugging grit faces and all.

  51. Tat

    September 27, 2013 at 6:00 pm

I don’t understand, what is this? And intro and then the models come out with his clothes. Clearly these are women of all different shapes, sizes, and race, and having them on stage at a fashion show is great, however, why are they not wearing his clothes then. I don’t understand the point.

    September 28, 2013 at 5:31 am

After seeing the video I am even more amazed and touched.
And for the clothes: sure, this is not a fancy collection, some pieces are not flattering but women dont need to be flattered, dont need to spiff up (doesnt mean that couldnt or shouldnt). And imagining one of these passing me by on the street dressed like this, I mean an “average” woman, I’d definitely turn my head and find it bold and uplifting and down-to-earth. Dollism isnt sexy, power and strength is!

Unfortunately, this is the first fashion show in a long time that’s not just bored and stale and blah. I wish there was more unconventional creativity on display. It’s so much more interesting when a point is being made.

  61. Vessel

    September 28, 2013 at 5:11 pm

Excuse my language, but about ‘effin time! Of course the ‘sheets’ would probably look fabulous on a lithe woman, but he took a chance. A very American trait. Which is why I love living in this country.

    • Wayde

      October 1, 2013 at 1:25 am

Keep in mind that the women wearing the “Sheets” during the presentation were moving a lot and it’s quite possible that they way they were worn wasn’t a correct representation of how the clothing would appear of women walking in the street. I do applaud him for dressing “normal” women for a change.
