You can always recognise French women (as opposed to American/Latino etc women) by their hair. Itswonderfully understated.

I noticed this during my first years in France. Coming from ‘hot-weather’ culture where the hair is always coiffed & the nails are always done (and i always felt like the scrawny neighborhood tomboy)..this was a refreshing change when i got to france.

The biggest example of this I used to demonstrate to people is the Oscars vs. the Cesar Awards. At the Oscars its almost normal to look like a siliconized barbie doll. Where the Cesars look way more like “real” people got dressed.

I love that bag! I’m a huge fringe accessories fan. Paired with those heels, the outfit has a boho-but-cool feel. Perfect!

This looks effortless b/c she made no effort! I like the purse, the shoes are chic, but the pants, hair and top are messy and meh. On the other hand, the photo is cool! The horizontal lines of the steps vs. the verticality of the figure and the columns in the background really work.

    hey sartorialist,
i am here because i’m absolutely keen to see whats going on in new york. there must be such a circus, thousands of fancy dressed people running around! id love to be there.
i must say i am disappointed of what i see here. maybe i’m too dumb to understand this. the understatement of french women, that A described, seems the only interesting thing about this picture. okay, maybe youre right, thats enough reason to upload it. its interesting, though the look itself seems not inspiring to me.
thank you for your subtle observations.

Is it because she’s French, blonde or just thin? She looks ultra hip in a way that I never have managed. How do they do it?

Not exactly how I would envision a French editor to look, but maybe it’s her day off? I still love to see professional business men & women in suits…far more impressive.

The steps are a great backdrop to this ‘relaxed’ look. It’s a bit of a ‘yawn’ look though. Is this supposed to be fashionable?

  30. Kaila

    September 12, 2011 at 10:41 pm

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS LOOK! I’m glad she’s still wearing the JBrand cargos! Love them! Her fringe bag is wonderful as well!!

Who is she? Editor of what French mag?!

  31. The Fancy Teacup

    September 12, 2011 at 11:00 pm

The French certainly know a thing or two about style! This capture is the epitome of their talent. The fringed whip-stitched saddle bag, the endless strapped leather heels, and casual attire all make such a chic combination.

a nice angle for a shot of someone on her phone — also liking how her hair looks a bit like the fringes of her bag which look a bit like the leather strips in the shoes. love the motif and the harmony.

    September 12, 2011 at 11:20 pm

She is not dressed a la mode, that would be too obvious.

  34. Nemee

When I saw this photo the first thing I loved was her black shirt top. I love simple clothing and the fact that she chose this to wear shows how confident she is in her style. She knows what works and doesn’t have to prove anything.

This looks like an easy look, but it’s not. The jeans and shoes are a bit too ‘fashion’ for me; but the bag, the very simple yet unique top, and bracelet reflect her individual style very nicely.
