He’s a nice looking bloke and all, but I’m not really sure what’s so special about this one. Can anyone enlighten me?

Nice composition of the photograph. He is wearing way too much black for me – looks like he is in mourning. Nice briefcase. Jacket sleeves are a little too short. Like the shock of hair tumbling down his forehead.

Very hobbit cool. Love how the cuff hits his wrist.

Respect to you for finding these amazing people in Sydney! I lived there for ten years… high fashion equalled fake tan and Eurotrash jewellery! More of your pics please!

Agree with HC: nice photo, but boring and dorky as to style.

racing green will always be a winner.
You should have given Melbourne more of a go! we rock winter.. but the money shots definitely won’t be on Chapel St.

I’ve enjoyed you Australian shots. I like that there seems to be a unique and recognizable attitude to the styles there, and the sky and water sure is blue!

Suddenly found new picture during my keeping fresh the blog all this night.

Hobbit, no. Current day Jedi knight, yes. Even without him in the photo, it would be interesting.

Nice composition here. Love all of the colors and lines in this shot.

Okay, this is a cool shot but why does it make me think of that little troll in the red hooded jacket running around Venice slashing throats in Don’t Look Now?

  22. Danielle

    May 1, 2009 at 12:28 pm

he looks like that actor, Jeremy Sisto. Nice shot.

If I encountered him on these shaded and creepy stairs, he might give me a wee bit of a fright. Then after a 2nd glance I’d know he’s not the grim reaper but an eerily stylish gent.

This is my all time favorite location of a photo on your site. This is brilliant. The muted colours of the brick and the steps and the texture of that wall and the little bits of green sprouting are phenomenal. Love it.

This photograph for me is about the textures of the stones and colors of the leaves.

I like the color of the jacket, and the composition of the photo, but other than that I don’t see much here. The clothing is quite ordinary.

He should undo his top shirt button unless he is about to put on a tie.

I like the pieces of the outfit, especially the dark pine parka. However, there really isn’t anything special about this outfit at all.

Beautiful man, beautiful outfit. If this photo had a soundtrack, it would have to be The Cocteau Twins.

This outfit and the man within could pass me by, without a second glance. It is everyday.

But you’ve captured the cool in him. The cool in Sydney and made me stop and look.

    I like that. x

What a Doll! No one does a navy spew and moss green quite like Sam. The very important brief case jam packed with all sorts of important papers.

I am starting to wonder if the Sydney-siders started to dress even more nicely as they are aware the sartorialist going around to shoot?

Why don’t you go to the shoot parts of Sydney as well, rather than hanging around the Rocks and the Harbour vicinity.Would be interested to see what you will find. :)

I am disappointed there were not many MELBOURNE shots as Melbournians are very fashionably chic!

  39. Virginia M Moncrieff

Kind of casual cool. Not too over done. Like it.

    Dear Sartoriaist,
It looks as though you are enjoying Sydney and its style.
However, I think you should go back to melbourne.
The photos you took aren’t doing anyone in Melbourne justice!
When I was last there, the fashion was brilliant. However, I did not go to chapel street.

    yours sincerely,

    great shot.
heaps of sydney, i can’t help but think melbourne is under represented.

When the Grim Reaper comes for me, I hope he looks like this!

    So cute!

He looks like Jeremy Sisto. He has a nice expression on his face. I agree, you should have given Melbourne more of a shot. Chapel St is not the best place to go to see attractive people. I recommend the CBD, Brunswick, Collins, and there are some interesting traditional clothes happening in the Western suburbs.

    May 2, 2009 at 2:35 am

agree with christine 9:57am.. why on earth chapel st??

anyway, i find this guy so cute! very much like the briefcase and the dark colours. i cant tell if his jeans are black or navy, but i like it.

i love that he’s not trying to be stylish or anything, but his look works.

You have seen the other side of urban Sydney, a little chic, a little bit enjoying the cold so you can dress up properly, the hidden charm that is usually blotted out by sunshine and surf duds. Thank you for showing my Sydney. Mandy.

Beautiful pic but it’s not exactly the kind of colors you associate with Australia – he kind of loks like a depressed (albeit trendy) Russian from Vladivostok to me…

I see men that look like this every day on the streets of New York, why is this interesting or special?

  57. Anonymous

    May 5, 2009 at 3:06 pm

    I think he looks fantastic!
It’s the slight-turn up of the trousers, the briefcase, the shirt buttoned to the top and the slight hint of the belt through the anorak that do it, rather than the anorak itself.

    May 5, 2009 at 4:27 pm

the forest green mixed with midnight blue is clean and modern. i like the way the pants are rolled casually mixed with the hood to give the look a more relaxed vibe even though you can go straight into the office…

It reminds me of Salford, Manchester, Morrissey and The Smiths on a normal rainy day in The Northern UK circa any time in the past 30 years or so. Very, very Lowry matchstick men and all that. It's nice to know that Sydney shares!
