Absolutely my favorite pic you have ever published!

Totally agree. While satisfying the sartorial element of this blog, this particular photo also brings drama and a compellingly indeterminate narrative. More than a lot of photos on this blog, this one leans strongly toward art, even while still being documentary.

Yes. Thats it exactly. I was wondering what made her look so vulnerable, and yet right, in the rain. Its her all white in contrast. Lovely moody photo.

Powerful juxtaposition of the chaos in the dark and stormy background and the firmly planted, unfazed woman in white in front. She’s seems to have a secret, like she’s somehow responsible for the mess behind her. Love it!

I never liked Paris on rainy grey days because the dampness just gets in your bones. But the only thing that made those days tolerable were sudden images, like this. Totally a surprise jolt a beauty in the grey, dark rain. The hair, legs, socks and shoes just make it all so lovely!

    Thank you, again for inspiration!

Did it take much persuading to get her to stand in the rain?

Prevalent as it is, I still hate the shape of that shirt. Where’s the female body underneath it?! Not that I believe in dressing for sexuality, but that is an absolute potato sack.

I’m not going to lie….when I first discovered The Sartorialist (many many moons ago), I felt that it transcended the ideology of “sartorialism” from it’s classical interpretation, and featured what I genuinely believed to be some fabulous, bordering on inspirational individuals, whom I could look upon with admiration, respect, lust and often envy…not to mention a wry smile, as a lover of beautiful people and beautiful things – “sartorialism” for the new age, as it were.

In essence the site, for me, became a platform or benchmark in a sense, which also appeared to be the case amongst other “street style” bloggers (to be as basic as that), that followed suit (pardon the pun).

However, in recent months, dare I say year(s)…I’ve become a little disillusioned with the content and the “sartorialism” of those shots I was viewing – the style of the photographs themselves and the repetitive nature of the clothing, the individuals (or, non-individuals as it were), the cities, and the overall content of the site. Perhaps, I thought, time had stood still…or perhaps the trappings of new found fame / wealth, and the popularity of the site, the man, the “sartorialist”, had skewed the original vision…OR, perhaps, I was simply becoming immune to much much more than what I was viewing on this one singular site, and many newer sites like it, as the spread of the social media platforms took over our cultures in every way imaginable? Who knows!?

What I do know however, is that what I haven’t mentioned thus far is one simple, yet hugely important and significant word….ART. And forgetting everything written in the last couple of paragraphs, this photograph is ART! It transcends every other photograph that has ever been published on this site, and any other street style blog for that matter, and for that Mr Schuman, I applaud you.

Who am I? Who cares? Does it matter? Maybe, maybe not, but this picture says something very powerful. I don’t yet quite know what it says, but it’s much much more than anything as morally or ethically devoid as the stated definition of “sartorialism”, and for that reason, I think I’ve fallen in love with this site all over again.

    Yours respectfully,

    Stephen Wilson
