The hair is retro and current, the dress is marvelous, although she may have done a bit better for herself than those anti-climactic flip-flops!

Hey! Those flip flops are comfortable. On the streets of New York, at this time of year, comfort trumps everything. Plus, she just looks so good… so normal… so ” I am me and I dress for me and I look great so deal with it.” I love her.

        August 8, 2012 at 12:48 pm

peter and arnoldo, you try walking around new york all day in heels, and then get back to me about “anticlimactic” flip flops.

preach! I love the retro vibe of this modern woman (read- comfortable in her own skin to rock flip flops in broad daylight-shock horror). If not for the shoes I would have thought this pic was straight from 1960s America. The flip flops give it a modern edge; I’m sure when she reached her destination she would have changed the shoes. It’s practical chic!

This is a 1940′s Betty Boop hairdo done with braids. Very modern and original.

      • Pinky

        August 8, 2012 at 10:24 pm

I love her, too. She is real and comfortable in her skin. No artifice, no studied “look at me because I have style” imperative, no obviousness. Good one. Proving, once again, that one can look terrific without force.

      August 8, 2012 at 10:29 am

Totally agree Peter. Shoes can make or break and outfit.

      • Heels with a flowered dress are for church.

        August 8, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Personally I think the shoes make the outfit. If she had heels on, she would be wearing a Sunday at Church outfit. As is, she has a relaxed, pretty summer vibe to it. She is right, and you are wrong. And I have never heard of anyone getting tetanus walking around the city in flip flops. Are you one of those people that brings sanitary wipes with you? I had a friend like that. poor guy. His parents scared him as a child and now he is afraid of ticks, germs, and everything else.

    • Peter

      August 8, 2012 at 11:51 am

Totally agree. Flip flops should only be worn on the beach and in the shower. Nothing says tetanus shot like flip flops in the city!

I loved the hair the dress but the flipflops were a disappointment. My pictures only come up in series so was looking forward to the shoes.

Agreed! Shoes can make an an outfit pop. Everything from the ankle up is flawless.

Sorry, but heels or even girly flats would look silly. Unless she is on set to film a movie set in the early sixties, wearing a vintage dress from that era together with “matching” shoes would be freaky, not good. I am pretty sure that you should do tennies, maybe combat boots, or flip flops or some other contrasting footwear to make sure you don’t look like you are doing a costume. I think her choice is right on the money. Showing your feet is sexy. Kind of like going barefoot. The more undone something looks, the better. Otherwise she would look like a proper little lady and that would be foolish.

Well said! (Though “freaky” and “foolish” may be a bit harsh.)

      • Monsieur Marcel

        August 9, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Well said indeed (though a bit strident), still, there’s a right choice of footwear for every dress. In this case, it appears as flipflops by default.
Also, within the context of this b/w photo flipflops are anachronistic.

    • Christina

      August 16, 2012 at 10:24 am

I’m big into fashion and not so much into flip-flops, but I must say that I actually like the flip-flops as they relate to the whole outfit.. comfortable or not. For me, it brings the whole look out of New York City and into Havana and makes it all the more idyllic and alluring!

        August 8, 2012 at 11:53 am

That’s interesting. She’s wearing a vintage dress, so it is a bit retro, no?

        • Steve

          August 8, 2012 at 8:25 pm

Indeed she is! And a very lovely vintage dress at that. I guess I should have written that everything that looks good is beginning to be called either retro or vintage.

      • Martine

        August 8, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Interesting observation. Perhaps you simply like things with a retro vibe? Or perhaps there is a real retro look in todays styles in general. I certainly see a lot of the mid seventies, early sixties, and even the nineties cropping up. Her hair alone would make this look retro even without the vintage dress. Do you notice things that you don’t feel look good are NOT retro to other peoples eyes? Or do you just mean that many things are labeled retro ad hoc?

I don’t know about that… you have been known to use prints to do pysch-ops for your golf game! But I really do like the shoes here… they seem perfectly summery and unpretentious, and they create a gentle tension with her dress and hair.

  19. Derek

classic beauty, i love it! in NY (for comfort’s sake) women often carry their heels, while wearing comfy shoes (e.g. flipflopsor flats) to their destination. not to say that’s what your subject did, but as a female NYer i get it!

      August 8, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Actually, I love it. Its a lot like wearing tennies with a dress, but has the added allure of seeming to be barefoot. Its a good strong way to say that the dress isn’t just for looking “dressed up”. If you see my point. Its tames down the frilliness of the outfit and gives it edge. If she did wear heels, or flats with this it would be very much like a period costume.

  27. ttea

    August 8, 2012 at 10:18 am

This really seems like this could have been taken in the 50′s. The hairstyle and the dress and then the fact that it’s in black and white, make this photo very vintage feeling. The composition of this photo also makes it seem like a classic photo.

Have you considered doing anonymous posts and letting the readers work out the country, city and street. That would be more fun for us and readers could argue it out based on style.

Megan, what an excellent suggestion. Mr. Schuman’s readers seem to have a “natural” affinity for anything that is NYC/Brooklyn and dis the same looks if those looks occur somewhere else. If fashion and style are truly universal and inherent in the individual, let the games begin. No geography–just great shots. Let’s see if we’re all so fashionable as we think we are.

I think the flip-flops are what makes this outfit stand out. Every other person would have worn heels with it dressing it up too much.
A shame that the photograph is not in colour, though-I would have loved to see the colour of the dress, bag and flip-flops.

Really love the black & white photo but am curious to see what the color of the dress and accessories are. I have worn a dress with flip-flops many times and it’s one of my staple outfits during the Summer. I have a lot of flip-flops being a lifeguard and it’s always fun to dress them up and wear them all day long!

She is amazingly bold and self-concious!
I wonder whether she is not of a new generation of Black women braced to revisit their hairstyle in a very bold fashion, and thus is slowly departing from the one mostly seen in Europe (!) which – for a rationale that still escapes me – prefer to ape by doning … wigs!
I hope this new generation would manage to stick to its new sense of style!
NB: You really have an extraordinary keen eye for style, Scott!

I might be wrong, but I imagine that none of those who were disappointed by the flip-flops were from DC, where “dignified” dresses with pretty flip-flops has been the norm for years. Several years ago, my Mom came to DC to visit me and said she was surprised to look around on the street and see that all the ladies were doing it; she thought it was just my sense of style when I came home to visit. I was surprised to find out from her that women weren’t doing it everywhere. Sometime later, when the Real Housewives of DC premiered, one reviewer wrote that the show’s lack of flip-flops was evidence that the women featured didn’t represent “real” DC housewives.

This is my dear pal, Jatovia! How wonderful to see her on my favorite photographer’s site! Kudos! You have captured an epic and stunning woman. As well as a staunch community activist and fellow photographer. It was also her birthday! I’m sure she told you.
I would like to also add, she is even more thrilling in person! :)

A few week ago i saw people gawk, and fawn over a woman with sneakers and a very pretty and fancy outfit, and everybody loved it haha, but she wear’s a very laid back flip flop that actually completes the outfit and looks very classic, and appropriate for NY and the heat and “it ruins” the look? Nope she is perfection.

If you knew about Brooklyn, you would know there’s a huge African and Island influence, hence the sandals. Some of the comments on this page are ridiculous. Every time a person of color is featured on here, certain people always have something negative to say about their outfit like it’s not quite “correct.” Yet an Italian can wear some sneakers or sandals with a suit and it’s “edgy.” I’ve seen women with dresses on and Converse All Star shoes and nobody has a thing to say. Her style was perfect.

Be it retro or not, with or without the sandals this girl is simply gorgeous. I like the timeless vibe of this shot and I also like that she looks at ease in what she is wearing, she is natural and that’s what’s making her so stylish in my opinion.
I’ll just add that my point of view must be biaised because this kind of outfit with these type of sandals is not unusual to me. Having lived for years in Africa, I could see women wear sandals with such a dress because heels there are not the best friends of women, but be it in Africa or Brooklyn I don’t care, for me this combo just work everywhere, the important thing is that you feel good in what you are wearing and this girl just does !

I was like beautiful when I saw the thumbnail. I quickly opened the image, and I was just loving the black and white feel of the image, but alas the flip flops stole the show. Black peep toe pumps would have completed this outfit quite well.
