A bloody amputation of a good tweed jacket. No finishing of any sort on the armholes. Awful!

It must be an ex-boyfriend's coat, not her Dad's.

Nicely innovative, and I think a finished edge would actually make it look stupid in this case.

She's finishing it off with the excellent shoes instead :-)

I think the look is charming w/o the jacket. The jacket is an interesting idea, but imho, doesn't really complement the rest of the look.

Like the stripes with the check, but the cut-off jacket just looks way too contrived

Great photograph; the red bag, the stone building, how her headband brings out the colour of the stripes in her shirt, her red cheeks…she looks like she's wishing she hadn't cut off those sleeves. I wonder who's she's calling and where she's going to go…

This is street style: innovative and recycling at once.
Even the mix of patterns, colors and textures work seamlessly.
    A brilliant sartorialist!

The armholes are a nice distraction to the clashing plaid/stripe combination that does not particularly work in this case. Love the accessories, though.

No way did you just come by this one! I don't believe it. She's your sister, right? Clearly the coat is awesome but I also love her play on stripes. Her rings look interesting, too. Another A+, sir.

At last I have your book – birthday request from my daughter. Sadly missed your signing in London. As a 1960s 'dolly bird' I am sad that London street style is so poorly reflected in your pictures. I see many stylish people of all ages and both sexes at London vintage fashion fairs.Their clothes are at least one year ahead of catwalks – because designers and stylists visit us. Without doubt the most stylish people you photograph are in Milan but I am also very happy to confirm that the most beautiful live in Dublin.

It all looks great – except the jacket. I agree with CW – it looks "amputated". Terrible.

  41. Stella

    October 13, 2009 at 6:40 pm

The shoes! What are they? I must have them.

I also adore the plaid upon stripe and the contrast of the perfectly tailored to the improvised headband and frayed jacket. But I'm torn on the cut sleeves. It could be precious, and clever. But part of me thinks it looks like a massacre to something handsome and should be passed down.

  42. MeganRose

    October 13, 2009 at 6:50 pm

I appreciate her use of patterns, textures, creativity and colors…however I do not care for the jacket at all. I think the arm holes look awful…

  48. Forest City Fashionista

    October 13, 2009 at 7:20 pm

She's adorable, and those are killer shoes, but the jacket just looks like it was dropped on her shoulders from above–it's too heavy and dull for the rest of her outfit

  59. Anonymous

    October 13, 2009 at 8:41 pm

i can only imagine how bad the jacket would look with her arms sticking through it. innovation for innovations sake isn't innovation.

  60. beths

    October 13, 2009 at 8:45 pm

In theory yes, but in practice no. Everything works except for the botched jacket-vest execution. It needs to be altered or tailored or finished more thoughtfully before it can work. Nip the waist?

  61. Anonymous

    October 13, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Not so crazy for the jacket, I don't know if it looks strange to me because her arm isn't going through it, or because it looks so brutally ripped off…but I NEED those shoes!

  64. Kirsten

    October 13, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Definitely gets points for using his tie as a headband – daddy's little girl! And a good smile can make almost any crime forgivable. Maybe the sleeves had terrible stains or holes… alright, that's a reach, but cute shot at least.

  66. Erin

    October 13, 2009 at 10:46 pm

My favorite part by far is the stripes and plaid. And I think the red bag goes perfectly with them. As for the jacket…I wouldn't do it myself, and the outfit looks just as well or better without I think, but she pulls it off. Seems like it's her look. But an overall thumbs-up, she looks like a fun gal.

She is pretty, really pretty with an amazing smile, I like the combination of checked trousers and striped top, the shoes, hmm, a bit worn out for my taste, sorry.. But the jacket, I do not get that at all.. Nothing wrong with the idea of cutting your dad's old jacket, but it doesn't work, seriously. Otherwise I like the picture though.

She is happy and natural and casual in a funky way -, lovely smile and i like the green hairband. Who cares if the armholes are not finished off re previous comment way back., thats not what she is trying to say. Checks/stripes/tweed/ funny little court shoes/ green head band/ great smile – nice person – coooool and unpretentious unlike so many style/fashion victims. You don't see girls like this in New York, Milan, Paris – only London and Dublin. x

Love seeing the cross-section of the jacket in the cut-off arm holes. The suit/sport coat is the modern man's armor, and you can see why in this thick, stiff, warm ex-coat.

She's precious. I Like almost ALL of her outfit, but why,oh,why would you cut the sleeves off that jacket? To make a vest? I'd be interested in seeing it on her – I just can't imagine it looking good.
Hopefully, she spent a lot of time inside without her "altered" jacket!

Cute girl – great shot – great blog!

I think it must be an Irish thing to mutilate perfectly nice garments! I've done the same thing on a number of occasions to varying degrees of success. I'd love to see what it looks like when she's wearing it. Otherwise the rest of her is perfect. She's spirited in a very Irish way. I love it.

So glad that you've picked up on the pale and interesting here. Such a refreshing contrast to the fake-tanned, hair-straightened, wannabe Paris Hilton's that walk the streets of Ireland.

And such an honor to meet you, What??!

She could pull this off if it weren't for the red bag. I think the candy colours in her headband and bag make the outfit look cheap and crafty instead of dramatic.

Good idea on her part though, nice to see some real creativity in clothing.

Oh I love it. I'm a bit surprised to see all the fussing about a "nice" jacket. That jacket very well may have been a vintage piece that ended up with a huge hole in the arm, from a tear or moths or what have you. I see this and I see someone who has perhaps repurposed something to make it more usable for her. Even if it is not my style (I would be more likely to wear it whole), I take my hat off for the innovation and creativity. I love it all the more that it is raw and 'amputated' and brash, the concept isn't one that would lend itself well to delicate treatment.

I wanted to love the coat, but after checking it out like 10 times, it's still a "No". I wonder if the amputated look would be less of an issue for me if I did not happen to come across this very picture right after watching "The Lodger", a thriller movie by Alfred Hitchcock… Nevertheless, love everything else.

Not particularly thrilled about the sportcoat, unless it had some big stain on the sleeve & she was salvaging it. I am very interested in the red bag, though. http://www.nickiefrye.etsy.com

cute to see how a little real originality, which could not have been purchased in any vintage shop, goes beyond the comfort level of many.
& to all those concerned with ruining a jacket, maybe she gave new life to an otherwise unwearable jacket with a torn or moth eaten sleave.

her outfit has a real flapper look to it. the little head band, the short heels and she's doing something "different" with her look.

    well done.
