What a beautiful, simple dress on an equally beautiful model. There is something about no-frills white that is always appealing. (Actually, any color – without competing colors or hues, works.)

If NY is facing the same heat wave as much of the rest of the USA, then she chose well to wear all white on Crosby Street!

Missed your B&W pics. That’s a gorgeous dress and the silver accessories just compliments the plainness of the dress perfectly. Also the safety pin adds a really nice detail and a touch of personality.

Beautiful black and white–captures a fortuitous symmetry and casts a powerful appeal on the subject. I love her jewelry.

Does she have something wrapped around her neck and secured with a big safety pin?? Not sure about that. I love her jewellery, though.

I have to admit that I do not really like the neck part of the dress, but I like the simplicity of the whole look, it fits the composition. This is a truly beautiful picture, and again the black and white is perfect for this picture.

That’s such a simple and confy dress, and plus it’s white, a color highly used in summer. I don’t like the all-white look, it looks like the candyman or whatever.. But this is ok, although I don’t understand why Scott picked this look.

Glad you posted this in B&W; it seems to give the picture more deepth.
Loving her bangles & shades; but not the dress so much, it just looks like an ill fitting sack.

I really, really like this look with the white cotton , the jewelry, ballet flats. But there’s something about it thatt’s maybe a little too covered up and it makes it look religious. Maybe sandals would make a difference, loose hair, even shorter sleeves?

Photo is great. Accessories are great. Dress is, well, in dire need of ironing and are those Dr. Scholl’s to go flats? My mother would scold me for leaving the house in that dress.

so I have this dress, or a very similar version of it. I have owned it for years, and I wear it every summer. Several summers ago, I was in Provincetown, MA. A man stopped me and said, “if I were a woman, I’d wear that dress all the time.” Which was just about the best compliment ever.

Great summer look, minus the neck piece.

  41. Martine

I love the linen texture of the dress, and I absolutely love high necklines. They are really quite an established trend at this point, and a good one. Everything looks twice as good buttoned to the very top. The neck pin just takes that up a notch, and I thank the Sartorialist for the great idea. I can’t wait to try this. It makes it look like a mandarin collar but better! Lovely all around, and you can’t beat black and white for sophistication. This blog is always inspiring and giving ideas. With the never anding heat wave I REALLY need that. Keep the wonderful work coming!

  42. Martine

    August 4, 2011 at 5:01 pm

BTW..Linen is supposed to be wrinkled like that. Its been worn so for centuries. Suits, coats, shirts.. everything. Obviously some people don’t know that, so I thought Id explain.

  55. Helen

    August 7, 2011 at 9:07 pm

WOW. She’s so sexy without any skin showing, hair scraped back, eyes hidden…. its all about what’s underneath the plain linen. This kind of understated, minimalist style highlights the skin, the face, the beauty of the wearer. By the way, this look would be nothing without the chunky jewellery catching the light.

You can buy a dress like this from an NY designer called Pip-Squeak Chapeau. She does stunningly beautiful, simple, linen womenswear. This link shows the dress in black, but they used to stock it in white and I’m sure you could request it.

I have been making and wearing these dresses for over twenty years. Maybe thirty years. I even design the hatpins I wear through the collars to stand it up. Lovely picture but it should be me wearing it. I knew it would happen eventually….

Where can I get a dress like that? She is gorgeous!
I recently came back from Paris and saw many women who dressed simply, but added a little something special to their outfit and made it so interesting!
I am addicted to your art and look forward to it everyday!
    Love from Canada!!
