On the Street….Crapdozis, Moscow

This is one of the shots I did for the Harper’s Bazaar Russia Best Dressed List. She was one of my favorite young ladies I met while in Moscow. She has great natural style, a great wardrobe and was up for whatever kind of shot I wanted to do – so I knew she would be the perfect young woman for this location.
While I was riding in the car with Mira (I posted several photos of her on November 5th) I noticed this one particular kind of hot dog stand that I kept seeing around the city. I asked her, “what does Crapdozis mean in Russian?”
She looked at me very strangely, so I pointed at the hot dog stand and explained that, to me, the sign said Crapdozis. She laughed and said in Russian it meant something like Starfish or Star-something.

Then she said, “What is a Crapdozi?”

“Well,” I said “Crapdozi is like….well…kinda…it might mean something like….well….big poop”

She could not stop laughing. It became the running joke during my time in Moscow.

When we were on one of the last shots for the day I decided we had to get Crapdozis in the story, luckily there was one only a few blocks away. We ran down there quickly because we were losing light fast.

I wanted her to stand close to the table that had Crapdozis written down the side. Unfortunately, there was a guy already standing there finishing his meal. They asked him in Russian if we could join him for a minute while we got the shot.

I still have no idea who that guy in the far background is, but they all seemed to have a good laugh while we did the shots.

And that, my friends, is the rest of the story.

The stand actually reads “Stardogs”. And that young woman looks fabulous.

It is a wonderful shot, but it pales in comparison to the story.

Crapdozi is my new favorite expletive!

She’s looking at her crapdozi contemplating what you said and deciding never again to eat starfish hotdogs.

I quite love this shot. When I first saw it I wasn’t sure if it was one of your on-the-streets or editorial. It’s a bit more polished than your others but fits right in.

She’s beautiful and her ensemble (which you’ve indicated is from her closet) is very nice, I especially dig the boots. I guess Russian’s aren’t weird about mixing orange and black like American’s are.

Oh yes, I can totally see and agree why she’s on the best dressed list….

“Dude, I had a dozen beers and then hit Taco Bell on the way home. This morning was a Crapdozi!”

How elegant is that red jacket. Structured, but toughened up with those boots. The men are great too, love that splash of purple… definetly a brave move!

I don’t know if you have more time now than usual but I am really enjoying your additional commentary. It is more like when you first started the site. Your opinions, thoughts, and sidenotes are as valuable and interesting, if not more so, as your images. Your particular take is very refreshing and is what makes your blog so interesting. Please continue if at all possible.

Love the color of the other guy’s scarf, too!

That is the kind of hip and easy grace that every girl wishes she had or could look leaning against a ‘crapdozi’ stand.

I couldn’t find the pictures of her on Nov. 5th though… I would like to see more.

I am enthralled by this photograph. It’s so normal yet captivating by the way she stands while regularly talking to two men. Plus, her boots definitely grab my attention. :]
