that septum ring, a tiny little detail, makes it all something completely different! :)

A little 90′s, but yes, I agree. This suits her like she was born to it!

The jeans are great. And jeans are only as great as the girl in them. So the girl is great.

very french and very stunning. Im sure many will disagree but i think the cigarette looks pretty cool.

French ? Wearing stripes doesn’t make your style french. This is far from being “very french”, au contraire. I’d say this is someone from London.

      Cheers from Paris

Its not the stripes, its the cigarette.

This photo looks like it is from another decade. The crop top, nose ring, high waisted jeans, even the cigarette. It’s too dated for me.

    • Emilia Rachael

      September 25, 2014 at 12:24 pm

But that’s surely the point of the picture – to show her individuality and daring to pull off a look that’s “dated”. Just my opinion :)

    • Gabywiz

      September 25, 2014 at 1:21 pm

Agree – even the cigarette is a relic from the past. Or it should be – message to French girls -abandonner les cigarettes et l’odeur!!

As someone who has lived through mom jeans, piercings, and crop tops their first time around, I’m not loving their resurgence.

However I’m sure that’s what my parents were saying about my choices when I was a 90s teen obsessed with 60s & 70s fashion.

I will say she’s very pretty. Only a gorgeous woman can pull these clothes off.

With the exception of a piercing or two, this seems to be a pretty re-hashed look from the 80′s, although I’m quite sure that she isn’t old enough to know this.

    • une chatte grise

      September 25, 2014 at 1:38 pm

I’m quite sure she knows exactly what this look is and has embraced it. The fact that she’s young simply means that she didn’t wear this stuff the first time around, so she can now play with it in what is, for her, all its retro fabulousness. (And she looks great in it.)

    September 25, 2014 at 12:22 pm

Wow. such a great shot. I think you have to be extremely daring to pull off a septum piercing and I usually don’t like them but this girl seriously rocks it. She’s beautiful and individual. You can tell from her piercing, hair, clothes, posture, everything. I’d love to know her story.

  22. Erica

    September 25, 2014 at 1:30 pm

It looks like a vintage pic from the 90′s. Love it!

  23. Jice

    September 25, 2014 at 1:35 pm

I wonder if this girl is aware of her style predecessor, Jean Serberg, in the ’50s film, Breathless, with Jean-Paul Belmondo. Similar hair, striped t shirt and jeans but this girl has an edgier rattier look.

“International Herald Tribune! International Herald Tribune!”

  26. JV

    September 25, 2014 at 2:53 pm

She pulls it off. The nose ring is a nice updated touch on a straight-up 80s look. It’s not even a take on an 80s look, it’s pretty much a faithful reproduction. Not sure how I feel about that part, but she looks good, so I guess it’s OK by me.

I am repeating what others say; High rise jeans where the waist is on the waist of the human are the way jeans were worn in the 1950′s, 1960′s, 1970′s( except for a teeny minute of hip huggers) 1980′s, 1990′s . Only in the early 2000′s someone decided we needed to wear our pants gown our backside, and now we are back to wearing normal jeans. Those are classic/normal.

To the comments about her looking dated. Wouldn’t most current fashions be somewhat derivative of another?

    • Molly

      September 25, 2014 at 7:51 pm

I guess you’re right…but this look is dated, not derivative. For me, a derivative look is one where I am often comforted or fascinated by the way that current fashion has borrowed from that of another time. The recent photo of a woman in a green dress is a great example. I loved the look, it reminded me of 1950s dresses, but the fabric was modern and the model did not in any way look like she was “copying” a look. This photo, by contrast, is a straight-up copy of an 80s Madonna look with the sole addition of a nose ring. For me it is not interesting.

Interesting the back-and-forth re: retro vs. dated.

If a look is from too recent an era, it’s dated. If it’s a couple of decades old or more, it’s more retro.

Fashion always recycles and comes back, and it’s how you rock that look that makes it cool.

I think she looks great. It is a very direct reference to the Papa Don’t Preach-Madonna look as mentioned before – and that era is long enough ago that this works, now.

As for the cigarette – who cares? I’m relieved not to have to read anti-tattoo comments.

I’m finding I care less and less about “dated” anyway….whether this is, or isn’t. I’m thrilled to see a lot of these “dated” looks. It means style is finally individualized, relaxed, personal, and about the wearer and not about the most recent cut off the line.
