On the Scene….Mr. Marzotto, Paris

This top shot is all about the fan as a men’s accessory (not just for Karl anymore!).

In the shot below, look at Mr. Marzotto’s reflection in the mirror.  It’s like suit porn.   I think a half-inch (minimum) of shirt collar showing over the jacket is so refined.  Super subtle touches like that separate the men from the boys.

I really love the collar detail as well. You are so right; how one wears their suit seperates the men from the boys.

Scott, you have to come visit Copenhagen sometime!

I love your ‘suit porn’ comment! As you say, it’s details like this that demonstrate the care and attention some people take, and it’s a beautiful thing to see and celebrate.

Suit Porn Indeed. He’s very sharp, but I must disagree about the fan. When I picture a dashing, masculine type, I don’t picture a fan… of course, nothing is ever written in stone.

Provided that Mr. Marzotto is probably one of the most elegant individuals on the planet, it looks like its jacket is the wrong size. I do prefer more fitted jackets…

This is making me rethink my aversion to double breasted suits! Sorry, but a man with a fan is something I can’t get behind. Only Karl can get away with that.

I agree with the comment that the suit jacket lo0ks too big. Not sure I like the double breasted look on him. It might look good buttoned, but too much extra material when the jacket is open.

    October 27, 2011 at 5:26 pm

Its a lovely suit and the cut is impeccable. The collar is one indication. Also, notice how the shoulders are cut so that the jacket drapes nicely over his body’s shoulders; there is a clean drop (pic 1) and subtle dimpling (pic 2).
But as a double breasted, it must be worn closed. Either his outer button has slipped or he’s playing with a faux closed look that just doesn’t work. I certainly hope its the former!

PS: the unbuttoned double breasted jacket as sported for years by David Letterman used to drive me NUTS!

Double-breasted suits remind me the 30′s and 40′s film classes I took in college. Humphrey Bogart totally rocked the double-breasted–always buttoned.

  38. Kristijonas

    October 27, 2011 at 9:30 pm

I completely agree with some of the above comments – true that the suit is probably extremely expensive, and that the collar showing is an indication of attention to detail – but, what’s with all that extra material? The way he’s shot in these pictures makes the man look sharp, but I have a feeling that a straight-up shot of him would expose an excessive, double-breasted jacket two sizes too large. He also needs to get his sleeves taken in – his shirt cuffs seem to have been engulfed by the tragedy that is the poorly-fitted jacket.

I love the current, modern suit cuts, such as in the Ralph Lauren Black Label – I’ve got one myself and it looks as if it was made for me. Classic throw-backs such as the double-breasted suit are excellent – but please keep them buttoned, man.

And who ever called this man “probably one of the most elegant individuals on the planet”… what are you talking about? Do you even know this guy?

  43. Bernadette

    October 28, 2011 at 12:40 am

Dear Kristijonas, Its a double breasted suit with only the UNDER (ie inside) button done up and as for the sleeves, he has his hands in his trouser pockets. Trust me, this is a great suit, he knows how to wear it and he is well know for his fabulous style. Bernadette

  44. Nonplussed

    October 28, 2011 at 3:52 am

Very good point. No use spending time/money on a suit if you don’t know which collar/shirt style suits you best, they do differ and one style definitely does not fit all.

Too much material for me. Double-breasted makes him look short. Collar stretches out his neck, kind of like wearing a neck brace. Shark fin lapels distract from the natural line of the shoulders. Not for me but if it makes him feel like a million dollars, that is all that matters.

  52. R

    October 28, 2011 at 10:39 am

The suit is not to big, trust me. This guys clothes are all impeccably tailored, and I bet that had he had a bit more time, he would have buttoned up and posed. You can see examples of how well his suits fit here:

    He looks good, but;

The upper Suit jacket sleeves are too voluminous.

In general the suit jacket is too loose fitting.

It looks a size too big, and while he looks great, I do not think it is “Suit Porn”

I think it is close to Suit Porn

Another male Italian public figure showing how less is more. If you ever get the chance to watch their news on RAI, watch how “i politici” dress for work. Navys and grays, period. I’m all for splashes of color, but you will never regret a two-color suiting ensemble, particularly in uncertain or unfamiliar situations.

  56. Ivo

    October 28, 2011 at 3:55 pm

Way too characterless in terms of dull colour palette, and almost devoid of texture accent/contrasts; not to mention he looks a bit too self-aware to be genuinely elegant. Otherwise sexy grin.

  57. Hunter Goss

    October 28, 2011 at 4:40 pm

Matteo Marzotto seems to always be well turned out. These photos are no exception.

As to the fit of his suit, such things are a matter of personal taste and style, especially when the suit is made for that specific man.

And as to the fan? Well, the fan has a long tradition in martial arts society as an accessory for men that is both decorative and deadly. It’s considered a gentleman’s weapon – - short range, and quite effective in the hands of someone trained to use it.

I don’t think the collar is flattering at all. It’s too high and swallows his neck. It makes him look like he has no neck. A shorter/lower collar would be in better proportion for him. I know, cuz I have a short neck & have the same problem.

It so great how is smiles enhances the perfection of his suit and handsomeness. Amazing what a a smile can do. Often times many people are shot with a very serious look, but this is so natural and refreshing because he looks like he is not full of himself but enjoying the moment. Great shot Scott!

Saying that a man should not use a fan, except if he is Karl Lagerfeld, is like saying that a woman should noy use taylored pants and flat oxfords except if she is, say, Katherine Hepburn. As Hunter Goss has said, fans have been used by men in Japan for centuries; today in Spain, in the hot summer days, some fashionable men use fans, smaller than those used by women. At 35 or 38 ÂșC, getting a light breeze at will seem rather smart to me and perfectly manly

Unless he’s starting a new trend, double breasted suits look neater when buttoned. I don’t have an aversion to straight men using fans, but he should’ve chosen a less feminine one.

Ok first of all his suit is custom, and secondly it only looks large because it is unbuttoned because italy is hotter than hell at that time of year, so therefore fan and unbuttoned, when the coat is buttoned it will come in at least 4 or 5 inches (standard overlap) and itll look perfect, trust me.
