As much as I love my Aldens, my Church’s and my Tod’s, I have to admit, I love these Nike AF1 just as much.

Like a great cordovan wing tip, these Nikes only get better looking with age. I feel sad it’s almost time to pack them away until next October.

I’m not a sneaker guy so these may be AF1 but also they could be Nike Air Royals Premium Mids. I’ve heard that I could potentially have these remade (maybe same leather as AF1?) at the Nike shop down on Mercer Street, can anyone confirm that?

Ooooh, I love these! Such a raw, earthy, manly appeal to them… I’ve been looking everywhere and can’t seem to find these in this more “natural” color – would you perhaps know where I could find them? I’m assuming they may have been discontinued, but would love to snatch a pair for the Mr. before they go extinct. Love your blog by the way :-)

My husband owns a pair of Allen Edmonds Chukka boots in Oxblood. He has owned these shoes for twenty years and wears them nearly every day, turning away a bevy of designer shoes in his closet. I took the Chukka boots to our cobbler for some TLC a few years ago, and the tailor put his hands on them and looked at me with soulful eyes and said “They just don’t make them this way anymore”. Your Nike’s remind me of the shoes my husband loves so much. Fantastic closeup shot Scott. You are my inspiration!

Gotta love a pair of good sneakers. But it is true, there are times when they’re the best thing to use, while other times not. I personally have a love for Adidas’ Adirise Mid 2.0. Something sleek yet casual about them. – Australian Street Fashion & Street Style

These are NOT your standard Air Force 1′s, part of me wonders if they really are at all. Some special edition he’s keeping tight lipped about (who wouldn’t? That brown leather, mmmm)
I’ll stick to my dunks though, the standard AF1′s are a little too 2001 Nelly (he’s a rapper, guys).

These will do just fine. Not AF1′s (or standard), but like I said, neither are the ones above. They’re kicks on fire, so plan on fending off a few hypebeasts for your pair.

  55. John Hunter

    March 26, 2013 at 10:34 am

Nice! Yes, you CAN go to 21 Mercer and customize your own pair of AF1′s… I believe it’s termed “Bespoke AF1″, where the process is literally made-to-order. A pretty penny for them, yes, but they’re also a 1/1 pair.

  56. Colleen

    March 26, 2013 at 11:09 am

As a Nike employee, those look like Air Royals (the AF1s are a little bulkier), but I could be wrong if they’re an older model. Check the style code on the tongue if you want to be double sure. It’ll be a six-digit style code and then a dash and a three-digit color code. Like 123456-789.

As for getting them remade, I don’t know about the special perks about the Mercier street store, but I know that both of those models are on Nike ID, so you can pick your own colors/materials/etc and have them made to order. Mercier might have a station that you can do that in-store, rather than online?

Anyway, I’m with you on the leather high-tops. I’ve got six or seven different white pairs sitting under my desk now. Good thing I get a discount otherwise I’d be out of house and home.

    Good luck!

Once in a while, high top trainers are worn to give your casual wear some attitude. These shoes look lived in so much that they seem to have developed a character of their own. Remaking them might be a tad pricey but in the end, I believe they’ll be worth every penny spent on them.

Another Nike employee here. It doesn’t look like the Air Flytop is currently available through the Nike ID studio ( However, styles change/switch in and out as some retro models are reintroduced and new models also become available, (hello Free Run 5!) It’s possible that this particular model may resurface at some point. There’s hope!

On a related note, I certainly recommend taking a look at the Air Force 1s rolling out all this year, as we’re celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the AF1. Nike likes to collaborate with other fascinating athletes and designers to create special limited editions so keep your eyes peeled for some really unique styles.

Lastly, the Nike Dunk has a similar aesthetic to the AF1, though it doesn’t have the ankle strap. It’s a skateboarding shoe, so if you ever have the chance to try a pair on, expect them to be a little lighter, cushier, yet slightly more bulky than your lovely old Nikes.

p.s. I was stoked to see some of your On the Street subjects wearing Flyknits earlier this year!

  70. J

    March 27, 2013 at 9:05 am

Not AF1, these are fly tops as mentioned but an important note in regard to footwear is proportion. This model is more akin to early Jordan’s and has a retro fit. Works well with slimmer proportions and small physiques. The AF1 is a very substantial sneaker and always looks better (in my opinion) on bigger guys or with an oversized silhouette. Either way not a big fan of Nike but AF1′s are classics.

    March 27, 2013 at 11:49 am

Meh, they look like worn out Space Boots…They’re heavy and you really can’t wear those past 30. I don’t see the attraction what makes them so great.

  72. Israel

    March 27, 2013 at 5:15 pm

They look like Nike Flytops to me. Although, I can’t say that I’ve seen any in the flesh given that I’m from New Zealand and our sneaker releases are lacking to say the least.

There was a black/brown pair that I wanted to get a few years back. Great sneakers for those casual Friday’s in the office.

    March 27, 2013 at 6:44 pm

I picked up a very similar pair of Vans in 2010, rich brown leather high-top. Doesn’t look like they have the same creamy yellow outsoles anymore, but two similar pairs are still on sale from the OTW series
