I’m seeing Birkenstocks and socks everywhere! The new editorial in Vogue Paris, Garance’s blog, and the new J.Crew catalog! I love the idea for men or women. I might have to breakdown and get a pair myself.

To get the look right, it’s not really about the model of shoe but really about matching it to the right sock.

The look is really only made for the months of October, November, April or May, so move fast.

I am a huge fan of Birkenstocks. I have 4. But I really need to add more, because I walk on them like the whole summer. Though, I don’t think I would combine them with socks.

To get the look right….you need to avoid it at all costs…unless you are heading back to the commune to sing by the campfire!

This is a look that is wrong on every level…(period)

Ho are you ever right. I work in a left wing university and I have seen that look on very bright but inelegant people. This is a no no ! Unless you seriously want to look bad.

Totally agreed, when i am barely recovering of seeing crocs everywhere, this awful fad hits the streets and make me lose my faith in humanity

I respect these opinions but I find the bold combination of patterns quite striking and appealing. I guess I would prefer an absence of socks!

Completely agree Mark….it seems the nineties are back . Living in Seattle I can tell you I’ve seen enough of the birk to last a lifetime. I knew denim overalls were back, flannel never left but I didn’t think this would EVER return. Yuck on all levels. Say no to grunge please.

It looks perfectly cool. The fact is that its not for everyone. Its also very flattering, actually and elongates the legs all while giving it that I couldn’t care less vibe. Looks great in the picture. But what I really don’t get is why anyone feels the need to put out a commandment to others. Don’t like-don’t wear. But don’t tell others what to do. Its not nice. Especially as its probably going to look good to you once you take off your blinders and you may feel foolish. I would do it if they came in a style with a back. I hate all sling backs and slides for myself. But I still like the look.

well said, and I agree. wear what’s comfortable for you, whatever your style. I’m still a jeans and tee shirt girl, and I like my grunge/boho style and I wouldn’t change it for anyone. too many people think they can judge fashion just because its something that they would not wear. or they’re on they’re high horses thinking they’re those damn fashionistas.

So, inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest have been ridiculed for decades regarding their wool sock/Birkenstock combos…but J.Crew and/or Vogue Paris do it and it’s suddenly trendy/fashion forward?

Ass backwards if you ask me.

I know, I am so sick of the “trends” of socks in high-heels sandals, socks in pumps, and now socks in Birkenstocks, what next? Some house is going to declare that socks in Crocs are the new thing? I am all for experimenting but some trends just go against the sense of good taste

ha ha socks in crocs, socks in docs! Dr Zeus’ fox in socks???
There’s plenty folk round here in regional Aust wearing socks in crocs. Tres not chic, but amusing all the same.

      March 24, 2013 at 1:08 pm

So funny and so true! I, too, have been wearing socks & ‘stocks for years and been mocked as an “old lady” for it. Now some stylists have made it cool? I object! If I had wanted to be stylish, I wouldn’t have worn them!

Birks work on a select few type of person, and never on a thin person. Legs need to be somewhat stocky to balance the bulk of a pair of Birks. I mostly hate them, but I’ve seen it work.

  13. JWC

    March 22, 2013 at 4:28 pm

    Thinking about Birks?
Yes, thinking about NOT wearing them in this lifetime, or the next!
Should be consigned to the same category as Uggs. Or as a friend of mine calls them; “birth-control.”

  14. Constanze

    March 22, 2013 at 4:29 pm

well…here in Germany a lot of people (men) have been proudly wearing this combination for decades, sometimes also socks & “Adiletten”.

PLEASE Vogue & Scott Schuman: Don’t make them become Trendsetters….Nein nein nein

    • san

      March 24, 2013 at 12:58 pm

My thoughts exactly. I’ve seen this time and again. Ugh. Birkenstocks with socks outside of your flat are an absolute NO!!!! (As houseshoes in the closed version they are fine, anything else no.)

Is Vogue running out of ideas? Obviously.

      Hallo Constanze,

      Hello Constanze,

you are right. The frist thing that came into my mind, when I saw this photograph was “She must be a supporter of the environmental movement or a nurse or working in a kindergarten…” Yes, Germans associate self made socks combined with Birkenstocks with certain clichĂ©s. And now the vogue is jumping on that train…

Are we sure about this? I mean I’m on board but I just wanted to be sure. Many a morning have I walked out to the mailbox in this exact look and scurried back inside for fear that my neighbors would think I was a cat lady!
    I think I’m excited?

    • Marlena

      March 23, 2013 at 10:58 am

Hahah Ryan, thanks for starting my day off with a good laugh.

While I am often one of the most stylishly dressed people on my street (albeit a low bar), I AM also the local cat lady. Couldn’t bear to see one go hungry over the winter and now I’ve gotten myself into a fine mess until at least the warm weather.

Anyway, all to say that the neighbours have seen me in far worse than socks with Birkenstocks. And far better too. Hopefully they agree with me that what is in your heart is way more important than what is on your feet .

Me too! Birks with good wool socks can have a classic earthy/hippie vibe that can look really good, especially, as you say, with cool colors and layers (as in the photo). I simply don’t understand the hate for this look. (Then again, the haters probably can’t understand why I find the most looks sported by Anna Dello Russo and her cohort tiresome and uninteresting.)

  35. timoteo

    March 22, 2013 at 5:14 pm

remember about 7 years back they started popping up all over LA. i just ran the other way and then last summer bought the Arizona model with black suede straps and ohmyword: they work really well with rick owens skirt / shorts and some krisvanassche baggy linen pants rolled up and denim rolled up, really surprised.

just please no on the boston model with the clown like big toe front. they are just whoa! and way too hot for spring or summer.

  36. Colony

Oh come on…. I just can’t deal with this. I don’t mind a Birk, but not with socks. Hell to the no. I give my colleague Reinhard hell about his Birks Plus Socks situation – and I won’t stop now.
On a more positive note, I do like the mix of prints and textures in the first shot. It really works, right down to the socks. But not the Birks.

  48. Dirk

    March 22, 2013 at 6:19 pm

the birks are POLARIZING. i loved them in college. but i was shamed into tossing them, told myself i had grown out of them stylistically.

What? No way… Birkenstocks and socks wouldn’t look acceptable even on the most stylish people of the universe. They’re ugly.

  50. Steven

    March 23, 2013 at 9:29 am

I sincerely think that next to Uggs and Crocs, Birckenstocks are the worst thing that has happened to the world. The socks make them slightly less horrifying though, still I have to look away from this dreadful piece of satanic ugliness.

I truly think this is really American. Choosing comfort and than spicing it up to make it less ghastly. Disappointing lack of tast, mr. Schumann.

It’s not that different from Uggs, flip-flops everywhere besides the beach or a resort, Crocs. There is a time and place for everything. If done right, it can be worn well. And by right, I mean the person has to be confident. With confidence, you can pull off just about anything and everything.

I like them really! On me they look great, without socks, with tanned legs and in a skirt or with jeans. But only the thong model in Golden or the Arizona on suede. It depends totally on how you wear them. A black simple dress, no jewelry, great hair, nice sun glasses and its nothing hippie at all, just chic. I wouldn’t wear them to a dinner though or out at night. But at day time in a city, walking the dogs, meeting friends, going to work. The sock would ok only of you are very young and very pretty, or maybe on Kate Moss. I don’t really believe Scott is going to wear them. Or MAYBE if he goes to the the countryside he might, with some linen trousers, I can see that.

Nice jeans with Birks and socks= Seattle business casual. I think the outfit about is adorable but I’d never wear socks with sandals. If it’s cold enough for wool socks I’m wearing closed toe shoes. And they’d look idiotic with my pencil skirts and tailored pants.

Quite interesting to read everyone’s reaction. Birkenstock + socks are one of the basic combination in Japan. I see these looks a lot around me. :)

    • LIZPR

      March 25, 2013 at 9:08 am

That’s because there is a tradition of geta (the traditional Japanese sandal) and tabi socks (where the big toe is divided from the other toes) as footwear when wearing a kimono.

So an aesthetic of “socks and sandal” is long established in Japan.

That does NOT make a sock and Birk combo acceptable – made even worse when the sock is shoved into a toe divider thingy as per the photo above.

Oh Scott, for years us Brits have been the butt of international jokes for our somewhat dubious habit of holidaying in socks and sandals. It would now seem that the worm has turned…so to speak. We are in fact trendsetters, pioneers you might say… perhaps not… x

Growing up in upstate New York, we ALWAYS wore Birks through the winter with wool socks, especially the ski bums. That and a North Face jacket go perfect together.

  118. MJ

    March 25, 2013 at 8:29 am

Even in Vermont in the 80′s this was a bad idea. Only to be worn in the privacy of your home, tried it once and even then it didn’t feel right. But, hey, those JCrew models will make everything look good!

Yes, it IS the sock that makes the look with Birkenstocks or other sandals. Moreover, the sweater (or outermost shirt) this woman is wearing is really beautiful and combines well with everything else.

Ah yes, the Birkenstocks sandals is pretty much good to go with any socks. I like brown colour to go with dark patterns socks.

But since I’m no longer in the UK (now in Malaysia), I just wear Birkenstocks with no socks.

    Once again people, loosen up!
If you don’t want to wear it, dont! Yes lots of people sport this, and look terrible. That doesn’t mean it can never look good. The world would be a very boring place if everyone dressed as “tastefully” as you!
BTW, no one really cares if you like to wear them without sox. This past is about wearing them WITH sox.

I think that during times of economic and political unrest people seek the comfort of the familiar and conventional and declare it ‘fashion’ to compensate for their own unconscious desires for things that are plain and uncomplicated. There is nothing less complicated than Birkenstocks. They are the shoe equivalent of mac and cheese. This post reminds me that I am drawn to familiar things when I am depressed and they provide me with some solace. I am surprised this post has been so controversial.

I realize that some people will always wear this combo – typically paired with some “art-to-wear” clothes, and it’s okay. It’s okay, because it is not trendy, not elegant, not attractive – and it’s absolutely not trying to be.

As much as I like the idea of taking something that is widely considered to be the definition of unfashionable and flipping it, this doesn’t come off as creative as much as it appears to be a sign that fashionably creative people seem to be running out of ideas.

  136. Kerstin

    March 25, 2013 at 6:32 pm

Oh for heavens sake. Please don’t. As a German I can tell you that Birkenstock are to be worn at home (as slippers), in your garden or at work – when you’re a doctor. That’s it. As comfy as they are – they are not a fashion item and they are not worth 130€. Here they are aroung 30€. I am wearing Birkenstock + socks right now, sitting on my couch. I might bring out the trash like that. But I would never go to town like that.

I think you’re all missing the point. With fashion and style, the rules are MEANT to be broken. Half the things that the fashion greats wear, most of you would think is ridiculous. Remember the rule that navy and black must never be worn together and then YSL changed everything. Theres the rule about no white after labor day, all over fashion week in the fall you see people wearing white. Fashion knows no rules.

My recommendation is birkenstocks are very advisable. To be healthy is beautiful and strong. To build your health you start with your diet and your feet. Birkenstocks of course are very good for your feet while high heals harm the foot and body. One of my very fashionable lady friends hasn’t walked for three months after she walked on a sloped driveway in too high heals and twisted around her ankle. I’ve always though a woman looks more beautiful in shoes that don’t make her teeter and put her at risk, that give her a strong connection to the ground so she can be strong in the world. It doesn’t have to be birkenstocks, it can also be sneakers or flats. Birkenstocks are good for men too. For myself and all men I think it is best never to expose the foot. I am currently wearing the maine model shoe.

Beyond that they are good for you and therefore make you healthy and beautiful they are good well designed modern objects without extra adornment. That is always a fashionable thing.

I remember Charlotte Perriand who helped invent the modern world in her designs. She wore nike sneakers up to when she died at 96. She stayed modern and strong that way.

      Haruki san,

Wakarimasu! I agree. Very high heels are sexy, but at the same time, unattractive to me, because I know they’re bad for the body and incredibly uncomfortable (for me, anyway). I like the look of a shoe with a smaller heel or a flat, so that, yes, a woman looks strong and connected to the earth (I like that!).

I don’t have a problem with the Birks, per se – they come in a variety of fun colours and patterns and in the summer, are very comfortable… and with a cute outfit, will do.

It’s the Birks with the SOCKS that most people object to! This isn’t geta to tatami, ne! This is Birks with SOCKS! Da-me, da-me, desu ne!

      (han-bun desu.)

  151. Jeannine

    March 27, 2013 at 10:28 am

Hahaha, it appears i’ve been ahead of the game :-)
I’ve been wearing my birks with tabi socks for years. I handknit them specifically for the purpose. That way I get longer wear out of my sandals before my feet get too cold. On a cold but dry day nice woollen socks withstand surprisingly low temperatures. I do make sure to colour coordinate my socks with my outfit or my jeans. By the way, if you’ve ever worn handknit socks specifically sized for your toes and feet I challenge you to ever go back to store bought, won’thappen :-)

I have been criticized by everyone in my circle for rocking this look my entire life. Socks with sandals, especially Birks, is one of the most carefree, comfortable, and I think stylish combinations for fall and spring. My go-to look was validated in the Ralph Lauren coffee table book, where there is a photo of a young Ralph Lauren, style ICON, sporting knee-high cable knit socks with Birkenstocks and cut-off jean shorts (another favorite of mine). Glad to see this is becoming more acceptable. Sad to see my look on everyone else.

Birkies with Socks forever!! Just a heads up for all you self-proclaimed fashionistas… I wear socks with my Birks for several reasons:

    1. I have neuropathy, and birks are the ONLY shoes I can comfortably wear all day. I wear them year round, and I live in Winterland!

    2. I wear them with socks on all but the warmest days to KEEP MY FEET WARM.

    3. I wear Birks with Socks when I want to be just a bit more dressed and less casual.

    4. Travel to Europe some time… Birks and socks are EVERYWHERE.

    5. Birkenstock’s CEO says YES to Birks with socks!!

How can anyone criticize Birkenstocks when they’re worn by mostly intelligent and critical thinking people. I had several professors in college who worn them. My sociology professor worn tan Birkenstocks with a dress shirt, tie, jacket and Levi 501′s almost ever day. I thought it looked pretty cool. I don’t think Birkenstocks look bad at all paired with a nice pair of rag wool socks in the cooler months. As for myself I’ve never owned a pair of Birkenstocks:( I’m considering getting a pair of Birkenstock Milano’s next spring. I really like the classic, simple look of that sandal. I know they’re expensive but you get what you pay for. German quality that no one else in the world can master!

People wear Birk’s because they’re downright the most comfortable shoes/sandals on planet earth! I so tire of the high and mighty fashion police who represent a mere iota of humanity. I purchased my first pair of Birkenstock sandals a year ago, the Milano style with a back strap, and I wear them practically everywhere. I find the looks of these sandals as having a simple yet classic appearance. Of course Brkenstock sandals are not dress shoes, and they certainly look more mature than say a pair of Converse high tops, and they’re way more comfy too! I’m forever a devout Birkenstocker!

Yup. Birk Bostons and white athletic quarter socks with my shorts. To hell with all of you. I simply CAN’T wear without socks because my feet sweat like crazy. With socks…they don’t sweat. Plus, the Birks offer instant relief for my plantar fasciitis.

I’m 50 this year and have decided how I look when doing errands and working on weekends doesn’t matter.

And anyone who assumes I’m some weak beta granola is in for one hell of surprise.
