I would really expect smth more original in job description than:
“Extremely organized and quick learner”, “Impeccable written and verbal communication skills”, “Proactive, resourceful, positive, and efficient”.
Sounds like a job post in some Food Multinational Corpo…

Too bad I don’t graduate for six months–couldn’t you have waited a little bit? Come on, six months without an assistant could be an opportunity for finiding yourself, right? Who am I kidding, I don’t know anything about maintaining photographic equipment.

Everytime I view this site.. I often dream of landing such a grand opportunity to work for the one and only, Mr. Schuman. I have been an Exect. Asst. for the entirety of my 20s and I am now in my early 30′s and everyone has their own specialties and talents and certainly my talent, relies heavily on my skills as an Assistant. I know it may sound so trivial being one, but quite the contrary. An Assistant is the left hand man/woman of the employer or such. Without an Assistant, one would find it quite difficult to function and maintain a company in such a way that one would find it most suitable. Since I was a little girl, while everyone is dreaming of becoming a doctor, lawyer, fireman/woman, businessman, so forth and so on; I only ever dreamt of one career and such is the moment I saw a certain film regarding… I have wanted every waking day to find an employer who would give me my one dead set goal of being the most helpful, hands- on, dedicated, loyal and outstanding Exect. Assistant… and I thank my Lord every day that I get to wake up in the morning… prep to hustle and work to impress and satisfy my employers’ needs, satisfaction and standards. I know what I have and such is this… I am darn well among the most talented lefthand woman an owner can ever have and it’s all due in part to my obsession of one day being an outstanding “working woman” and the need of feeling that I am wanted and needed workwise. Hence, I wish I were there in NYC so that I may have such a dream to at least showcase my expertise to Mr. Schuman. Whomever lands it… I am seething with pure envy and I tip my hat to you, good friend..

Well, I’d emigrate to do this job! My only skill would be a knowledge of French which I didn’t see on the job spec! We all know how tricky Parisians can be when it comes to speaking English to order! Good luck to the successful candidate – what a brilliant opportunity and I just LOVE the way it’s been advertised so openly. BRILLIANT and good on you Sartorialist!

I just don’t know why someone who graduated with a bachelor’s would want to be someone’s assistant. Even if that someone is great.

    Hello Gina,
I do not understand your point really. I have a Bachelor’s Degree and I do not understand why someone with a B. degree WOULD NOT work for Sartorialist. He is doing his job so professionally, that’s why. You need to see the big picture, arranging travels and other necessities professionally requires someone who is well qualified. Good luck Scott, hope you can find the right person.

I applied as soon as I saw the posting. Subsequently, nearly everyone one of my friends who enjoys this blog as much as I do, emailed me to ask me if I’d seen the posting. I’m hoping that cry to the universe will pan out. In any event, I’m sure you’ll be overwhelmed with apps for the job!

    I second the boring dentist, I wish I wasn’t a boring pharmacist!

  34. Eunice

    December 9, 2011 at 12:02 am

Gina- First of all, being an Assistant is to have the opportunity to learn from someone great, and to learn from someone who is in the position they are in for a reason. I’ve assisted a couple different people in the past few years and they have not only become mentors and great friends to me, but they were experiences that I will value for the rest of my life.

There is a lot that goes into being an Assistant and it takes MORE than just a bachelor’s degree to be one. Anyone with respect and a strong work ethic would understand that. I hope you know how ignorant you made yourself sound from that comment of your’s. By the way, I guarantee you that EVERY single person who is in a position of status, would NOT be able to function without a personal assistant.

Boooooo to Gina….there is NOTHING wrong with being someones assistant, it’s a great job and can lead you down a lots of different paths. I don’t know why you would even leave a comment.

Whoever gets the job is very lucky, I’d love to apply but living in London – a bit too far for my work commute!

  39. LULU

    December 9, 2011 at 10:34 am

Really? Have you been reading the news? As a recent graduate (summa cum laude may I add), we can barely find jobs, let alone be “picky” and assume we are better than any available opportunity. n personal assistant is a wonderful apprenticeship and stepping stone to bigger things. I’m curious what you did right out of college and what you’re doing now.

Dream job for me too + I would love to be based in NY, but unfortunately I live in Paris and am in no way qualified to maintain your photographic equipment… But I’m pretty sure I’d be a damn good assistant (yes Gina I would like to apply to this job eventhough I have two Masters Degrees!).

    December 9, 2011 at 12:39 pm

i’m surprised there’s no mention of language skills being sought – french, etc.

this job probably pays almost nothing but the experience would be amazing for someone wanting to be in this industry. that person would meet soooo many influential, important people. it’s really the job posting of the year. nobody posts opportunities like this to the public. lol.

    good luck.

Gina: I have a MASTER’S DEGREE and if I were based in NYC I’d apply for this job in a heartbeat. While it’s true that life is a kind of trajectory, that trajectory is often broken up into segments or chapters. I’ve been following Scott’s blog from almost the very beginning and this is one of many, many life chapters I would LOVE to experience. Best of luck to those who choose to go for this opportunity!

  50. Sebastian

    December 11, 2011 at 3:34 pm

@Gina- I don’t know if you read the job requirements but, it pretty much boils down to running Mr Schuman’s business! And that excludes the adobe suite requirements which leads one to think the job applicant may be required to do photo editing or such.

I think the Degree may also be seen as proof of the applicant’s ability and drive to work hard and manage time and pressure.
