I always hate fur on guys. It's way too over the top, too cocky and emasculating imo. He normally does have good style though.

Honestly? Kanye in fur? Arrogance and obnoxiousness at its worst.

Mmmm. I like the photo, I think you've captured an honest shot of him. Yup.

I also hate men in fur coats. It is the epitome of tacky to me and just way too extravagant.

    i fuckin hate kanye west
he is really arrogant, i really don't like him
also his style is over the top and doesn't contain any identity: he is rich and buys everything what is cool…..

you can do better than this Scott, kanye is way over the top, nobody gets inspired by him

    shuttershades *ughugh*

props to you on capturing the face

    there's something rather vulnerable there

especially while being clad in fur

props to you on not only being a photographer or fashion photographer, but an artist

it's shots like these when i remember the sensation of realism found in these pictures

    i don't like fur

i love the paradox that is kanye

    but most of all

i love what you've caught here

I agree. I look at your photo's for shots you wouldn't see anywhere else. Kanye is rude, egotistical, and a prime example of nouveau riche at it's worst.

  16. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 7:51 pm

An appalling lack of class and human warmth.

A disappointment to see on your (normally so tastefully edited) blog.

no matter what our personal feelings are about Kanye, there is no disputing the fact that he has become a major fashion influence.
it is at times baffling who the trendsetters are…

  18. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 7:54 pm

I love this shot because it is mostly just face with a fringe of fur. As others have said it's honest — it strips out as much of the intentionally pompous trappings as possible. Well done.

While I agree with most of you regarding the personality of Kanye West, I do not really understand why this would be of any matter here. This is a blog containing pictures of well-dressing people, personality is not an issue.

The shot itself is good, but I cannot say it shows a person with excelent style. It looks more like some sort of promo-shot.

    January 27, 2010 at 7:58 pm

lol @ all the elitists hating on Kanye.

    great shot. beautiful.

  22. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 8:00 pm

    Too many whiners here.
I don't like the shot either. But only because it's too zoomed in and doesn't let us see his complete wardrobe.

  23. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 8:00 pm

I love you Scott, but this time I have to agree with the majority that (I can't believe I'M the one who's gonna say that first, but..) "I'mma let you finish, but Kanye made the best douchebaggery in all time!"

    Plus, he's corny, really.

  24. Anonymous

Screw kanye, I want that coat!! Thanks for capturing the softness of the fur – i can almostfeel it on my face

dude. kanye? come on. style is about attitude too and his is pure fugly. please keep up the integrity of this blog. kanye = stronzo.

  28. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 8:03 pm

"honest", "vulnerable"?? give me a break. This guy lives to be photographed. He is the definition of superficial.

  29. Ayinde

    January 27, 2010 at 8:03 pm

First and foremost the photograph is GREAT. Secondly, he is fashion forward. his personality and attitude should not matter, most of us don't know the personality and attitudes of most of the people in this lovely blog.

  30. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 8:03 pm

agrees with both detractors and plaudits alike.. i'd wanted to survey the comments to find a singular positive about kanye, but even the purporters of support know he's egotistical and garish.. though his style is questionable and way below the standard of the Sartorialist… but it is an honest capture! i will give aesthetic credit where such is due.

  31. elaina brillantes

    January 27, 2010 at 8:04 pm

honestly, music politics and personalities aside, this is a great shot. kanye can really pull off this fur. i don't care what your subject is, as long as they continue to be beautiful in their own way, and as long as you capture that beauty.

you could photograph miley cyrus and i wouldn't care, seeing as i'm a rabid miley-hater. as long as the photo is magnificent, that's all that matters to me. :) cheers

    He is gross!

  33. Daphne

    January 27, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I have to agree that he is nouveau riche at its worst. That was well put, above commenter. Scott- this is a lovely photo. There is a lot of expression and I love the framing and everything…but I have to agree with the sentiments of most of the other commenters…he is not inspiring or creative. I think I understand that you are less about judging (good or bad) a person's style you see, and more about noticing nuances of personal style/choices people make. I am completely on board with that, and I see how that doesn't necessarily make Kanye West exempt. However, so many of the people you feature on your blog care so much about telling a story with their fashions and it feels personal. With him it feels artificial and posed. He just doesn't seem to deserve a spot among these dozens of other deeply fashionable and creative people.
    Hope this doesn't offend.
Your photograph really is stunning, though.

  35. José Maria

    January 27, 2010 at 8:11 pm

If this kind of "celebrity", with no elegance at all, starts appearing on this otherwise inspiring blog…well, then…no further comments.

  36. God's Favorite Shoes!

    January 27, 2010 at 8:13 pm

Why is everyone talking about this man as if they know him? This is a photography blog. He looks like a human to me who wears clothes (or fur).

I have my personal opinions of him but the issue is the photo.

To be honest, I don't even see the fur first…I see the sadness in his eyes first. That means you did your job as a photographer.

    Well done.

Judge ye not…unless ye be judged. (I don't know if that's an actual scripture but it sounds good in my head! LOL)

  37. Klassik

    January 27, 2010 at 8:13 pm

What you other so-called "Sartorialists" seem to fail to realize is that sometimes true style and fashion is being able to wear what you like and what successfully portrays your confidence/personality/inner style despite the opinions of others (I call it the 'i could give a F' attitude)…we all know his personality is over-the-top/rude/arrogant, blasé blasé…thank you captain obvious', now relize that him in this fur but the emphasis on his expression is a great job of the photographer of catching his essence and style through more than just his apparel…

  38. Buweneke

    January 27, 2010 at 8:16 pm

I think Kanye himself would love to read these comments. The fur, tacky as it is, works with his personality. I think its a great picture

  39. ivanabev

    January 27, 2010 at 8:16 pm

some say you have caught an "honest moment", i say you got manipulated by a manipulator. that's the mask he wanted you to capture that day: "see everyone…i'm really vulnerable and misunderstood; you can see it in my eyes.." Bullshit. Ridiculous fur.

  40. Mary

    January 27, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Right, because you all know the exact personalities of everyone else Scott's previously shot (and they're all perfect)? It's a good picture, and I love the vulnerability shown.

Leave your biases behind, and appreciate what it is.

  41. Anna

    January 27, 2010 at 8:20 pm

    I completely agree with Nadia.
Although I do not respect Kanye as a person, I do enjoy his music and his fashion.
You're probably going to get a lot of heat for this shot, you already have from these commenters, but I love the shot.

  42. sanmiguelense

    January 27, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Compare and contrast the gentleman below in the grey and brown and mashed up fedora with the plaintive look of Kanye West!

I am thankful Scott that you are there taking it all in from the over the top to the under the radar!

  43. Addy* Sue

    January 27, 2010 at 8:21 pm

Imma let you finish, Scott, imma let you finish. Okay, you're done? Seriously?

To be truly honest, I really like this shot.

    But, Kanye… I agree. Arrogant, egotisical… everything.

Like she said, "at times it is baffling who the tredsetters are.

I visit your blog daily to see original and tasteful style. There is nothing original and tasteful about this guy. Fur on a man is definitely a no no.

  48. Caio

    January 27, 2010 at 8:25 pm

you`re used to looking for people who have, above all, a personal and unique point of view towards "fashion" (not necessarilly fashion with a capital "F", like you`ve said yourself before), and then there`s Kanye, who is interested in nothing but social afirmation by wearing all of the most expensive garments out there, with no coherence or, dar I say it, even real passion for it.
I don`t know, I respect whatever it is that you`re trying to do here, I just don`t seem to agree with it.

You are on the right blog. This is a style/fashion blog. And when it comes to male artists Kanye West leads fashion wise. GREAT shot, even though i'm not a fan of fur.

"too cocky and emasculating imo …"
i wonder what male eskimos must be thinking. the cock-sure yet emasculated darlings!!!!!

on a different note, it is an honest moment, yes, but somehow i don't believe he looks vulnerable. if anything, he always has a "fed-up" look about him imho and this particular moment is no different.

I think this shot is beautiful, and captures something that isn't like all the normal over-the-top cocky Kanye West shots there are out there. Once again, beautiful work.

  65. Tasha

    January 27, 2010 at 8:46 pm

Finally got you to take a picture of him, did he? I remember reading something about how at some show or another, he kept walking past you in the hopes that you would take his picture.

It's an interesting departure from your normal perspective; it makes me wonder what you left out of the picture, and conjecture that it wasn't positive.

I don't find it an honest shot–although your composition is engaging–he's put on his version of a "model face." I see it all the time on my students, posturing when they're trying to be cool. It's a mask, and while one might have sympathy for the soul that feels the need to use it, it's not one I'll ever find aesthetically or morally appealing.

  66. Anonymous

  69. Jody

    January 27, 2010 at 8:55 pm

I agree with the usually-perfect editing. I don't think extravagance is the problem here – many people featured in this blog are wearing thousands of dollars worth of clothing. What I dislike is that this particular brand of extravagance seems sort of…meaningless? He's in fur. It's luxurious. The end.

There's also something in his expression that irritates me; it feels so affected, like.. "What? This is me being 'real'. Can I help it if I'm rich and famous?"

    Argh, Scott!!!

  70. Anonymous

Ya'll are hatin', I love Kanye, & you've captured beautiful emotion in his face.

    January 27, 2010 at 8:57 pm

Look at all these negative comments being allowed. I've posted the most mild, non personal critiques and had them removed before. It makes me wonder if his picture was posted just to give him a bashing.

my first thought exactly, am I on the right blog? I like coming on here, nice break in the day. I don't care for or dislike kanye. This picture however has a certain thing- sadness? I am not sure but especially in his fur..this picture — could be because half his face is covered. I like.

  77. Nathan

    January 27, 2010 at 9:07 pm

I must also express my disappointment with seeing Kanye here. I value The Sartorialist for its democratic subversion of the industry element in fashion, allusions to the creative potential of 'normal' individuals, and provocative notion that there might be something truly organic in consumer culture. Kanye epitomizes the antithesis of all of these ideals.

Stay true to what you've always done, Scott. I'm a big fan.

Dear Anonymous, please, don't stress me. If you like to eat meat, so don't say lies and lies calling Kanye West as bad man. He is stylish, and he was amazing at the fashion shows, I wish I could have took a picture with him, damn security guards!

Ok, i love this site, but this photo needs to go. Is this photo posted cause of the fur, or cause it's Kanye West. He has celebrity style, and it may have been picked for him. Just doesn't belong. Nice pic though

  100. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 9:51 pm

I come to this site for photography; it's completely irrelevant what I think of Kanye.

We simply comment on the photograph and what the subject is wearing (and sometimes conjecture about why)…everyone got derailed because he's a celebrity.

    It's a beautiful picture, Scott!

  101. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Scott, I'm so disappointed with this photo. Kanye will never deserve to be on your wonderful blog, especially adorned in fur. He is the epitome of arrogance and is completely conceited in every possible way. How is he a sartorialist? He is in no way fit for the fashion industry and should just stay put in his disreputable position in the music biz.

  102. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Honestly Sart, I think you took a picture of Kanye's face to see what the reaction to him would.

The focal point of Kanye's style is never his face it is how he wears his clothes, which is unique. There are other pictures you have taken of West where you can see his whole outfit, and they are better.

  103. Anonymous

    January 27, 2010 at 9:52 pm

i don't think that people have the right to so passionately criticize someone that they do not know. listen to kanye's music and you'll realize that he is a genius artist, and has plenty of personality. i personally think kanye dresses ridiculously well and puts things together in a very unique way. why wouldn't you buy louis V if you could afford that shit?

what i love about this photo is that it captures the self-doubt that is underneath the cocky facade kanye is famous for. great shot!

i love all of the hate on here, though. it's hilarious.

Kanye is a sell out and after what he did to that Swift girl, he should never grace your pages; he lacks class, something you seem to have a great deal of. He is a filthy pig! This pic doesn't even highlight anything he is wearing, just seems to be a name drop via pics. You are better than this, as others have said.

    Haha…Kanye is the BEST.

You know, Mary pointed out something very, very true. You don't know a thing about the other people Scott posts in here. Certainly you wouldn't like some of them. You may even think some of them are worse than Kanye. Yet you celebrate the clothes they wear. I think that's really all you should be looking at here.

Unfortunately, while this is a lovely portrait, there's not much to be seen of the rest of the outfit. I don't think it flows with the rest of The Sartorialist. Just my opinion.

Photo took my breath away cause I wasn't expecting to see him. I love how it is cropped up close, and the fur, which y'all know I love me some fur. It is Scott's blog, and as per usual he always puts on a great picture. Let's put this all in perspective. In our world of disaster and destruction, having a moment to "escape" to blogs is something that many of us look forward too. I mean, if you guys get all in a huffy about this photo and the subject, I wonder what other people say when they read about my worldly sexual life on my blog? Why sensor what we put out there? Aren't we suppose to share everything we see and feel?Non?

in my opinion, his artistry can not be reckoned with. i hope that he finds his way back.

I don't care about the fact that West can be unbecoming and classless. I am into style. Having said that, if you consider West a style icon please tell me who has he influenced. Who?????!!!!!! He is simply a consumer. What is his style philosophy that has inspired???!!!!!!!! He is not a style icon.

Anyone who puts West in the same league with Ralph Lauren, Agnelli, Grant and the other greats, should not be taken seriously.

    January 27, 2010 at 10:04 pm

Dear Anonymous, please, don't stress me. If you like to eat meat, so don't say lies and lies calling Kanye West as bad man. He is stylish, and he was amazing at the fashion shows, I wish I could have took a picture with him, damn security guards!

Style-wise we need him. He's experimental. Musically he's interesting, again he's experimental. Just like everybody else he exercises bad judgement ocassionally. It would be a shame to condemn him for everything. He's a valuable human being just like everybody else. He could use a little compassion.

He is without a doubt, a talented man.

But it's a shame that he's just not much of a man.

Being a real fashion icon is more than just the clothes and celebrity.

(Plus the fact that this shot is only of his face rather than his outfit is an overall comment on him rather than his style.)

Ok, whoa, all the hating is gettin' heavy. All of those criticizing sart for diverging from his usual subject matter are apparently missing the point of this blog. This is not the first time his lens has captured a subject whose style may be deemed extravagant. I think the sart tunes in to people whose style seems to express or hint at something of their inner lives, their imaginations, their world.

From people struggling with homelessness to editors of vogue, the pictures on this blog always inspire a kind of curiosity about those being photographed. I inevitably end up wondering about their lives. We don't come to look at pictures of personalities, nor do we come to see clothes, but the magical fusion of the two that ultimately creates style. That's what makes the pictures INTERESTING. That's the point. Don't let the fact that we all know that Kanye can be a donkey-hole ruin the fact that it is a great photograph. Whether you think it captures sadness or arrogance, the point is that Kanye's expression, coupled with the decadent fur, makes for an interesting, thought-provoking shot.

Kanye vs. Lapo? I guess the sins of the nouveau riche are worse than the sins of blue blooded. If you think Kanye West is a tasteless wag, what about Lapo Elkann? (a few shots below) Give it a break people. For a U.S. blog the comments here are surprising uptight and un-democartic (not to mention verging on narrowed ethnic/racial preferences) Kanye is sartorial mane. Lapo? Wow! You could study both men for tips.

    –"original and tasteful"

–"However, so many of the people you feature on your blog care so much about telling a story with their fashions and it feels personal. With him it feels artificial and posed. He just doesn't seem to deserve a spot among these dozens of other deeply fashionable and creative people."

strange how most of the posts today have become self righteous and nasty. i too have posted some mild -to say the least- criticism of at least one of the "tired" looking fashionistas on this blog and it was never posted.

sart, you have intervened before, chastising posters for being rude or nasty while trying to make their point. are you trying to make a point this time?

i definitely don't see the sartorial difference between kayne's fashion today, the fur lady from Barcelona or the giant, puffed zebra sleeves with 5 inch heels from a much beloved editor. what story was she trying to tell? how was it in any way original or tasteful? tasteless, today?

do we KNOW any of these editors/fashionistas that are regularly featured on this blog? do we KNOW if they are sweet, humble beings? or craven, arrogant, avaricious beast? for the record, i don't KNOW kanye west but i don't agree with throwing the knives today.

I understand Kanye is one of the few celebrities you shoot, but i feel like his fascination with fashion only comes from his wealth and popularity. I don't even know if he has any personal style. He has great clothes, but does he tries too hard to make himself look good? …

If you didn't know this portrait was of "Kanye West" (a performer playing his public role), what would you think? What if this portrait was of a man you have never heard of before? If the portrait was titled "At Louis Vuitton…Paris"? Would the comments focus more on the politics of the fur? Wanting to find out who that man might be? Why he looks directly at the photographer?

The comments seem to be targeted more towards the perceived personality of someone many of us have never met (and probably won't ever meet). That doesn't negate Mr. Schuman's framing, cropping, lighting, focus and all of the other elements of artistry it takes to produce a good photograph.

Why is everyone hating on this photo? Kanye has 4 times the style of probably anyone on this site. Not to mention he could own any one of you in a second. That may sound like a hasty defense of him. But, he has done so much with the industry, not only fashion but production and music are just his elementary jobs. He and his hip hop companions have revolutionized urban culture. If anything we should be thanking him, he successfully turned the group of once baggy clothes and 30 pound chain wearing, into fashion sensitive, well put together stand up individuals. Im not sure there are many designers today who can say they have done that, and I certainly know that none of you have. Also, you may want to take a look at just where he is… Louis Vuitton, next time one of you are a VIP there you let me know.

I don't even care about being obscene with fur, I don't even care if a man wears it (well, as long as it looks in its proper place) so to me this photo is (as another commentator above stated) honest.

Now he's just an.. intriguing individual. He is controversial, and I think this photo sums it up. Look at his expression, it seems as though he knows that he is being brutally honest. And what looks like a regular t-shirt under the lord-knows-what-animal-that-is coat balances out the whole outfit. I only pray that there were no neon colored pants beneath it.
As far as I'm concerned, it's his life, let him deal with his own issues.

I think this photo is brilliant. I have to disagree with the comments that say this is just like the photos on all the other sites. The look on Kanye's face is 100% genuine and you can tell when you look at this compared to most of his other photos and I feel like this picture shows how Kanye has a lot more to him than what his reputation says about him. So I would like to applaud Scott for continually capturing people's true colours. Yeah Kanye makes ridiculous outbursts here and there and the way he approaches them is totally uncalled for but I don't think he is wrong when he says them.

I love this blog but think it is a big shame that Kanye has made it on.. the majority of people photographed have an inherent effortless style that shines through, the photographs capture a natural beauty, regardless of whether they have spent time on their attire or not. Kanye's style is far from effortless..

  146. Anonymous

I love the Sartorialist because I get sick of having celebrities in my face on TV and in magazines and in advertisements. I love seeing the people in the photographs at what seems like a spontaneous moment in their daily lives and imagining a story to go with their style. I like seeing the unique pieces that reveal their own unique personalities.

I don't get that from this photo regardless of the fact that it's Kanye West. A great celebrity portrait (whether you like him or not)as a photograph and as an image of a person. Great for a celebrity portrait collection because this is a very different image and clothing than we usually see of Mr. West.

However, definitely not my favourite from the Sartorialist blog.

I feel that this is a tremendous image. I was most struck by the weariness and distance is Kanye's eyes even though he's literally surrounded by extravagance. On this blog Scott has shown fashionable people that don't earn a tenth of what Kanye makes in a day but exude an "inner style" that make them captivating. This image is important because it speaks to the notion that style and the way one presents himself to the world may be directly proportional to his level of happiness.

What I like in this picture is the contrast between his face, which seems tough (lips and beard are nearly geometric), and the softness in his eyes & of the fur. I don't have to do any judgement about this guy, but I really like the picture.

Kanye is human, just like you. His pain, just as real as yours'. Kanye's arrogance comes from a place few of you can relate to: he literally made himself from the ground up. He worked to get where he is today. Because he had passion and conviction and, of course, ego. To achieve fame you need a little ego, a little confidence. Kanye is an icon, he's more than just another celebrity. He represents creative expression, fearlessness, and the ability to take a chance when the odds are against you. Kanye is who he is, and he's always been that way. That's what makes him so great, his ability to stand in his shoes and at the end of the day, know that he wasn't pretending, no matter how much of an ass he made of himself. I'm not going to take an apologists stand at the end because I firmly beleive Kanye has style. And as he says, "I used the arrogance as the steam to power my dream."

Just give him a chance. He looks great, always.

I'm sad to see so many simple minded people comment on an otherwise impeccable blog, but… its a blog and as such open to public opinion. While, I don't agree with his attittude I understand that its that very attitude that drives both his music and style. Scott, great picture of a great artist and stylish individual. Honestly, the nerve of te hypocrites to do to him what he did to Taylor… I'm not judging simply observing.

    January 28, 2010 at 12:27 am

Please, he totally pulls this off. He's bossy and he's got an opinion. It's INTERESTING. There are those who believe Kanye deserves his humiliation. I guess by now I have seen enough of life that I prefer to see someone as a real complicated human being rather than brand him or her a hypocrite. Human life, including sex, abounds with hypocrisy, faithlessness, carelessness and people who say "I love you" when they really mean "I want you." People who say "my spouse doesn’t understand me," when they really mean, "my spouse knows me to well." Most adults can supply their own examples.

But the point is, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT COMPLEXITY. Complexity is crucial to appraisal (animal, mineral, political or sartorial). :) It is the substance that makes Scott's work so fascinating. Keep up the good work!

I think it's a bit sad that everyone is so caught up in the fact that it is Kanye West here… if it were any man other than Kanye in this photograph, would it have evoked such a negative reaction, or would these viewers simply allow themselves to recognize the subtleties so masterfully captured in this photograph?

You've done a wonderful job of capturing a softness and vulnerability to his face, and this, contrasting with the implied toughness and masculinity in the fur, creates a wonderful representation of this man's personality.

To all those who say that they look to The Sartorialist for photographs they cannot find elsewhere, or that this photograph does not capture any remarkable inner style, I would disagree. This photo really cannot be found anywhere else, at least, I've never seen any photo quite like this. An unknown, sensitive side is revealed here. As for the inner style, I wouldn't be one to judge so quickly because only a small fraction of the outfit is displayed; however, the contrast between the luxurious fur and the plain-crew necked shirt creates an interesting juxtaposition. However, I would argue that here, the focus is most likely not completely on the clothing. I, for one, am enamored with the persona so elegantly captured in this photograph.

took the time to read all the comments and i think many are not give enough thoughts..

i have to disagree with those who say the blog is just about clothes, rather than personality. if you read you should know Scott has been trying to tell stories more than just "clothes".

and who are you to tell him to take it off or Kanye West doesn't deserve it? yes he is definitely arrogant but who knows what Scott's real thoughts are putting it up here? if he sees something there he simply posts it and that's the purpose of the blog.

anyway, Scott has shot Kayne before so i guess they are friends (at least know each other)? we must all have experienced meet someone and you guys are cool, people keep talking shit about this guy but he never does anything to you so you just stay neutral, right?

i am a fan of the blog because there are a lot of inspirations, but how can you say you love every single one of them? some to me are just boring expensive clothes.
so this is just another one that you don't happen to like.

  174. Lucy

    January 28, 2010 at 1:33 am

Wow, these comments are all so interesting. First, I love the formal properties of this image: the framing, the contrast of line (t-shirt + hairline), texture (skin +fur), and the narrow colour range (white grading through beige, brown and black), and the sinuous lines (horizontal and vertical.
It strikes me that many of these comments are responding to Kanye West's image as much as his style (he's not really on my radar, so I didn't respond to these issues).
To me it's a wonderful and revealing portrait in the manner of Goya, an artist who was a master of portraying the greed, vanity and sense of entitlement of Spanish royalty in the early 1800s. You can see so much in this portrait – the sense of entitlement, the narcissism, the ennui, the damaged beauty, the loss of joy. It's fabulous.

I hate to use this blog to bash on Kanye but it infuriates me that he gets so much fashion press. The fur is over-the-top and distasteful and while I'm not an animal rights activist, it looks far better on animals than him. I don't think Kanye has remarkable style, but rather that he has a lot of money and knows people that do whom he tries to imitate. I expect inspired street photography from this blog, a breath of fresh air in a world that is all too often dominated by uninspiring celebrities. This disappoints me.

Kanye is not the first celebrity you ever took a photo of, why is everyone acting like you are "suddenly" doing something new?

Beautiful photo. You definitely captured the sadness and the swag.

P.S: Isn't there a chance that this could be faux-fur? How come no one talks about that? Everyone ooohs and ahhhs over crocodile bags and leather boots. What do you think they're made out of? (I'll tell you a secret, puppies! Jk)

Stop the hypocrisy and appreciate the beauty.

Wow lots of Kanye detractors on here…

The fact most of us think we 'know' the personality of the famous person in this shot should not influence our appreciation of this photo. Regardless of whether he is showing us a face or mask.

I'm not a fan of Kanye but I liked this shot the moment I saw it. The positioning, texture and colour exxaggerates his face, skin and expression. The arrogant pucker of his lips, tired eyes and over the top fur makes it an interesting picture. The muted colours soften it all up. Yeah it looks like a promo shot but dang, it is a good promo shot!!

Personality and style go hand in hand, and kanye has made it his life mission to push his arrogant, obnoxious, rude personality onto the world, so it goes without saying this picture portrays one big ugly douchebag – thats what I'm seeing in his eyes anyway.
It looks like hes practised this pout in his bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, loungeroom, laundry, private cinema,50car garage, dressing room mirrors, every spare minute whilst waiting and biding his time for the moment when the Sartorialist is having a slow day.
I can see him looking for his reflection in the camera lens.

    January 28, 2010 at 2:50 am

Well, I'm not a expert in fashion photography, but I think the main thing is; is somebody wants to make a shot like this, he should! If somebody want to try his luck in the music-industry, and put on fur, act a bit cocky…he should!

Kanye has the guts to try things out….and he is smart enough to know that a lot of people will hate him for it. Though..he keeps trying..and trying.

As can be seen by all of the comments: Kanye is somebody who has the courage to take a choose. I think he is a guy with big successes and big failures…a more intense, bigger and more intreating person then all the haters and commentators on this blog.

Kanye is a douche and I can't say that I find him stylish at all, especially seeing all the recent paparazzi shots with Amber Rose. From what I've seen they just looked trashy for most of the couture shows, as well as the Menswear shows. Disappointed with this shot.

Kanye has somehow managed to anger the entire political spectrum of white people.

Bush didn't care about black people.
Taylor Swift didn't deserve that award.
    Kanye can pull off fur.

For a sartorially gifted, non fur-wearing hip-hop genius, see Mos Def.

i definitely think all the negativity towards Kanye is because of the whole infamous VMA 09 night. But maybe i'm wrong. I thought what Kanye did was complete douchery and I thought his actions were provoked by alcohol…..but,alas, life goes on, Taylor Swift has moved and hence why we should move on. I still think Kanye has a pretty sick wardrobe. His vocal chops are pretty sick as well. I also think this photo is pretty sick.

I don't think it matters how much you don't like Kanye West. I don't think it matters how much of a completely awful person he seems to be.

He does have a very strong sense of style, even if some people think it is tacky, or over indulgent. Perhaps people's feelings on his personality are skewing their perception.

Fur makes a strong statement to me, and it still manages to be overshadowed by his expression, which just looks so sad to me. This photograph seems like an excellent example of someone who is able to be heard over his statement pieces.

That said, he's still a douche. Just an iconic one.

it makes me sad to see how extremely judgmental some of these commenters can be. who is anyone (besides scott) to say that someone does or does not deserve to be on this blog?

it is a great photo; it has elicited some strong emotions.

  197. Anonymous

I'm surprised at all the negative comments this photo is receiving due to Kanye West's personality and attitude. I, by all means, am not defending him or saying he's right but give the man a break and take this blog for what it is; great photos of people with great style. We can never be sure that everyone else photographed here on this site is not arrogant or selfish but we'd like to think so. Just because more people know Kanye West's personality does not make this a less beautiful photo of a man with great confident style. Love it Scott!

Scott already shot Kanye, so I guess our host thinks he is sartorially interesting.

I have to admit that I don't really know who he is but I don't like this photo.

Everyone who is praising the photo is saying that "i like the sadness of the photo" sort of thing.

But hey, why does he have to be sad in front of the camera at the Louis Vuitton show?? It just looks so unnatural.

Is that what you wanted to capture about him????

It is just a fake expression he made in front of the camera to get sympathy?? Unless Scott said something incredibly upsetting to him!!

The picture here just looks so fake, so self-indulgent, a bit tacky somehow.

The only thing I liked about this photo is you captured the softness of fur he is wearing!

Good photography captures the essence of the subject and I would say that it achieves this goal superbly. The proof of this success rests in the commentary. I will add however that a sarorialist is fashionable without respect to labels or cash flow. A sartorialist is an artist. Mr. West is a consumerist with an unlimited amount of cash. Too easy to look good. Besides he really is a douchebag!

Everyone seems to be hating on kanye for his arrogance. and that he has. plus it seems to come through in this pic.
But he also comes through as a lot less confident in a lot of interviews…somewhat shy. i think he has a lot to offer as an artist and he really believes in making his art better.

I dislike this (gorgeous) fur coat worn with a white undershirt. All wrong.

I don't find this to be among your finest photos but, boy did it stir everyone up. So silly to be caught up in a pop star's life to this extent if you are over the age of sixteen. Even the long apologetic is over the top.

This world is victimized into believing what they are told to like and what they are told to wear from media and fashion 'trend setters' – Sad.
Again Scott , the fact that you even give people like this recognition by doing something as simple as taking their photo because you think its 'cool' that you were around individuals like this is pathetic. Stick to the gentleman in the photo beneath types.

He has been shooting Kanye for a long time, I appreciate that he does it cause Kanye is an influence for me, no matter the things that pick take from something happen at a music award show that just gave the young lady more exposure in my opinion, I in no way condone what he did, but I believe he was honestly sorry when he said it on the Jay Leno show, It goes back to a saying I have pick up "if you apologize, the people don't think you are sorry enough, but if you don't apologize then they will say you are truely heartless."

People here are taking Kanye's antics way too seriously. I think more of it is linked to his statements after Hurricane Katrina (and still maintaining a fan base) than being rude to Taylor Swift.

This is not the first portrait to appear here, or the first to feature someone because of his or her status as a style icon rather than their sartiorial choices of the moment. People are looking for reasons to object to this picture.

Kanye is the definition of edgy – in his music, style, and public persona. I appreciate that being recognized.

Dearest Sartorialist Readers. Why are you all so judge full and look at the picture as Kanyes style? He is another man amongst the others, another shot of individuals style. The picture has nothing to do with the popularity or personality (positive/negative) of the man. So leave all prejudice behind and consider the individuals style as a part of personal expression.

(Goodness gracious, what a stir!) Your photograph made me catch my breath. There's a story in that face, to be sure. His eyes, the set of his jaw, the tilt of his head, the angle of his collar – there are so many details to observe in this small portrait. You're giving my imagination a good workout with this one!

I can't believe a few people stooped so low as to say that the negative comments are even remotely based in racism. Are you people insane? Be careful where you wield words like that! That is not a small accusation! However, it is a weak one.

Scott, I loved what you wrote today in regard to this photo. I felt like I sort of understood why you posted this at the time (although I had a knee-jerk negative reaction like most) but your writings today confirmed it. I appreciate that you are observing him NOT as a perfect sartorialist, but as someone struggling with his style (and life).

And this is certainly a very beautiful photo. I just think the core of what I and others were trying to say is stated by one commenter: "Your beautiful photographs of non celebrities is (sic) what distinguishes your work from all the rest."
    Thanks for your beautiful work.

Just the fact that this photo has more comments than almost every photo on this page shows that Kanye is a magnetic figure. He has been the most influential style icon of the last decade, and that really cannot be argued. Hate him or love him, he speaks from his heart and his music inspires people all over the world. When was the last time somebody REALLY stood up for art like he did at the VMAs? What he has accomplished so far in his short career is indicative of the great things that we've yet to see come from him.

My God, haven't any of you ever gone through a hard time in your life? Have you never done anything you regretted? People do stupid things and make mistakes, but there's no reason to keep kicking this man while he's down. He's clearly trying to work through whatever his issues are. Yes, he's acted like an ass. But have a bit of empathy and let the man try to move on to being a better person.
Scott, as a picture of man and not a celebrity, this is beautiful.

As an advertising major, I must ask, did anyone think about the VMA's being a publicity stunt or that Kanye was a little tipsy (though that is no excuse) or that maybe, it was so ridiculous it was a little funny?

Kanye struggles. Kanye trips. Kanye is nouveau riche. Kanye wears fur. Kanye knows what it's like to be a black man in America. Kanye is not perfect. Kanye likes fashion. I like Kanye.

    January 28, 2010 at 12:11 pm

Right. There's been a lot of, um, harsh comments about this guy, but I have to say. Fur is oh-so sumptuous and the ultimate luxury, no?

Espesh if it is not extinguishing a species, what better way to honor its life than by wearing it? Otherwise, it would decompose and be returned to dust, not being able to be admired or appreciated.

Kanye shouldn't have stolen the Cowgirl's thunder. Whatever. Beyonce is better, but he shouldn't have done it.

He may be controversial, but he keeps people talking and from becoming stagnant.

The fact remains: He is an exceptional artist and fur rocks.

Out of all the comments (yes, I read them all) only two or three even knew that Scott had taken photos of Kanye West before. I'm guessing you either forgot West was featured in his book or chose to mentally block it out of your minds and focus on who he is as a person instead.

Mr. West detracting from this blog? Seriously? The role of a photographer is about capturing what speaks to them, regardless of who it is. Photography is more to do with the moment and less to do with the subject. I mean, that’s what people relate to in photographs, right? It’s about emotions and not just about the people or the places or the things separately; it’s the entire package. That’s what I personally take away from this blog.

How does one really judge Kanye over, say, others that have been photographed on this website? Because when one thinks about it in terms of who they are, you can only speculate/imagine the situation without actually knowing a thing about them. That’s when opinions are based on what we see beyond the photograph becomes apparent. I’m not sure when people decided that a photograph would then become a judgment call, but I think it’s because people aren’t separating a persona (and opinion, not facts) from the clothes/style/photograph.

I know that art, in and of itself, is entirely subjective. But I also think that most people who’ve commented are missing the point entirely. Yes, fashion goes beyond that of clothes that look good on a person, and yes, Kanye West might not have the same kind of style and/or wardrobe as some others captured on the blog, but in all honesty, I think you can hardly judge a man for that. I think style says a lot about a person and I can see how it speaks volumes of Mr. West. He stays true to who he is, and maybe it is a little bit more extravagant and not as “sophisticated” taste than well, apparently some who’ve commented, but I have never thought the clothes were wearing him. There’s a mix of a fresh urban/classic vibe he gives off and as a person (myself) who goes with different “looks” on a daily basis, what’s so wrong with that? As long as he’s being true to himself, I think that’s all that matters. Judgements are being made too quickly nowadays and people are categorized based on fleeting thoughts and fickle audiences. And I don’t think this blog is where that kind of mentality should occur…or is necessary.

And anyway, on a less serious note, Taylor Swift should be thanking Kanye for making 2009 the best year of her life! ha

Not sure why but Kanye's actions have no impact on me whatsoever. Whether calculated or desperate, his choices are his own. And his internal self is as much a mystery as that of any of Scott's other subjects. I'm open to this photo. As the photographer put it, it captures a moment in a continuum. I love good portraits because they evoke so much and leave so much unknown. The fur's a bummer but not surprising. It's Kanye! For it's humanity, it's mystery, the flap surrounding him, the gross fur and very warm complexion, and my optimistic curiosity, this phtograph's got my attention. He's a classic bad boy. Does every subject have to be utterly likeable? Boh-ring.

    There it is!

Never seen so many negative comments in all of the years of returning to this site, of course I don't read every picture's comment section, just those pics that are interesting . The comments show how the readership has truly changed, because I can recall seeing Kanye at least 3-4 times on your blog, these "hate parade" participants don't even realized they have generated at least 300 comments, which is above average!
As far as fur goes, could care less, could be Faux for me and men in fur is not my thing, but neither are stirrups!! Everything is not for everyone.
I have a soft spot for Kanye, so much so that I asked Mr. Scott S to sign my Kanye page at his book signing, Love it!
Bottom line, Kanye does alot I don't agree with, can be overly confident, and some say very rude. He could be more humble, but not to the point of overwhelming insecurity- as some of the paraders would prefer.

I have to laugh at the degree to which I am out of the pop culture loop. I have no idea why/what/how Mr. West has gained such a bad reputation among people who probably never met him.

I do know however, that Paris is cold this time of year, and the coat depicted is, therefore, appropriate gear.

I can also tell from this photo of Mr. West that he has great personal style, and is wonderful to look at, therefore, an appropriate subject for this blog.

What I can't tell from any photo on this blog is the character of any given photo subject.

    Two comments:

    1) I think it is interesting to see how many people are so quick to judge one man's person. Aren't we all faulty in some way? Haven't we all done something completely stupid and immediately regretted whatever it is we did? Granted, Kanye West's actions were done with millions of people watching, and thus had a greater culpability because of his influence over so many people. But we are all capable of wrongdoings, and before you go bashing someone, search yourself and check to make sure you are perfect in every way. Otherwise, judge his actions (We should judge a person's actions and not the person, since every person, in essence, is a good person) as stupid (which they were) and move on. Taylor Swift certainly has.

    2) The picture is fantastic. Kanye has good style.

I have been a big fan of your blog for about three years now. Many of your posts have inspired my personal style and I feel that the discussion regarding this image reveals how your photographs are both internally and externally inspirational. I think that the discussion raised by your photograph of Kanye, which I really admire, can be viewed not as a debate but as a conversation. I think that the readers who feel that Kanye is all superficiality and fame should try to view his inclusion on this blog from a different point of view. Also, I find the many statements declaring fur as unacceptable on men to be very shocking and close-minded. Example: did men not rock ushankas for centuries? "Men can't wear fur" sounds just as ridiculous as "women can't wear…"

Thanks Scott! I really love your blog.

I am quite surprised at how many people consider fur on a man to be an unequivocable NO. Broadway Joe Namath (another icon) proved that a man with the right sort of ego/stature can pull off this look (over a Jets uniform, no less). There are no rules.

it's amazing that people are criticized for "hating" kanye. if people have a negative opinion of him, then let it be, and allow them the right to express themselves, especially when the man is wearing what may be extremely expensive (animal) fur. kanye has publicly projected true arrogance, and what right does he have to do this without criticism? he may make music (like a lot of other people) but his music isn't primarily saving lives. so he may be having a bad time, hey, we all have bad times, but perhaps he should do so quietly and without drawing attention to himself. otherwise, allow the critics their say. a lesson learned to all those american dreamers. it doesn't hurt to be humble and kind.

With 337 comments so far, this is definitely one of your most provocative photographs.
The portrait is engaging …vulnerable, painful yet soft (lighting, texture, color). It takes balls to wear fur.

i like what you captured in his eyes: sincere emotion and thought that I don't usually see from mr. west

why should somebody not make a style blog because they are egotistical? this picture, along with all of scott's archive, captures a look and the feeling encompassing it. seeing as we don't know the personalities of other figures in this blog, we need to judge the picture like we do the rest-by its artistic expression.
    great photo.

Wow! It is surprising to see so much self righteousness and elitism in reaction to this portrait. It’s interesting to see how people believe they know a public personality to the point of judging character by alluding to one action. And it’s frankly funny to read the self-perceived stylish indignant at the sight of a “nouveau riche” intruder in their virtual house of worship.

Like it or not, Kanye West is an extremely gifted musician, and a cultural icon who's made an indelible impression on the style our time. Questioning his creativity and relevance is outright ridiculous.

This is a great shot. While I agree I on the fur comments from everyone, I do want to echo the points of some of the posters that points out what Scott has masterfully captured in this shot; the (what seems to be) sadness and vulnerability of a great young mind with too much pressure.

This is truly one of the non sartorial shots posted by Scott.

    This is a classic.

I just want to say that even though Kanye West has become a controversial figure, he is still a great fashion figure. Not to mention, we shouldn't judge someone we don't know and have never met, whereas Scott who has, deserves the right to choose whatever he wants on his blog. All opinions are different so there is no doubt that you will won't love every single thing he publishes. It is unjustified to criticise this specific post because of what you have read about Kanye from tabloids.

i dont know why people are having such a hard time excepting the fact that this is a beutiful portrait of kanye west, i think there is always a double standard when it comes to celebrities, kanye is a human being just like you and me and we all make mistakes and we are not considering the added on pressure he has to endure while still trying to finding himself

To the people who say Scott is "better than this" – this is his shot and it's his decision to put it on his site. He can't be better or worse than what is elementally his.

I happen to love seeing this shot of Kanye. It's different from normal Sartorialist fare but it's a great shot and knowing the situation behind it makes it all the more interesting. Kayne is all about contradiction – his music explores dichotomies relating to fame, wealth and yes, fashion. So the sadness in his eyes juxtaposed with the plush fur coat should speak volumes to those who are paying attention.

great photo, it is discretely smaller than most. kanye looks a little tired maybe from all the hate that people send his way. i don't particularly think that the look of exhaustion can be simulated. without the baggage of the celebrity the photo is solid, the cropping is great…but with everything else taken into consideration the photo is 375 times more interesting

…c'mon all you haters – this is a great portrait – very naive of people to think that someone who is so well known does not deserve a photograph, it's not about like or dislike – look at all the 'air time' politicians get! artists and photographers have always photographed and covered a wide range of humanity. To expect to see only people you LIKE, when you don;t know any of them is a ridiculous concept. Abusive messages to scott schumann about your expectations of his site are pretty egotistical in themselves!

What all of you opposers do not understand is that by dedicating multi-paragraph responses to your hatred of this person, this HUMAN being, you are probably making him quite happy, as he seems to thrive on the attention. But don't we all thrive on attention? Even the most introverted of us must be able to admit that some attention feels pretty nice…as for Kanye, I respect him as a talented artist, he really is talented. At least his style is an accurate expression of his personality. Yes, he might be a little snobby but I still love him :)

This is a style blog, not a popularity contest. I think it's a fantastic shot. The fur, the chain, the scar on the nose, the sad eyes–this shot shows us a rare glimpse into the human behind the clothes, and I happen to think it's the most profound I've ever seen on this blog. We all have our underbellies and have made our mistakes. Some of us express our shadows in a "bigger" way than others, as was the case with Kanye. He is a talented man going through a tough time, and he does so with style.

Imagine for a moment that you don't know the name or public persona of this person…. You could focus on the the quality of the portrait and the raw humanity captured. It's an amazing photograph. But Kanye West is a provocateur for better or worse and so the portrait is inseparable from the persona. Wait 30 years. Few will remember who he was or what he did and it will stand on its own.

im going to say that im indifferent about kanye because im indifferent to celebs in general… but i do admit (dont shoot me here!!) that I find throughout the years Louis Vuitton is getting more and more boring, tacky and too commercial. Too much of a "hype" "bling bling" "famous people" brand. I find Dior has been going down that path too… in a nutshell Louis Vuitton has become a sell-out for me!!! Even though from a marketing point of view what they're doing is probably good for the business but I cant stand it. Brand should learn how to keep their integrity!! As an isolated photo, but we cannot remove ourselves from the fact that we all know who this person is and what he is representing, that is at the end of the day what a portrait should capture. Regardless of people's opinion of Kanye, he sure commands the public's attention. Look at how many people commented here – mostly under "anonymous". That is the meaning of the word celebrity. That is the power of Kanye West. The ability to be singular, to stand out, to make a statement – regardless of whether in a positive or negative way. Sometimes, in the world in which we live, that's all that counts.

I think it's interesting that everybody has jumped on Kanye for purportedly being a terrible human being, & think that they have the right to tell you what to post & what not to post on your blog. Honestly? You're the artist, so they can all go * themselves.

I think it's a wonderful photo- very Richard Avedon capturing Marilyn Monroe (and if we want to talk about photographers taking pictures of 'evil' celebrities, Avedon photographed Sinatra, for God's sake). And you know what? I usually really don't like your blog at all. So there it is- the other camp is happy.

This is also just another example of one of my favorite phenomena on the internet: commenters who think their opinions matter & will change something. Don't read it, if you hate it so much.

None of us here probably has ever met Kanye West, but yet most of you hates the guy, for what? For speaking his mind and saying what he feels, and for dressing how he feels. i feel as if the fur coat is a sort of armour a barrier between kanye and the world that is judging him for his mistakes
i admire kanye's talent though for being one of the few decent rappers out there with a decent voice

This blog is and always will be a destination for high fashion, but Kanye is not high fashion rather very trendy. I think Kanye is a great artist but not an icon in the ever changing fashion world. Like his brand that never reached public eye, I believe his ideas of being trendy and not stylish will die off and true style will bloom.

I think and belive that it would be a much better statement had he been wearing fake fur. I can not see any good reason why one should wear fur. Why you would pay for sonething that has been killed just so that it can look good. I would love it if 'stars' would show much more concern and selfreflectens. That would have been something to respekt.

Why does everyone care so much about the fact that it is Kanye? This shot almost seems a little mocking to me. A classic example of what not to wear. This shot could potentially help mankind; now, no sane person who clicks through the Sartorialist will ever wear this type of fur coat. Just a personal comment on Kanye, not on Mr. Schuman: Fur? Really? You don't like in Alaska. You aren't half Eskimo. And fur doesn't like t-shirts.

He look so sad in this photograph.

I believe that when you look good you feel good. Sometime when I'm feeling glum, I'll put on my favorite pair or shoes, or step out in a pretty dress and instantly there's a shine in my eye and my chin is a little higher.

Perhaps Kanye uses this same strategy and overcompensated with a over-the-top fur coat in hopes of lifting his mood.

I didn't work though. He still looks so sad.

It's unbelievable to me how people can be so passionate while at the same time being utterly close-minded and judgmental. Kanye West is undeniably fashion forward and sartorially minded. He worked with Luis Vuitton for goodness sakes. Yes, sometimes he's an arrogant, materialistic, nouveau riche a**hole, but he is always vulnerable and honest and extremely talented. He is an artist. The prolificity of this comment thread itself is a testament to his controversial nature and subsequent fame. He loves the hate. ps, excellent photo, impeccably luxurious fur.

I've always defended Kanye because he is immensely talented and is often misunderstood. But this last PETA rant just confirms for me how stupid and ignorant he is. Time and time again, this fool says moronic things.

He should not be featured on this site if being "fresh to death" and "killing people with his freshness" because he's a "rock star" is all fashion is to him. I will honestly boycott this blog if I ever see anything Kanye related again.

Fur looks great. Kanye has a great fashion sense. But fashion if animal suffering is simply dismissed or ego is left to run rampant then fashion then becomes something disgusting and shallow regardless of how great it appears on the surface.

Have some decency and humility for humanity's sake.

I highly doubt the people commenting on this blog know many of the subjects Scott photographs…

Who's to say the rest of them are/aren't "douchebags," etc… (fill in your own un-original insult).

If you are bothered by the "manipulative" element of the emotion in the photograph, I have to ask: when is photography real, and not manipulative to some degree?

Lovely shot, I love the portrait approach. I like the fur paired with a white tee, and though I don't see many men pull it off well, I do live in Memphis, TN…

I like the hardness in his eyes and his jaw, and the worry-lines on his forehead. Those are pretty impossible to fake. I like how those aspects of his face contrast with the lush decadence of the fur. A very human shot of someone we are used to seeing in only one type of light.

Everyone here talking bad about Kanye are just self conscious low life losers who wish to have half his talent and style. He is cool and proves it by not caring about what freaks like all of you say about him. The reality is that once all is past, Kanye will go down in history for more possitives than negatives – but of course the negatives will be mentioned. People fall down no matter who they are. Sometimes we fall hard, and sometimes in public. Last thing we need is for peopel to be throwing stones at us when we are down. Nice shot Scott, keep up the good work. FB

I am not principally against fur on men, it is completely a matter of context. If you are sporting fur to show off it is obnoxious, which is undoubtedly the case with rappers throwing a fur coat on top of a tank top.

As for Kanye, I do not share the hostility towards his person, simply because I do not know him personally. As for his style, I find it mostly tacky and I cannot really see the justification of this picture on a sartorial blog except, of course, that it is Kanye. However, what I like about this blog is just the opposite of that.

i fail to see what people's opinions of kanye or fur have to do with this.
this blog is about style and style is not about wearing what is trendy at the moment or even appropriate, it is much more difficult to pin down than that.
whether you would personally wear what kanye does is irrelevant, he has style.
and i am doubtful as to whether any of the comments saying kanye is arrogant/rude/etc etc actually know kanye. what people present to others (especially the media) is not always who they really are.

    January 31, 2010 at 7:27 pm

kanye aside, fur on a man is only done well in moderation. a full fur coat is a bit much.

the clothes don't make the man but in kanye's case, he's trying too hard where the clothes start to wear him and it's just unnatural.

Please do put things in perspective people…

Lapo Elkann and his family have been living on the fruits of honest auto workers for years.

Kanye simply took a mic from Taylor Swift and with that propelled her and her craft even further into the limelight.

Now who's to judge good and bad?

Hmmmmmmmmm! How many workers lost their jobs because of Mr. West action?

Is it not enough that the very thing he craved/craves-attention- has made him have to take an hiatus from an attention driven career?

Interesting. Seems many of those commenting have never read The Satorialist's mission statement. It's not fashion gossip. It's pho-tog-ra-phy. Stunning picture! Love the way you captured the skin tone and the soft fur framing his face. You really captured something deep in his eyes. That made the shot in my opinion. Not many seem to be able to capture African Americans very well. Good job. Great blog!

I think there are a few things are ruining this photo for me. First of all, Kanye West is kind of a jerk, and we all know it. That's the problem with celebrities, they are a subject that has already been examined.

On the other hand, the anonymous and sometimes oft appearing others on your website I do not know and it makes it much simpler to judge their outfit and their look. Kanye, on the other hand, I already know. I know he is rich, low class, and is aspiring to make waves in the fashion world by wearing matching fur coats with his ex-stripper girlfriend.

His celebrity, his personality, his vulgarity, destroy this photo for me. When this photo was taken he was probably thinking 'How can I disrupt the Grammy's and get more people to talk about me than did after the Taylor Swift debacle?'

So much controversy over one portrait! I said it before and I'll say it again. This is a beautiful portrait of Kanye. He is showing a bit of attitude, but mostly extremely soulful eyes and a flawless face. The fur frames his features just right and the contrast of the simple white t shirt look underneath is the perfect foil for the fur. Outstanding portrait!

Funny, these comments are almost identicle to comments that were expressed about Madonna in the 80's with the exclusion of "slut". Kanye is an artist, and part of an artists job is to openly and freely express themselves (as we all should but rarely do), and he has…in an amazingly flawed way. So be it. But he's got you "feeling" something good or bad…which is another aspect of an artists job. Hopefully, the negative energy and hate you've expressed here will free you to also see the positive aspects of this picture. It IS an honest shot of a complex man. That is all.

To all you Kanye haters, since when is obnoxiousness something to be frowned upon in your fickle world of fa-shun? Most of you style-dictators are insufferable at a dinner table during any lame fashion week, laughing at lesser mortals for wearing Moncler with D&G shades.

And how dare some of you accuse this man of not being creative?
Have you even heard The College Dropout? Or Late Registration?
You probably only have 3 cds on your shelf. Most likely a Hed Kandi comp, a Buddha bar one and something by Coldplay.

And as a sartorialist, this guy started making tacky ghetto thugs get a little more interested in designer labels which didn´t make you look like an infant, AND he had the balls to speak in defence of gay people in the ever so homophobic world of hip hop.

Scott, I apologise for using your blog as a conduct to vent my spleen, but I just hate it when some of these so called fashionistas lash out at a guy from the safety of anonimity just because he has an ego trip and wears fur.

And if everyone is so appalled by a guy for being rude to some American Sweetheart on live tv, just mark my words when in 5 years time the general consensus will be that Kanye is the last punk rocker ever to come out of the plastic phoney music world the industry´s turned into. If Cobain would´ve done it, he would´ve sold 10 million more records.

    Nuff said.

And if anyone wishes to respond personally…

Kayne West is not an icon. He's already a flaming has-been. Maybe he can exploit his mother's tragic death like Madonna perennially does when she needs attention and Vogue will call it "high art"

Perhaps it will spark a resurgence of interest. His clothing choices are tacky.

It's a shame everyone's busting your balls for posting a picture of a Kanye. He does have his place in the fashion world- a good sense of personal style; don't see many other r&b/rap artists dressed like him. Not a fan of the fur, either, but apparently he is… there's the "personal style". We're not judging his character, which, I admit, seems to be lacking, this is a FASHION blog.

WOW. I can't believe how much ignorance can be captured on one post, it's amazing. This shot says a lot! Forget about the fur and forget about Kanye. Focus on the shot… It's perfect! HONESTY…

For the record.. I'm a huge fan of KanYe in spite of his music, passion AND fashion eye. In fact, apart from this blog, KanYe is my biggest fashion inspiration.. But that's beside the point, because regardless of my personal opinion of the man, what I see in this stunning photo is great style despite (possibly IN spite) a tortured soul.. And THAT is a true sartorialist spirit.

The man must being doing something right cause he brings out the haters in droves. I like the shot and I like Kanye. His music is bomb, he's a truth teller and folks just aren't used to celebs who aren't handled by PR puppet strings…

Love the photo. Don't really follow pop culture so believe it or not I have no idea who he is or what he does, though I've heard his name a million times. Now, thanks to you I know what he looks like, from your point of view at least.

I like how you stay true to yourself, Sartorialist. You captured a moment and published it, despite its risks in the court of public opinion.

This arresting portrait tells me that Mr. West is learning a difficult lesson right now. Let's hope he comes out the other side a better man.

    Good shot. Sick style.

Kanye always dresses well. He has a wide range of styles and knows how to adjust them to fit him.

From a pair of Air Yeezys to his Louis, or a BAPE sweater to a Jil Sander dress shirt. He knows how to work it all. I always hunt his style to try and pick something up.

All the people knocking him need to settle down. He has explained his reasons for being "arrogant" many many times. He was making great music, rocking great style, designing great pieces. He was doing great and everyone was just waiting to drag him down and the T. Swift incident was a perfect opportunity. No need to suddenly be anti-conformist and hate on him all of a sudden. Especially

You all are simply jealous idiots.

He must have fans, seeing he was invited to sit font row and VIP at each and every major fashion show.

And ps, ironically the vast majority of people you see in fashion, the ones you all drool over (i.e, the ones we see sashaying around Paris and New York in $4,000 Christian Louboutin or $10,000 Tom Ford loafers) are all arrogant and have huge egos.

You don't think Karl Lagerfeld is arrogant? LMAO, fools.

I think this is a fascinating potrait due to it's poignancy and intensity. I believe you captured what you set out to achieve in this photograph. What irritates me is how too many comments are shallowly centred around the styling or personal life of kanye. Although clearly your blog is partly style focused; what sets your blog apart from the bizzillion others out there is the sheer depth, complexity of ideas and analysing of images and ideas beyond their obvious physicalities. You interpret the subtleties.
This potrait accurately illustrates the dramatic effect of an alive meaningful face against an equally meaningful prop against a still white background.
However what really stood out to me in this portrait was the symmetrical component. Kanye's right side of face is rather indifferent, kind of dead or drained in the eyes..pained. However his left side is completely different, it is so tense, rigid and rather elicits weak anger. Interesting.
This is my first time on your blog and I am already addicted!
I'm 20 and completely in love with design and fashion, but I have found myself in a bit of ditch..not sure what road to take in my life. But your blog has definately helped reignite my passion!

    i love it actually
Kanye is his own brand of superstar.
Music/movie stars used to all carry a theatrical arrogance that was acceptable..even expected of them.
What's with looking to them now to be pseudo-modest and role-model-y.
I think he does what he does very well (be it music or dress) and he knows it.
    great portrait Sart

Wow. It's incredible how dividing Kanye is!
There's no denying the fact that he can come across as an arrogant douche but at the same time he's on a different creative planet to most. Wether it be music, fashion or art.
Great shot Scott. I love the contrast between the austerity of fur and Kanye's vulnerability.

Gosh, some (most) of these comments are just nasty!

What is it about Kanye which riles you all so? I notice a few people proclaiming him 'nouveau riche' which I think reveals a certain snobbery. Does it perhaps offend you all that he's a bit… different?

But whatever. People who've been reading this blog for a while will know that Scott often shoots Kanye, and so he should; Kanye, love him or hate him, is a passionate man and an opinion former. And this is a great shot.

I think this photo is extremely appropriate for the Sartorialist… I often cite kanye west to friends as a pioneer in hip hop dressing – one of the reasons that rappers now wear suits that fit instead of those ridiculously oversized and tacky looking suits of the past! Bravo.

I like Kanye, and I like this picture. Had this been anyone else, no one would have been so awful. How do you know if anyone else whose picture is on here is a nice person? Look past the subject, and appreciate the photography.
I'm not a fur fan, but his eyes look genuine and open.. perhaps it's false, but it's successful.

Not a fan or follower of Pop Culture however,
I like Kanye, despite the VMA and Katrina incidents. There is an honesty to him that is lacking in the majority of 'celebrities' today.

Great image. I have not seen this look in Kanye's eyes before. Maybe others have, but something rare was captured here (again).

Kanye reminds me of the Frank Lloyd Wright quote: "I choose honest arrogance over false humility."

Thank you so much for being the visionary that you are. It takes a very concise vision to lead a group and have clearly delineated focus, especially when attempting to toe the line where style and art meet. Kanye is an interesting character full of life with all its pros and cons. What I love most about him is that he allows himself to be human(flawed) in the public eye. What I love most about you is that you will not allow popular opinion to distract you from capturing the essence of the sartorialist.. Its a spirit that lives within. Thank you for staying true to the spirit of sartorialism.

It’s a great shot with good lighting. In life I want to follow my own voice, free of crowd influence – so I’m not going to knock Kanya, or anyone for doing that. I may not always agree, but it’s better than smothering individuality or trying to force or define someone else’s path (especially since I don’t like it when it’s done to me.) Thanks for all the effort you put into this blog. I really enjoy your images.

This man IS a sartorialist! He is calculating and purposeful in his choices. Some work, some don’t, but he dares to make those choices. As for his personality, who gives a fuck! What has that got to do with a FASHION STYLE BLOG? Are you asking what we think of him or if he looks good in his clothes? If I met half of these naysayers, I imagine I wouldn’t like them either! STICK TO THE FASHION CRITIQUES AND LEAVE THE POLITICS AT THE DOOR.
Fashion is arrogance and humility, elitism and community, highbrow and street level, genuine and faux, classy and trashy, all of the above and none of it at all, that is if you reinvent and find your own way.
I see a very attractive man wearing a gorgeous coat that matches his skin tone perfectly. The look in his eye is confident and assured. The photo is great!
    Thanks for including it Scott.

Scrolling back to this post, I read the comments and agree the notion of a lack of identity and any actual taste with Kanye West. Mr West is a trend in himself, he has no grounding, no identity and clearly tries to promote these very unflattering garments in a very gentlemanly/ sartorial-like way which just does not work, what goes around comes around, there’s no originality to his garments that balance with his self acclaim. It’s people like Mr West with a ‘doing (or in this case, designing) something just for the sake of doing it’ mindset that I believe is stopping young designers who have worked (and I mean done actual worked) to receive their university qualifications in the fashion and art/design industry from getting the recognition they deserve. If it wasn’t for his fame and ‘status’ I highly doubt he would receive the attention and acclaim for his ‘style’ (lack of) in the way he does today.

But hey, you can’t please everyone.
