On the Street…Left Bank, Paris

What a wonderful character.

I shot this gentleman about 8 years ago, he only seems to get better with age!

He is fierce. The undone cuffs, wild hair and ferocious stare suggest an unconventional intellect. He dresses with verve and style. Bravo.

He does look fantastic, really very simple but the overall effect is striking. As a fountain pen collector, I also notice the pen he’s using, that’s nice to see!

I wish I could see him from the front to see how he is pulling off wearing what seems to be a tie, a scarf AND a neckerchief. Now that’s style.

Scott, do you have any idea as to the story behind this man? He looks like someone who’s seen a lot and learned even more.

Hi Phyl, he is an artist – a painter. He made some paintings and sketches. It happened that I am living in the area where I most of the time seen him in Paris, left bank around Eglise St Germain des Pres.

A man that appreciates the finer detail in the use of a fountain pen. This totally completes not only the look but gives one an understanding of the essence of his character.

Unbelievable. I’ve been an almost daily reader here since 2005, and this is without a doubt my favorite subject of yours, Scott. He looks like a character from a Moebius comic. So damn stylish. The hair, the unbuttoned cuffs, that long tie, the pen. Everything is perfect and unique. Serious inspiration for me in 20 years. Is your previous shot of him on the blog, and if so, could you share the link?

He is fabulous and reminds me of the romantic illustrations of 19th century
writers in my “Authors” card game when I was a kid.

This is the first time in 10 years of following this blog that I comment. I know this gentleman. Or rather *know* him. I used to always see him by the Pont des Arts or by Pont Neuf in the 6th arrondissement. Painting or selling his art or other artwork.

I am West African and you don’t see many dark Asian or African faces in this part of the Left Bank. Paris is wonderfully diverse, but my “hood” in St. Germain des Pres was rather monoracial. I always noticed this man, and he always noticed me and waved hello. He always seemed to be deep in contemplation, but he is one of my favorite characters from when I lived in Paris.

I used to feel so self-conscious about my race — not bad, but just very visible, like I stuck out everywhere and was easily recognized… Now that I see this man, I’m going to pretend that I was one of those minor celebrities on the Left Bank whom everyone recalled! Paris was sublime… Especially for a woman of color…

he looks like a dead ringer of painting of a composer or philosopher from the 1800′s. freud or nietzsche, beethovenish or tchaikovsky.
