The Dilemma of the White Turtleneck

I know it’s my own problem but I just can’t get with white turtlenecks.

They seem so medical uniform-y or athletic (like Under Armour)…

….Or they remind me of the Randy Quaid character in the Vacation movies.

Here Christopher Lemaire makes a white turtleneck look great, so I know it can actually happen but I just can’t see one on me.

I think it might just about work with a navy jacket but it’s a hard look to pull off

Well, I hadn’t thought of white turtlenecks before now but Lemaire, unsurprisingly, can make it look appealing. In my opinion, if it can be acceptable in the fashion experts’ ranks for women to wear long baggy sports shorts than surely, anything can be acceptable. / =

Me, too. But he looks good here. This is how I feel about black (or navy) pants and white or blue oxford shirts, too. It all feels uniform-ey.

Now I’ve read the ‘bandages’ comment i will default to that if I see them in future! Regarding the above photo, the model is a fabulous looking man and the clothes are beautiful in design and material.

We have the Lemari filter in because of all his creations we usually like. That white turtle neck is still a no.

This collar goes so high up on the neck it looks more like a neck brace then a typical turtleneck collar. Maybe this man forget to roll it down to the normal double thickness?

A white silk turtleneck under a a cashmere sweater for a late season round of golf is perfect.

I never could make a success of the turtleneck as a look however my cousin Jack always could with devastating effect, just as he could with anything he wore. Jack was a tall, lean, athletic, cut and defined athlete with a chiseled jaw and lean, strong neck. By comparison I resembled the uncle from The Addams Family in a turtleneck, blast the luck. It takes a certain genetic look coupled with athleticism to make a success of the turtleneck. Since my cousin was also a fantastic tennis player he was tan as well as fit. Rather akin to a woman benefiting from being a size 1 or 2 for a successful bare midriff look. A small percentage of the population are meant to wear either look.
I have however been perusing your many archived looks of men with scarves. Now those are for me!

Thank you Libbynan, you flatter me! There are people who have carried off the turtleneck with devastating effect: Audrey Hepburn, Ali McGraw, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, James Dean and Alain Delon. These are rarefied examples of such people who could wear anything and walk in barefoot as well yet simply ‘own’ the room! Curse the look, I wasn’t so gifted, lol. I must work at it, which is why we study magazines and The Sartoralist and vintage photos and films.

I’m not saying men or women are ‘better’ at sporting this style of turtleneck. IMO, women might own the rights to it. I could see it, with FANTASTIC jewelry. On men it ‘might’ look, a little Masterpiece Theater. Then again…it could give men a modern/futuristic vibe….which styled a certain way is captivating. Steve Jobs….the Icon of the (black) turtleneck. :) xo

I like turtlenecks.. but, the looser ones, like a cowl neck. This one looks too constricting. I think it would bother me.

Yea, it’s like under armour; I’d just opt for compression shirts and a casual shirt rather than a turtle neck. Good thing Black Friday sales are here. Those things are expensive.

A cream-color turtleneck works on women -with cream-color- pants, unless you’re a Rolling Stone. But a white turtleneck on men, no! Indeed, doctor, doctor!

Why should we look at any article of clothing as being universally flattering? A white turtleneck is tough to pull off–let it be for the few who can wear it with confidence.

I completely (but respectively) disagree! I think the white turtleneck looks fresh and modern. It’s basically the only thing I want to wear with everything!

Try to wear one underneath a white shirt or a strong blue denim shirt, all buttoned up…

white roll-neck is a fashion statement and if worn properly as in this photo, it projects confidence and cool. I’ve seen worse fashion statements on this blog by men, believe that!

Mr. Schuman: try an off white turtleneck. John Smedley makes a nice one in sea island cotton. Goes even nicely with a dinner suit….

Esquire magazine published an essay on the white turtleneck some years ago. I see it as a universal style option. I use it whenever i want to appear dressy in a cold or damp climate and want no fuss. The white turtleneck is clean and always look elegant with a navy blazer. Almost military in its proportions. It never fails to come across as elegant.
