Black always looks sharp. More of a fun of the look on the right but I can enjoy all of it.

i love her TOMs! and the whole look on both of them is very urban nomad.
August 13, 2009 at 11:05 am
God i miss to see New Yorkers
Mikki on the go
Ohh, this is so NYC!!!Cannot wait to dress up/down like this soon!
August 13, 2009 at 11:09 am
This outfit is too cool :D
August 13, 2009 at 11:10 am
Very serious – a stare which could kill.
Jorge from W Palm Beach
August 13, 2009 at 11:12 am
That's why black never goes out of favor, especially with the fashion crowd. You could pack these outfits in an overnight bag, and with enough underwear you could get outfits for perhaps a week! I wish they were happier-looking, but they are tremendously stylish and that's enough! Jorge from WPB
August 13, 2009 at 11:13 am
Ohhh Myy!!! That wonderful photo! The hat is very nice. !
August 13, 2009 at 11:15 am
Blacked out!… and rockin the Adidas high tops, very interesting…
August 13, 2009 at 11:17 am
Rather intense summer looks, no?
I love it all, except for the white socks on him.
But the lady is beautiful; her expression matches her clothes.
August 13, 2009 at 11:21 am
This is summer wear? I am somewhat perplexed.
wow. i'm blown away by this girl's coolness
August 13, 2009 at 11:22 am
New York, at last…
August 13, 2009 at 11:23 am
So chic, yet casual… I love my city and it's folks!
August 13, 2009 at 11:24 am
August 13, 2009 at 11:25 am
The girl with the umbrella. I love her look, and a drawing pad is the best accessory.
August 13, 2009 at 11:27 am
Chic. I'm especially loving the black TOMS, need to get myself a pair straight away. You definitely have a thing for the all black look. :P :D
August 13, 2009 at 11:41 am
this one was shot a few months ago then, because it's in British Vogue??
August 13, 2009 at 11:56 am
yyaaay she's wearing toms!!http://www.tomsshoes.com/
August 13, 2009 at 11:57 am
on a side note, the nylon tricot high-waist legging ad is very disturbing
August 13, 2009 at 11:59 am
How I long for the weather to permit wearing black again…
August 13, 2009 at 12:05 pm
I now think of Toms in a whole different way. Plus the topshop bag… it is nice seeing a fun bag every once in a while :)overall, these are both so fun
August 13, 2009 at 12:10 pm
I love the sheer skirt and flats – impeccable casual-chic!
August 13, 2009 at 12:15 pm
The hat and leather jacket are to die for! I also love the girl on the right's shades!
August 13, 2009 at 12:19 pm
God I love New York
August 13, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Great shot. The long black ballet skirt with footless tights, flats, & black leather jacket really works because she's tall, slim, pretty, and has great attitude. They both look like they don't take themselves, or fashion, too seriously, and are having fun with it, which to me is the essence of good style.
I've noticed (& have been posting since the spring) that on London streets, black is the new black and it's carried thru the summer.
I don't care when you shot it: I predict that black (along with grey) will be a summer classic. Not that it will ever knock white out completely, but it's a close contender.

This is officialy my favorate fashion photo…. those chicks rock! CS
August 13, 2009 at 12:42 pm
The outfit and style of the girl on the right is absolutely brilliant. Ethical, perfect mix of masculine and feminine, so classic in matching shades of black. Love it!!!
August 13, 2009 at 12:43 pm
For the rainy grey summer we've had, I'm enjoying the black layers–and white "pops" make a welcome change from all the b/w patterns of last year. Interesting pieces, infinitely re-combined–they could trade parts for next week. But, yes, smile–you look plenty fierce already.
August 13, 2009 at 12:47 pm
Love the look on the right. Fab combination of leather jacket and whimsical skirt.
August 13, 2009 at 12:50 pm
always ironic how it's the photos from home that make me smile.
pass by it every day, but never take the time to pause and appreciate. :)
August 13, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Only in NYC.
Clearly I have different sweat glands then they do. This weather does not call for jackets and black all over. Yikes.
August 13, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I love his sunglasses and her flats. Fierce peeps.
August 13, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Nope. Black is Dressing for Beginners. Kidstuff.
August 13, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Dressed in black in the summer, yeah that's a New Yorker.
August 13, 2009 at 1:30 pm
new yorkers know their style well!
Hate the TOMS. Other than that they look awsome.
August 13, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Both of them look so hot and fierce, I agree 2 urban nomads!
August 13, 2009 at 1:47 pm
everything but the leggings. i hate long skirts and leggings. too frumpy for most to pull off.
August 13, 2009 at 1:56 pm
It does my heart glad to see someone wearing Toms…She has the style of my youngest daughter that I always admire how see utilizes her clothes…I love the brick street!!! The girls look like they simply belong there.
August 13, 2009 at 2:01 pm
nice pic! for me your NY pics are the best.
Way too hot in NYC to be wearing all black with leggings. Show some skin!
August 13, 2009 at 2:02 pm
isn't it summer?
August 13, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Was this a fashion shoot? Cause otherwise very overdressed for being on the street. Leather Jacket in August?
August 13, 2009 at 2:08 pm
THE GIRL ON THE RIGHT IS WEARING BLACK "ALPARGATAS". THATS THE WORD IN ARGENTINA, WHERE THESE SHOES COME FROM.
August 13, 2009 at 2:20 pm
God, I <3 NYC
nothing against the other cities on here, but the electricity is always almost tangible from THIS particular city.
it's not even just about the clothes, it's how they carry the clothes. GODDDDD i need to go back ASAP!!!
August 13, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Perfect as always – God bless New York…
August 13, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Artists-dressed-in-all-black-uniform looks clean and comfortable here.
Down to earth shoes. These young women could run fast if they wanted to.
August 13, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Oh sorry, I thought the person on the left was female(??).
HE can run fast in those shoes.
August 13, 2009 at 2:37 pm
I think I've seen it recently in September issue of Vogue UK. Great article, by the way. x
August 13, 2009 at 2:38 pm
TOMS shoes = amazing.
simple, ethical, comfortable, stylish.
August 13, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Her legs look way too skinny in leggins.
August 13, 2009 at 2:41 pm
black is one color that always looks chic and lovely. These ladies are stunning :)
August 13, 2009 at 2:43 pm
They look like a couple of modern ninjas. I bet you had to back away after this shot, or he would have sliced your head of with his umbrella-blad– they're that fierce.
August 13, 2009 at 3:05 pm
very new york. that's great.
August 13, 2009 at 3:19 pm
I bet they are superheroes in disguise.
August 13, 2009 at 3:24 pm
i was all over new york the past two months hoping to run into you and get snapped, but you weren't anywhere in sight! These girls look awesome though!!
<3 The Voguette
August 13, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Theres a Matrix feel to this. The girl on the right is yummy…
As for those "Toms" sneakers I wore them working on a ranch in Argentina, and they cost a dollar a pair…
Lip Gloss and Mane Toss
August 13, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Ode to rainy days in the city. If only everyone could dress like that…
August 13, 2009 at 4:15 pm
lovely and ethical (toms shoes)
August 13, 2009 at 4:36 pm
The girl is gorgeous!
August 13, 2009 at 4:54 pm
awesome! I love that she's wearing TOMS! they have some really cool styles other than that basic black on their site (www.TOMSshoes.com)! it's cool to see ppl on the street who also care about giving back.
August 13, 2009 at 4:58 pm
When you are wearing an almost all black outfit, 999 out of 1000 times it will look amazing. I dare the people to wear more colors. It's very hard to combine different colours. Imagine these girls wearing three completely different colours, they would look ugly. It's not always about the cloths, it's actually always about mixing colours.
August 13, 2009 at 4:59 pm
YAY Tom's!! YAY NYC!!
Monika and Cecily
August 13, 2009 at 5:18 pm
I LOVE the Toms! The umbrella is also such a great accessory.
Give it an edge
August 13, 2009 at 5:21 pm
the girl on the right pulls off this outfit perfectly, probably due to her height!
August 13, 2009 at 5:34 pm
what i'd like to know is when this photo was taken? it surely wasn't on Aug 13th with the boiling 1000 degrees we've had out here this week; no one in their right mind would ever wear this in August in nyc, would they? So just curious to know. They look mad cool though. Now if only I weren't sweating just by looking at them… ;)
August 13, 2009 at 5:57 pm
It's about the attitude here, the clothes just add a nice touch :)
August 13, 2009 at 5:59 pm
is she wearing TOMS? i love those shoes, they are soooo comfortable!
August 13, 2009 at 6:01 pm
He's got some Michael Jackson moves going on.
August 13, 2009 at 6:07 pm
they both look really cool!
August 13, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Very downtown chic!!
August 13, 2009 at 6:12 pm
so funky i love. art studentssss
August 13, 2009 at 6:14 pm
yea i think the one of the left is a skinny GUY. and no, you cant wear black and look good…look at the shades, the hat , the proportions..it is goood
August 13, 2009 at 6:20 pm
You just cannot go wrong with black, I like the legging layering on both!http://fashionpearlsofwisdom.blogspot.com/
August 13, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Awesome. Love the drawing pad. And the Tom's.
Black is best.
August 13, 2009 at 7:12 pm
is no one else a bit perplexed by the fact that it's very difficult to tell if the person on the left is male or female? That mystery has taken over my ability to analyze the rest of the picture.
August 13, 2009 at 7:17 pm
I would love live in New York, dress whatever I want. In Portugal people are so conservative and similiar…
August 13, 2009 at 7:19 pm
rockin the Tom's!
August 13, 2009 at 8:00 pm
They look like Heckel & Jeckel. Anyway, I am going into NYC on Sunday. I will wear my most sartorial outfit in hopes that you will photograph me.
August 13, 2009 at 8:26 pm
I'm so loving those TOMS. by far my favorite footwear I've seen on this blog, ever.
August 13, 2009 at 8:34 pm
LOVE the vibes emanating from the figure on the left. This is the kind of energy i aspire to communicate through my dress. ->COOL<- A product of the zeitgeist, an association of composure and self-control!
August 13, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Love the skirt on the right! but damn I am tired of the edgy angst expressions. what the hell is so wrong with looking like a pleasant person? sheesh. no need for the blue steel 24/7
August 13, 2009 at 9:18 pm
i love it!!he pulls off androdgeny and has a great hat. :)
August 13, 2009 at 9:20 pm
ooooh… they look like vampires.
August 13, 2009 at 9:27 pm
I do enjoy your paired dressers shots very much.
By the way, your book on Amazon has been postponed until August 26th – September 1st on Amazon. I just got the dreadful email this morning :(
August 13, 2009 at 9:59 pm

August 13, 2009 at 10:15 pm
August 13, 2009 at 10:30 pm
MEEP! Love the hat. Everything's oh-so-slick yet nonchalant.
August 13, 2009 at 10:45 pm
i love theirs style, they have awesome style!
August 13, 2009 at 11:17 pm
Who is she? She is wearing "alpargatas", those are typical from Argentina!!
Style & Beyond
August 13, 2009 at 11:26 pm
those toms shoes made the diff! so effortless!
August 13, 2009 at 11:33 pm
wicked pair, and amazing photo as usual.
August 13, 2009 at 11:41 pm
Love the TOMS! great shot
August 14, 2009 at 1:26 am
these women look stunning!
August 14, 2009 at 1:43 am
~male and female version of the other – very fierce look. it always fascinates me to see umbrella as a fashion accessory – it adds up some strange vibe.
August 14, 2009 at 3:42 am
its good information..
August 14, 2009 at 4:01 am
Black is back? No. Black was never away and it´s cool like always. The look and feel is singulary!
Blog it >>http://fashionmeetscologne.blogspot.com/
August 14, 2009 at 5:46 am
I am not so sure this photo was taken recently & perhaps Sartorialist, Scott can fill us in. The weather has been incredibly hot here. Also, to the right side is a person that is blurred but also dressed in black & he/she appears to have some sort of coat on as well. As for the look itself – they're kids with great imagination. Black is black & always complimentary to anyone.
August 14, 2009 at 6:18 am
August 14, 2009 at 6:49 am
very movie alike… uau… would dare to say very tarantino…
August 14, 2009 at 6:56 am
New Yorkers, very hip style!
August 14, 2009 at 7:28 am
the look like they have come straight from a sketch book….
August 14, 2009 at 7:59 am
Ah! I love this photo! There's something very stark and moody about it.
August 14, 2009 at 8:31 am
The one with the hat is trying too hard. Far too hard.
August 14, 2009 at 8:37 am
Great framing effect of the street and buildings, really emphasizes the black.
August 14, 2009 at 9:39 am
i'm growing kind of tired of these dark, slinky looks. it's imitated and pulled off by so many people that it's lost its novelty.
August 14, 2009 at 9:58 am
Great photo. But let's face it when there is sooooo much thought going into ones duds it just looks way to contrived. It's like they are almost going out looking for Scott so they can get snapped up. I am all about looking funky but not when you loose sleep the night before thinking about what you are going to put on the next day. Sorry yet again "I'm no havin it!!"
August 14, 2009 at 10:05 am
Ya no what I'M thinking a Bowler might have wooked better than the Straw. However she looks quite good.
August 14, 2009 at 10:49 am
is it a New Yorker thing? they seem to pull off anything. even the white socks with black shoes.
August 14, 2009 at 11:06 am
hidden in her notebook is a drawing of me as a statue. Atleast, I wish it were true; her stare is enough to turn us all into stone and I love it.
August 14, 2009 at 11:39 am
her outfit makes leggings look chic again!
August 14, 2009 at 12:05 pm
1st pic which i save from this blog's tons of pictures. coooool summer!
August 14, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Love shots like these but I also hope you continue posting photos of people who, as you said before, "just want to look nice" instead of screaming fashion with a capital F.
August 14, 2009 at 1:19 pm
August 14, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Just ordered myself a pair of black toms. Yay.
August 14, 2009 at 2:02 pm
That's a guy.
August 14, 2009 at 2:06 pm
i love seeing pictures of summer fashion: scarfs, pants, leather jackets, socks! it's 95, 62% humidity where i am sitting right now. high-waisted shorts and a loose tank are even too much. i would literally cook if i were wearing a bomber. over-heat in seconds if socks were involved. looking cool and staying cool is such a struggle. i envy these ladies.
August 14, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Hummmmm the left silhouette is very classy… i love it!
August 14, 2009 at 2:19 pm
What a great pair! Soho is still the best place on earth
August 14, 2009 at 3:29 pm
I have the shoes she is wearing
ohmygod I feel soooooo cool.
this is great.
August 14, 2009 at 3:53 pm
If the girl on the right isn't Parker Posey, she's a dead ringer.
August 14, 2009 at 4:24 pm
I can't stop looking at this! Very suave, very slick, and their expressions just top it off! Love it!
August 14, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Love her hat! Somewhere between a fedora and a sunhat.
August 14, 2009 at 4:34 pm
badass. the end.
absolutely wicked. i wonder where they were going.
August 14, 2009 at 4:35 pm
It's so great to see people wearing TOMS shoes!
August 14, 2009 at 5:01 pm
was this in british vogue? that article about you was amazing, i didn't know you & garance dore were together, haha. beautiful photo :)
August 14, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Although I like and am interested in the girl on the right's shear skirt paired with leggings, I do not particularly care for these two people and their style. For me, they are taking themselves and their clothes too seriously.
August 14, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Saw this in British Vogue.Who knew TOMs could be so stylish!
August 14, 2009 at 9:52 pm
How very NYC. Or what I would expect from NYC. Both need to gain some weight and learn to smile.
August 14, 2009 at 10:07 pm
August 15, 2009 at 12:52 am
They have to have a theme song! If only I knew it, I'd hum it all weekend…
August 15, 2009 at 2:50 am
love that the girl on the right hasn't got an 'it' bag
August 15, 2009 at 2:51 am
no 'it' bags here which is cool
August 15, 2009 at 5:00 am
Their expressions are scary in the best way.
August 15, 2009 at 8:46 am
Isn´t the one on the left a boy? Whatever. I hope the clothes feel comfortable, cause that´s all I can get out of this.
August 15, 2009 at 8:58 am
wow ! so cool
August 15, 2009 at 10:10 am
he is the perfect accessory for her kick ass kit
August 15, 2009 at 10:31 am
who are these girls i see them in a few photos??
August 15, 2009 at 10:33 am
The guy looks a bit like Coco Rocha.
August 15, 2009 at 10:37 am
Kids playing dressup. Not real stye, not yet. I'm sorry darlings, I'm not buying it.
August 15, 2009 at 10:57 am
nice, very cool of that guy's hat.

I'm sitting here in 100+ degree Austin weather wondering when I can dress like that girl on the right. I'm also impressed that she made Tom's shoes look so cool. Maybe I'll even go buy a pair at one of the many hippie stores in town later today.
August 15, 2009 at 2:01 pm
those tom shoes are really becoming something now!

I saw this picture in Vogue and I read the aticle.I would love to have the sence of confidence to find someone on the street and photograph them. Are some people really frightened when you approach them?
I love the way that the girl on the left is clutching onto an art block.
would you like to follow my blog and I will follow yours too!
Happy blogging Sarah

Is it the glasses that make the dude look so feminine? Kind of a work of art, in line with the sketchbook he is carrying.
August 15, 2009 at 5:21 pm
All the Black TOMS are sold out now.
August 15, 2009 at 5:50 pm
I love the girl in the leather jacket, very chic.
August 15, 2009 at 7:56 pm
Not my thing…
It's "try to hard"… not natural style as such in my humble opinion.
August 15, 2009 at 8:39 pm
LOVE THOSE LOOKS. GREAT PAIR THERE. SOME STYLISH…..
August 15, 2009 at 9:07 pm
chic, sexy, and ready for fall. a great shot and a great outfit, especially the girl on the right.

I love how the one on the right has that sheer skirt so you can still see her skinny legs, which balances the solid darkness of her jacket. Looove her Tom's too! I wanna get a pair!
August 16, 2009 at 4:07 am
August 16, 2009 at 7:35 am
A fantastic shot. If only you'd caught the end of the umbrella, too! :)
August 16, 2009 at 9:38 am
They look great with mixing different blacks. For my next month trip to NYC, I guess I need to put more black stuff in my suit case!
August 16, 2009 at 9:39 am
Long live all in black! I love the mix of the sheer skirt and the leather jacket!
August 16, 2009 at 9:43 am

I owe you another post. It seems that every time you've got an NYC shot, I criticize it for the fantastical, impractical high heels some one is inevitably wearing in that urban hiking environment.
Now, here, finally you show shoes in NYC that make total sense. Thanks!
So many posters know what the person on the right is wearing and love them. Toms. I'll look them up.
August 16, 2009 at 8:44 pm
If you saw a couple of girls walking down the road dressed like this.. you've half admire them for their obviously good taste and half wonder if you could ever pull this look off yourself. Who needs accessories when you've got that stare/pout combo. Black clearly is timeless..

August 16, 2009 at 10:59 pm
Man, there is much better stuff in NYC than this, come on.
Mm, I think I saw them a week ago at Trader Joe's — their clothing on a hot summer day alerted my eyes at once.

Hi! First time leaving a message here but have been reading your blog! I saw your book displayed on a shelf at the B&N @ Lincoln Center in NYC. So cool! Ny0311

I think they should be the new wave New Yorker look to emulate…at least for the bolder, younger and fashion focused individuals who will go there to live or visit.'Like it a lot!
August 17, 2009 at 4:55 am
Is it that cold in NYC?
August 17, 2009 at 5:31 am
What cool kids ;)
August 17, 2009 at 6:41 am
Black & white combi being brought out looking effortlessly chic! Pretty!
August 17, 2009 at 7:31 am
Haha, modern day ninjas!Girl on the right- I love the TOMS!! and those sunglasses- uber-classy
August 17, 2009 at 7:34 am
Wow, all of your images are so beautiful and put a smile on my face. I really love how this photo looks with all the black, it just proves that black will always stay a classic.
August 17, 2009 at 8:39 am
The girl on the right is AMAZING!
August 17, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Yes, absolutely they look great, but are they real?
After all, the temperatures have been in the 70s and 80s, and the humidity has been of the kind you can swim in. Yet both these ladies are in black with long sleeves. And whether that lucious jacket is plastic or leather, its owner has got to be basting in her own – um – liquids.
Show me this as on the street fashion at the end of September, maybe. But now, in the midst of August?
I'm a bit dubious.
August 17, 2009 at 12:43 pm
They look like they could be sophisticated, chilled out vacationing ninjas in NY.
August 17, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Ahh this is so beautifully New York! The cobblestones, the black, the casual urban feel of it all.
August 17, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Are they real???
August 17, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Scott – could you settle once and for all if the figure on the left is a man or woman? I think we're all a bit confused.
August 17, 2009 at 2:51 pm
So nice !!
I love it
August 17, 2009 at 4:02 pm
hah i like the sketch book in tow.
and I'm pretty sure the person on the left is a guy, not a girl
Nice to see TOMS being worn by someone other than a dirty looking hipster.
August 17, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Sheesh people– lighten up, they're just kids. I think they look fine. Nothing exceptional, but nothing too contrived either, they're obviously art school students and honoring the classic all-black dress code of such. I think it's fun. And I agree with those who say the young lady is a DEAD RINGER for a young Parker Posey. The young man reminds me of a young Ric Ocasek (of The Cars).
The portrait was obviously snapped some time ago– I'm sure they would not be wearing this in the current heat weave.

What REALLY caught my eye is the umbrella. I've been looking for one like that for the longest of times. I've been following Scott for a long long time now but this is the picture that really speaks to me. Thanks!

I think I'm in love with this photo. This is my second comment on this post… Just can't help falling in love with this photo ; buildings, cobblestones, and this chic couple!
August 18, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Love the slender dark lines against cobble-stoned SOHO, but I feel these stylings are from trying too hard. I do like the ponytailed one's old Ray Bans.

August 19, 2009 at 2:27 am
sleek sleek sleek! i wish i could be just as fashionable.
August 19, 2009 at 8:40 am
I wear black year around, also in summer; linen, light weight jerseys, silk…
I don't believe this was shot lately. Look at the man on the back ground; long over coat and a cap or hat. So maybe these cool kids have taken few layers off for the summer?
August 19, 2009 at 3:35 pm
hmmm. i cannot help myself but to me they look a bit like black grasshopper. Not the most attractive ones
August 19, 2009 at 8:56 pm

August 24, 2009 at 9:32 am

August 24, 2009 at 1:38 pm
No, but they're probably comfortable in this 90 degree weather..
August 25, 2009 at 4:41 am
somehow, this reminds me of the matrix
August 25, 2009 at 1:10 pm
nice look but would it hurt to dress a little more weather-appropriate? A leather jacket in 80' weather is a little ridiculous
August 26, 2009 at 7:03 am

I love the looks on their faces! Its far more real looking then “smile for the camera”. Very dignified. And the outfits are just as great now as they were then!
