So incredible and touching to see a cyclist with a prosthetic leg! I love the rich rusty colour of her skirt! Great image Scott! xxx
Tina @ Tinacious Me
all the brilliant colors of this picture is just too beautiful!
May 14, 2012 at 9:42 am
Rust seems to be the hot color of the moment..perhaps more so than tangerine. I can’t decide if that’s because there are more rustbuckets on the road (drivers don’t have the $ for repairs) or folks are tired of neon orange and green.
She looks just normal. I nearly overlook that.
Anyway she looks stylish although I can only see her back.
May 14, 2012 at 9:44 am
I think: she projects youth, strength, power, going somewhere. And then I see.
And I will never again complain about any shape of my body. Ever. Life-changing image.
May 23, 2013 at 1:14 am
Yes, it had the same effect on me. Great pic and great comment.
May 14, 2012 at 9:46 am
Inspiration for life. <3
Sexy girl riding a bike, with a beautiful neck back.
Only the second time that I look at the photo that I saw the prosthesis.
And she’s still sexy!
May 14, 2012 at 9:47 am
Love the colors of the pic… and her shoulders!
May 14, 2012 at 9:48 am
holy cow. thank you for sharing.
May 14, 2012 at 9:50 am
Wow she’s awesome! Good for her!
having a handicap hasn’t stopped this girl as she’s in great shape, I like her skirt and shoes
Wow. So much strength in the photo!
May 14, 2012 at 9:51 am
The perfect bike-look!
Was my first thought but then I searched her leg and now I must say:
I raise my invisible hat for you! I don’t guess that many people are selfconfident enough for such a look!
May 14, 2012 at 9:52 am
Its just beautiful, her back is gorgeous and the way her hair sweeps to the side – stunning.
I’m a bit confused by her legs.
Does she have a prosthetic limb?
The first thing that I noticed, was that her leg was missing. I really thought that you had photoshopt the picture. Pretty awesome that she daires to go in the city with a short skirt. Amazing picture, like always! Love it. <3
She is gorgeous for so many reasons.
May 14, 2012 at 9:53 am
Simplemente preciosa….. la falta de su pierna no opaca su belleza y elegancia. Te felicito!!!

What a wonderful image! I first noticed the beautiful colors, before I saw her condition. Wow, I really admire the girl’s elegance on that bike!
May 14, 2012 at 10:19 am
Scott, you were always complaining about the difficulties of catching a good shot of the cyclers but this is a great photo. Good catch.
May 14, 2012 at 10:20 am
I love this. She is beautiful and bold.
Wow. Beatiful look, brave girl.
May 14, 2012 at 10:21 am
She stays extremely elegant, even with one leg.
A woman to admire…
Talk about a 1000 words. Such a simple, yet poignant photo. I’d title it “Life Goes On,” because clearly it did for this girl.

I wouldn’t see the prosthetic leg if I didn’t read it in the comments.
What else do we need to say? Gorgeous.

May 14, 2012 at 10:33 am
You have now published four (4) consecutive photos where the subject’s face is completely obscured.
All artists go through stages, but I certainly hope this is a brief one for you.
May 14, 2012 at 10:34 am
Awesome and inspiring picture!!
Such a beautiful and very inspiring portrait! This perfectly reflects how fashion and style is not related to a certain canon of beauty nor to a specific height, silhouette, budget or skin color… is about feeling beautiful with who you are in your particular spot in life, is about making the most out of your life with the blessings you’ve got! Lovely!
May 14, 2012 at 10:35 am
i love the deep cut at the back!
May 14, 2012 at 10:36 am
Very cool. Old school bike meets high tech prosthetic.

May 14, 2012 at 10:39 am
Oh, I really love this, Scott. I liked the photo and what she’s wearing before even noticing her right leg. I’m so proud of this woman whom I don’t know at all, because she overcame a difficult situation and went on to ride her bike and be stylish about it. Very cool.
May 14, 2012 at 10:41 am

Fashion has no limits!
May 14, 2012 at 11:13 am
Incredible. This is the real art. To evoke the emotions, to evoke the ideas, the feelings. Fashion is art as well, but it’s more for the personal purposes, to express yourself, to show your personal area. But this picture, is what the photographers are trying to do. Capture the moment, that may influence the audience. This short second of an immense meaning.
May 14, 2012 at 11:19 am

May 14, 2012 at 11:51 am
My mom used to tell me when I was younger, that a woman’s back is the sexiest part of her body.
She shows no curves, it never looks vulgar, but it’s totally beautiful.
Clearly, this picture proves her right. Gorgeous!
May 14, 2012 at 11:55 am
She inspired me to be my self. Without no reason. Omg, is so simple?? Why I don’t understand that until I saw that pic..?
May 14, 2012 at 11:56 am

What an amazing, beautiful, and inspiring shot! It shows that fashion has more to do with attitude, confidence, and inner beauty radiating to all, than wearing the latest fad.
Congratulations on capturing such a wonderful subject and sharing it with all of us!

May 14, 2012 at 9:19 pm
Neither I nor my wife noticed the prosthesis until reading comments. Special pic!

I must say after reading the comments….she has a wonderful sense of were the eye goes…it’s not about her leg…
May 14, 2012 at 10:02 pm
You’re pictures lately have had a very emotional quality to them, showing people vs. fashion as they really are. I LOVE this photograph. What a great aura of strength (in her active pose, and her studry shoes) yet vulnerablity and elegance in her exposed back. Such a beautiful image, and I am happy that you caught it.
May 14, 2012 at 11:01 pm
Brilliant that the purse matches the leg… That is some serious color coordination
May 14, 2012 at 11:02 pm
Love this. Criss-cross back tops manage to look sexy and elegant at the same time.

This photo reminds me of Aimee Mullins, who has many pairs of prosthetic legs and they even made her do things other people can’t, like changing her height for example…
May 15, 2012 at 6:38 am
May 15, 2012 at 7:38 am
I’d like to see this in the “Best of 2012″ photo line-up. I hope that you could find her again and photograph a great set for those that enjoy bicycling and women. She is rather resplendent and as is your abilities. Thanks from a not-so-bombastic style prone individual.

I am fascinated by striking beauty – unusual scars or birthmarks and unusual bodyshapes.
More of this!
May 15, 2012 at 8:28 am
Absolutely amazing, such a beautiful image of a strong woman doing what she loves – no matter what.
This is image is so inspiring to see, as Zura mentioned this photo also reminds me of the strength and courage of Aimee Mullins.
This image absolutely speaks a 1,000 words and it gives me the same goose bumps as when I first heard the wise and strong words of Aimee Mullins via her Ted talks.
I’ve recently recovered from a bicycle accident where I severely broke my right leg. To see such beauty and strength captured in this photo, makes me evermore grateful for where I’m fortunate enough to be today.
Keep posting these amazing moments Scott!

Heavens, I didn’t know until I saw the word “prosthesis” go by as I scrolled down, so I scrolled right back up. And it is just the best colour. Beautiful picture of a girl on a bike.
I guess you are one of those “no hands” cyclists I see go by. (I never mastered this.) But perhaps you were not on a bike.

I simply love the girls & bikes duo… :)
May 15, 2012 at 11:31 am
its the quiet elegance of this lady that dis-allowed me from seeing her true condition. i saw her prosthetic the second time, like most of the viewers and realized its because thats not what defines her. her style and her ease of self, are so strong thats what makes her so lovely. and thats what you see.
May 15, 2012 at 11:41 am
I’ve falled in love with you.
How can i find and talk with you.
If you are seeing this please mail to me.
May 15, 2012 at 12:44 pm
Strong picture. Or should I say: strong person….
Self confident, open, powerful, playful. And somehow the shoe on the prosthesis draws my attention. Makes the leg extra ‘normal’.
May 15, 2012 at 1:07 pm

The girl in this photo is me!
That’s my hair, that’s my skirt, and that is definitely my gold leg! Looking at this photo, I realize I need a leg in platinum and jet black so I can always color coordinate this well!
I am honored by Mr. Schuman and thoroughly flattered by everyone’s comments.
I have always believed that a person’s spirit holds a strength that neither the mind nor the body could ever challenge. My leg has always been a part of who I am but it is not the definition of my character.
For me, ‘one leg’ is low on my list of importance.
Rock some sunshine!
P.S. I had cancer when I was eight years old. If you would like to know more, check out my blog, http://www.goldmettle.blogspot.com, so The Sartorialist can get back to fashion.
May 15, 2012 at 2:45 pm
does anyone know who this is? we would love to ask her question, etc. (people from reddit)
May 15, 2012 at 3:03 pm
Agreed. there’s a story here–and if she’s interested in talking, as a bike commuter and bike advocate, I’d certainly be listening..ask some questions, etc
please email me at [email protected] if you find out who this person is.
May 15, 2012 at 3:07 pm
I’ve never seen a prosthesis made that way (as opposed to the more traditional beige calf-shaped ones); I hear many people are opting for prostheses that lay bare the mechanisms, valuing the functional beauty itself. That’s neat how people are able to use their choices of prostheses as self-expression now, as this woman’s sartorial choices show.
The other mechanics of her outfit are a mystery to me, though. What is the bra situation? (um, braless on a bike would hurt for me). I’ve never been able to 1. get my belt to stay just so that way or 2. bike in a billowing skirt. But it’s pretty.

This photo simply floored me.
Jessie, you are beautiful and this photo is just so, so wonderful.
May 15, 2012 at 6:52 pm
the prosthetic leg itself looks beautiful. it looks to be built so simply, minimal in design. it’s her most unique fashion accessory. with confidence like hers, there would never be stigma or weakness in that which makes us unique in a population of millions and billions.
May 15, 2012 at 8:29 pm
Sartorialist, you are the best.
May 15, 2012 at 10:22 pm
Well Jessie, this is a fabulous picture of you! It is rocking sunshine all over the place.
May 15, 2012 at 10:31 pm
Love the look.Nice pictures that depicts style; whether be in streets or in an abandoned building. The color of the skirt suits her, she looks nice even in that leg. Inspiring!
May 15, 2012 at 11:10 pm
Hay algo de esa paleta de colores que hace de esta foto una maravilla.
May 15, 2012 at 11:19 pm
I LOVE HER!
May 15, 2012 at 11:43 pm
I loved the picture so much that it took me a while to notice the leg. Everything says freedom and comfort in her own skin. Congratulations Jessie for giving such a great example that with courage every day is a new chapter to write in the book of our live. Scott, one of the photos I’ve liked the most.
May 16, 2012 at 12:59 am
i see this girl around the east village very often and she always looks incredible, super stylish, rocking the prosthetic with no care in the world.
the first time i saw her it was the last thing i noticed, she’s beautiful and exudes so much confidence.
i know a couple of other people with prosthetic limbs and they hide them away, so much respect to this girl who clearly couldn’t care less and never lets it affect her style.
May 16, 2012 at 1:05 am
May 16, 2012 at 1:25 am
Wow! I didn’t even notice the leg until I scrolled through the comments
May 16, 2012 at 2:04 am
First impression is then explosion of colors, then you’ll see the her leg, she is in fashion even with an artificial leg. Stunning.

It was only after reading some comments that I realised what I didn’t see earlier. Don’t mean to be dramatic but all the positive and encouraging comments brought tears to my eyes. I hope the girl in the pix sees all these great words for her…

May 18, 2012 at 11:28 pm
it took me several moments to make sense what this photo encompassed. the movement, colors and sensuality give form to beauty and it was surprising to find it tied to an unlikely reality. it is an amazing image as it seems to enthrall and inspire all-in-one – what heady combination. so, all i can really say is thank you for sharing!
May 19, 2012 at 12:35 am

May 26, 2012 at 8:10 pm
Currently obsessed with how people wear their outfits whilst riding bikes – there are lots of restrictions and things to think about. Glad to see you appreciate someone doing it right!
May 27, 2012 at 3:07 am
this is breathtaking. and the best part is I saw the outfit first. shes gorgeous.
May 29, 2012 at 4:57 am

This girl is Jessie Rowe, one of the greatest and most beautiful people i know. She’s my best friend, room mate, soul sister and partner in crime. I’m so glad you shared some of the energy she exudes on your blog. xox
May 30, 2012 at 5:03 pm
Wow, this is a beautiful photo. So moving, I had to share it with my friends as well. In the photo she just exudes self confidence, which is awesome. She seems like an awesome person I’d want to meet.
May 30, 2012 at 9:56 pm
This picture left me speechless. It touches on so many levels. I admire her for her style sense and confidence in riding her bike without a care in the world. The photographer has a great eye for not only outstanding fashion but takes the pictures with such care and thoughtfulness. I need to leave Canada and move to NYC!
May 31, 2012 at 1:11 pm
Sartorialist~~~ you are the best of best ….thank you.
May 31, 2012 at 4:11 pm
I was stunned at what I saw, when I looked carefully and I must say there’s this something in the photo, the power of that girl, I guess, that makes me come back and look again and again. I, myself, have an invasion into my body of a similar kind, invisible from the outside , but this is just so much more brave and obvious and I love this girl for not trying to go around complaining about it, as that’s what I understand about her, when I see the photo… something similar to this surfer’s story, Bethany Hamilton, who’s arm had been bitten away by a shark, and who says, she’s only the more special this way… WOW! These things really got me thinking lately. Thank you for the photo.
June 1, 2012 at 5:37 pm

It’s funny how our eyes are attracted to our insecurities. When I first saw this image I was drawn to her back b/c I wish I had a stronger back. Then I looked again and gasped at my tunnel vision *because* of my insecurity.
Thank you so much! This post highlighted what I need to work on as a person. Letting go of my insecurities.
