only for the select few and for those who master the art of odd combinations, but looks great here!

July 6, 2011 at 4:34 pm
cargo shorts and successful in one sentence? ;)
July 6, 2011 at 4:35 pm
I love the italian style !!
July 6, 2011 at 4:36 pm
Don't like it, I can tell the shorts are much slimmer than most cargo pants, however it just doesn't do it for me.

He pulls this off well.
July 6, 2011 at 4:39 pm
Hmmmm well it doesn't look terrible but I don't think Im convinced.
July 6, 2011 at 4:42 pm
I think he pulls it off. The trick is the really tight fitting jacket that doesn't hang too much at the waist and clings more like a shirt.
Still would take a very confident man to pull off.
July 6, 2011 at 4:43 pm
July 6, 2011 at 4:47 pm
Not a fan.
July 6, 2011 at 4:50 pm
I don't think so. Makes an otherwise attractive man look like a doofus!
July 6, 2011 at 4:56 pm
It's times like these doctors cuffs are actually useful… He should unbutton his cuffs and roll them up rather than just tugging his sleeves.
July 6, 2011 at 5:05 pm
The sports coat is very casual so, it does indeed look good with the shorts..
He has great legs….
July 6, 2011 at 5:17 pm
i like it!
July 6, 2011 at 5:18 pm
I think summer's the time for the unconventional and this is a nice change of pace.

Never again do we have to choose between going on safari or attending a polo match. In all seriousness though; cargo shorts will forever remain the bastard son of an Elizabethan man's skirt (the unexplainable slashed pillow thing above his tights). I would rather forget they existed.Great touch of detail in the sleeves though. The rolled cuff strikes a fine balance between neat and scruffy.
July 6, 2011 at 5:25 pm
i love the little band on his ankle
cool sporty detail
July 6, 2011 at 5:27 pm
I must indeed be a confident man then.
July 6, 2011 at 5:28 pm
Sorry still don't think it was a success!! Maybe if he was BORAT.
July 6, 2011 at 5:31 pm
Maybe if they were slimmer and shorter. Baggy cargos are the exclusive province of frat boys.
July 6, 2011 at 5:34 pm
A man imposing fashion – good picture !!my blog :http://modefemme.blogspot.com/
July 6, 2011 at 5:40 pm
Not so much.
July 6, 2011 at 5:47 pm
I'm loving the overall consensus on this look. Cargo shorts can't really be successful with anything. Dark jeans would make this outfit work superbly though.

July 6, 2011 at 5:55 pm
he definitely pulled it of nicely! i like the sporty ankle bracelet!
July 6, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Okay, I'm now convinced that cargo shorts can be chic, but then again, I was wearing black silk MC Hammer-style pants last Saturday night, so I understand if my perspective is seen as somewhat suspect…
July 6, 2011 at 6:06 pm
I'm not sure if they are successfully combined, but he looks quite well anyway.
July 6, 2011 at 6:10 pm
No, this is proof that they cannot be successfully combined unless of course, you are either 8years old or Angus Young.
July 6, 2011 at 6:15 pm
Hmm, would this work with tattooed legs??
July 6, 2011 at 6:16 pm
July 6, 2011 at 6:42 pm
I like the bagginess of the shorts. he takes that look ('frat boy') and makes it his own in the inimitable Italian way. I think it looks cool. As others have remarked, it is largely about the tighter, shorter cut of the jacket. And, as someone else also said, it's summer! so why not.
July 6, 2011 at 6:43 pm
Not sure about this one….
July 6, 2011 at 7:03 pm
Maybe he went clamming before work? :)
Interesting, it does work in the photo, but not sure if everyone could pull it off.
July 6, 2011 at 7:05 pm
Maybe if we saw his front side we would be better convinced. From the back, not so much. his legs look 2 inches short!
July 6, 2011 at 7:12 pm
Just came back from Florence myself. Beautiful city!
After that I went to Chianti to enjoy some of the fine wine ;-)

I think it's only proof that Italians always look good, in spite of what they're wearing!! :)
life is happy most of the time.
July 6, 2011 at 7:24 pm
its true. not easy to do but he pulled it off!
would be right on the moola if he wore it with red wings,hi-tops or oxfords/wing-tips,sockless than the sneaks
July 6, 2011 at 7:51 pm
he is so hot!
July 6, 2011 at 8:31 pm
Not feeling it.
Not sure how well the combination works….maybe he is transitioning into the weekend? But the cargo shorts are sexy. Make me think a he could tack a sailboat, drive a Jeep, wouldn't faint if he saw a big spider.
And look at those legs!
July 6, 2011 at 8:37 pm
Great legs or not, this doesn't work.
July 6, 2011 at 8:52 pm
better if they weren't cargo…
July 6, 2011 at 8:56 pm
what makes it work is the material of the jacket & shorts is similar. and the 3/4 sleeves with that bit of white peeking out.took a plain khaki jacket and 'deconstructed it' perfectly.
July 6, 2011 at 9:10 pm
Yup….He just knows how to do it!
July 6, 2011 at 9:59 pm
No.The top half works for me, though.
July 6, 2011 at 10:14 pm
This is not proof to me, sorry!
July 6, 2011 at 10:22 pm
what kind of shoes are those?
July 6, 2011 at 10:43 pm
Love the look especially since we are both of similar proportions. Hmmm…
July 6, 2011 at 10:59 pm
its sooo specific, while I'm not into it, I get it. And he pulled it off really well.
July 7, 2011 at 12:32 am
indeed, quite difficult for the majority of males to pull-off though
Next Century Sean
July 7, 2011 at 12:57 am
Combined yes, but only in France and/or Italy most likely…even in NY it might just come off as sloppy. But if a man is confident and can carry himself…it just might work. A canvas briefcase of some sort would have pulled it all together.

great picture that sums up the Italian male vanity: the strait-jacket to emphasize the figure, the forced performance of arms and legs tanning, the ankle bracelet (no, I can't stand it!), the rolled sleeves (of jacket!)… at least, tell me that you were in a seaside town!
July 7, 2011 at 3:25 am
curious that tape at the right ankle!
July 7, 2011 at 4:03 am
Sorry Sart, but in my opinion this is a truly unsuccessful combination of separates!
July 7, 2011 at 4:58 am
July 7, 2011 at 5:54 am
It looks OK from that viewpoint, but would you want to see it coming towards you?
July 7, 2011 at 6:02 am
He pulls it off, but don't let mainstream think it's ok to give it a go!! This takes confidence, love it though.

I think maybe what throws me off is a) the fact cargo shorts have infiltrated Italia, b) the color! If he was wearing one of those denim sportcoats you posted it might work.

July 7, 2011 at 9:09 am
Huh. I think it looks great and it doesn't actually look that tricky at all to me. Don't know what I'm missing that this is getting such mixed reviews here.
July 7, 2011 at 10:00 am
My husband would love this. Can't get him out of shorts in the summer.
July 7, 2011 at 10:02 am
No way. You really missed that one…
July 7, 2011 at 10:13 am
July 7, 2011 at 10:25 am
maybe you had to be there? it looks silly to me. the cargo shorts and jacket look bad. those shoes aren't right for the jacket. and with all those pockets available, he still has to carry his camera?
July 7, 2011 at 10:55 am
Doesn't work at all…
July 7, 2011 at 11:46 am
Really believe your feel of fashion, but can't agree in this exact post.
July 7, 2011 at 12:09 pm
REVOLVER-I don't think anything works w/tattooed legs…….
July 7, 2011 at 12:12 pm
You think things couldn't get worse, and then there's this.
July 7, 2011 at 12:48 pm
What a great inspiration for most American men this summer!!!! So tired of the same old bland Kaki bermudas!!! Dress it up with a coordinated linen jacket and you look polished already. Can I forward that picture to all my male friends? ;)
July 7, 2011 at 12:54 pm
July 7, 2011 at 1:50 pm
see i like the combination, just not the colours..they don't go together..he looks clean though.
July 7, 2011 at 1:59 pm
Cargo… as in: escargot my car go? If not dont go there or leave me be while you go at it…
July 7, 2011 at 2:44 pm
It's all about the proportions, and this guy got them right. The shorts don't balloon out either.
For this to work, I'm thinking the cargo shorts need to stop just above the knee. Going sockless in sneakers helps keep the look casual chic instead of casual sloppy.
Of course, it helps to have a great body and, in this case, muscular legs.
July 7, 2011 at 2:48 pm
Interesting combination. Nice. catherine-oneway.blogspot.com
July 7, 2011 at 3:40 pm
Reminds me of those children's picture books where you mismatch the top of one person to the bottom of another. Sorry – none to keen on this one but does provoke a reaction.
July 7, 2011 at 5:52 pm
July 7, 2011 at 6:39 pm
that looks like CRAP! Cargo shorts = the devil
July 8, 2011 at 1:25 am
Why does an item of clothing have to belong to the domain of any one group, in this case frat boys?If you think that then it says a lot for A&F marketing. Isn't it more about lifestyle? If you live on the coast it makes perfect sense but perhaps less so if you're from the city. Stereotyping sucks at the best of times and with all things there's cargo shorts and then there's cargo shorts. It's like saying polo shirts are only for upper Eastside tossers.
July 8, 2011 at 2:00 am
Its nothing terrible. But it doesn't exactly work. He either needs to take off the jacket and shirt and put on a henley or t shirt; Or else, he needs to take off the jacket and put on some summer slacks or jeans. They just don't go together. I like the shorts, and I like the jacket. But not together. I do like the ankle thing he has going.

I love his individual style!
July 8, 2011 at 7:56 am
Your caption appears to have been shortened Scott, the words "to make the wearer look an utter mess" appear to have be missing. It's fair to say I'm a fan of neither combats (whatever their length/fit) or pushed up coat sleeves on a suit or other semi formal coat.
Good photograph though, held detail throughout the brightness range.

July 8, 2011 at 10:01 am
I like this … never thought I would say that as I normally hate cargo shorts.
July 8, 2011 at 11:30 am
That is interesting.
July 8, 2011 at 12:23 pm
I'm against the cargo shorts look. OK, at the beach, in the country, maybe. I think it's dumbing down men, just like the baseball cap (esp. backwards). I'm tired of men dressing like third graders. I want them to start looking like men again. Put on the long pants, dudes!
July 9, 2011 at 1:14 am
to rEVOLVEr:Black classic kilt will work good with tattoed legs, if you can pull off the "badass look"good luck~ag
July 9, 2011 at 1:15 am
Fashion conscience Dads often rock this look in early Fall.
July 9, 2011 at 1:18 am
I completely agree with Charlotte K.
July 9, 2011 at 3:55 am
Hate it. Looks far too sloppy and those shoes are the final nail in the coffin! Sandals would have maybe rescued this outfit? Maybe. Doubtful though
July 9, 2011 at 4:47 am
i like it. very bold
July 9, 2011 at 7:23 am
I definitely believe that he gets away with it. Someone else might not have done it but that´s exactly what style is about, to know what suites you and what doesn´t.
July 9, 2011 at 11:17 am
Nope. This just doesn't work. Maybe if the shorts were a few inches longer, and the cargo pockets were lower. Or if he had skinnier knees. And that little ankle bracelet just emphasizes the stubbiness of the whole ensemble. A hat could possibly redeem it somewhat….
July 9, 2011 at 12:06 pm
This is a guy who does what he wants – I like it because of that! Not everyone would have the guts to wear this.
July 9, 2011 at 4:45 pm
Perhaps if everything else was a little more rugged looking or had a military style to it. But with everything else, the shorts look out of place in my opinion. The colors all match but that's about it.
Without the cargo pockets this would have worked well in an understated way.
July 10, 2011 at 6:56 am
I love it ;)
July 10, 2011 at 6:01 pm
Oh I dunno if I would agree with 'successful', but then I have a very healthy bias against cargo shorts!
July 10, 2011 at 7:10 pm
just wondering where he's headed. he wouldn't get past some doors. :)
July 11, 2011 at 11:52 am
Great Look ;)
July 11, 2011 at 10:47 pm
No. No, they can't.
July 12, 2011 at 2:52 am
Ummmmm… no. The top half looks ok in and of itself, as does the bottom half (though I'd lose the ankle-watch affectation). But put the two together and the result is what looks like a superannuated frat boy, bless his earth-toned little heart, desperately clinging to his youth.
July 12, 2011 at 1:21 pm
I don't see why people don't like cargo shorts in general. I think they can look great on a guy. I am also a bit weirded out that people talk like a fashion choice is a sign of intellect or maturity. You can't tell any of that from what a person wears. Some of the smartest people I know dress like crap.
July 13, 2011 at 1:32 am
What is everyone's beef with cargo shorts? Its not going away anytime soon and, for men at least, its a staple. Some people even look great in them. This pair of shorts are perfect. Slightly above the knee and with just enough room in the fit so it does not look like a tent. THe color palette works but I wished you shot a frontal to see the rest of the outfit. Not for eveyone but inspiring nonetheless.
September 16, 2012 at 11:20 pm
I guess I just see too many worn badly and as a “uniform” of sorts – ugly baggy khaki shorts; ugly too big t-shirt untucked; and *UGHHH* flip-flops. People are such sheep with ZERO imagination. I have never understood the approach of wanting – actually – desperately NEEDING to look like everyone else!
July 16, 2011 at 5:02 am

I am obsessed to wear cargo shorts. These are best ways to style up with cargo shorts. Thanks for sharing.
