not fair. last time I rode a bike in Amsterdam i cycled right into a bollard and had a huge hole in my leg. How do people do it?! And look gorgeous at the same time?!
Nice! Beautiful pictures in many ways. Strange, patronizing and quite anoying that someone made the remark that these ladies should be wearing helmets.
I don't comment often, but that last pic is my favorite. There's such wind in her face (almost like she just took in a big breath), hair is swirling, clothes are expanded, almost like she's parachuting — everything is billowy and full.
Great photos; truly remarkable they were taken from your bike. Europeans always have the correct blke for any occasion. All three ladies are lovely – ah but the Milanese is the one for me.
About Amsterdam's picture … so good I had to post a comment for. Was she posing..?
We have… great shallow depth of field, more than one human element, the sense of moving while seeing where we are heading and where we are. The look of her to the camera and the hair… It is an awesome picture! Perfect frame and everything… a 10!
Love these photos of femmes on bikes! (loved the earlier one as well of the well dressed Italian on bike)…Bikes are such a lovely accessory in themselves as well as great green/fitness transport! I love the orange bag in the second photo/ and the third photo has an especially nice ambience.
love all three ladies/looks. milan is my fave look, but amsterdam is my fave lady. copenhagen is like looking into the past – out of africa in the city… ironic since she's danish…
As a helmet-wearing cyclist (not an American), I'd love to see examples of folk who make safety stylish. If it can be done on motorbikes, surely it's possibly on the pedal version!
per previous comments, I think it is very telling (and terrific!) that hardly anyone in Europe wears a bike helmet. #1, I think the drivers have more respect for the bikes, and #2, there are more people riding bikes in the cities (especially in places like Amsterdam or CPH) and they are more highly visible en masse. I wish we were as civilized here and did not have to protect ourselves against our fellow human beings all the time. I generally ride without a helmet but it is a bit dicier here for sure. Also: great photos!!
We all know that the Sartorialist usu goes bonkers for girls on bicycles. :) These three ladies are no exception and it's hard to pick a favorite photo from this bunch. The Milanese girl's orange bag — is it a Kelly?
amazing pics! bike advocacy orgs ought to use your pics to promote cycling – they would attract so many more ppl than the current workout gear & helmet clad folks they use. but then again, the americans might complain about lack of helmets and impractical clothing. Anyways, motion – cycling, walking, running – somehow always makes people more fashionable.
It's so refreshing to leave Seattle and see that not everyone wears head-to-toe spandex and helmets to go on a bike ride. Out here you ride helmetless and people yell at you for it.
@Christina: hear hear. @Scott Schuman It seems that you don't find people on bicycles with helmets that are stylish? Or don't think that they are? As a life-long helmet wearer (and non-prostelytizer) who loves your blog, I dare you to find some examples of people who can make this safety feature an addition to their aesthetic. They must be out there and if anyone can find them it would be you.
These shots are fantastic! Not to kill the mood or anything, but it isn't it not exactly safe to be riding a bike with one hand while taking the perfect shot with a camera in the other hand? But all concerns about security aside, these shots really are very beautiful.
Anon 12.08 and Ebbie 12.14 – buy an upright bike with a chain guard and you can wear whatever you like, just like when bikes were invented and Victorian women wore their usual clothes. Women in Europe (and Asia) haven't had cycling marketed to them as a difficult, dangerous, complicated, sweaty sporting activity, so they still ride bikes the simple, useful, joyful way we all used to.
i wish i knew how to ride a bicycle! its one thing i never learnt how to do – i do rollerskate though haha… the top shot is so lovely – her hair is gorgeous and very healthy!
Love the movement in the first one. Too beautiful. I also like the way the burgundy-esque lips match up with the red on the bicycle. The canted angle of the picture is what makes it the most appealing, though. It's this idea of movement. And the cyclist before her makes it even more visually wonderful as it seems like this is what she would do on a normal day. Fantastic. Now I want a bicycle and a person who follow me around whenever I look fabulous.
Can't believe you took these while riding a bike. Impressive. The bike with all its shadows is such a minimalist, elegant transportation mode and these lovely riders are the perfect contrast.
Great shots. Great fashion. I'm inspired to create a bike-riding wardrobe.
@anonymous That's totally cool, but I'd like to see how it can look good. Here in Canada (Vancouver) I'm legally required to wear a helmet and doing so has saved me from serious injury in the past, so I'd love to see how other folks do it without looking like dorks. One thing I've noticed here is that some ladies with shorter hair will put their helmet on when their hair is still wet and have something like a finger roll by the time they get where they're going. It's pretty lovely.
It seems like you get a hundred times more beautiful and attractive when riding a bike. The first girl does not wear bright colours or eccentric make-up but with her simple attitude (and of course her stunning hair) she seems to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Like she dropped out of paradise just some hours ago.
I've been looking around for a while now for a bike to ride around town. Some kind of bike with either a vintage feel like those in the pictures or a simple single speed. Any suggestions for stylish & affordable bikes?
love the bike theme, very young, hip, european. I especially like the middle photograph, the colors of her belt with the leather bag really complement the black.
I assume when you are riding around the city all day in expensive designer gear, its becuase you don't have a job. (And apparently, don't need one.) (Maybe its a job keeping all those designers in business!)
I don't buy the "Europeans don't wear helmets, so that makes it OK." Europeans also smoke a lot more cigarettes than Americans – they still get lung cancer, which is neither cute nor stylish. You wouldn't do a road trip feature in which nobody wore seat belts. Why show cyclists making a similarly idiotic choice? I used to be a bike racer and have seen too many injuries happen to people too cool to wear helmets. Glamorizing biking without a helmet is incredibly irresponsible.
The woman in the second photo with the white sunglasses is pure gorgeousness. She has the whole thing down, the Hermes bag, the sarong skirt the black strapless top. I only wish that she was wearing a helmet.
The lady in the third photo (Copenhagen) is beautiful. The moody grey sky in the background perfectly complements her grey and green toned outfit. Bikes are definitely in this year.

Anyways, motion – cycling, walking, running – somehow always makes people more fashionable.

@Christina: hear hear.

That's totally cool, but I'd like to see how it can look good.
