Throw on a great dress and a good sandal and you’re done – I guess the trick is finding those few “right dresses” of the season but still.
Do guys ever look as “put-together” in shorts and a shirt as women do in a little summer dress?….sometimes, maybe, rarely…but not nearly as often and as easily as women.

This is a great look (and I love her puppy, too). I’ll bet the guys on this board don’t like this “easy” look, though…too mumu, no leg or waist.
My husband is a huge fan of drawstring linen trousers for summer, and wears them instead of shorts, with just a nice t-shirt (untucked, and not too long). He always looks cool and put together, if I do say so myself.

She looks sooo this season – so fresh and summery. Love the dress (fab sandals too) but I’d cinch it in the waist with a big tan leather belt to take the ‘oriental nightie’ edge off it.
But the most important element is of course the dog – he/she utterly gorgeous – v. foxy and certainly knows how to pose.

that is so true. i’ve been thinking about men’s fashion a lot lately, and i honestly believe in some ways its much harder for men to look great. its easy to look okay, but to do it well. its really tough. and their’s not a lot of help out there either.
on the flip side, i’m so glad that women wear such beautiful summer dresses…i wouldn’t begrudge them that.

Exactly. Not only is it a simple and chic look, but it’s so comfortable. The equivalent for guys would be cotton shorts and a wife-beater tank. The antithesis of simple and chic.

Men can do it. I witness the finesse of my husband dressing in the morning. He slips on a suede summer loafer (fratelli rossetti)…a linen shirt and jeans. All in about five minutes. I find his simple style…just that….simple…but, style.

She is gorgeous and I love the dress. Not sure if its vintage (probably not and was absurdly costly) but if it was vintage and it was me I would have hemmed it to above the knee to give it a younger, lighter feel.

It’s one of the best things about being a woman — even a shortwaisted one with a few extra pounds — I can throw on a dress, I’m comfortable, I only have to co-ordinate shoes and jewelry, I don’t come untucked, and everyone thinks I’m dressing up. I’m happy to see you (and your readers) appreciate the ease and elegance. (I even wear dresses in the winter with boots.)

I disagree – men can definitely look put together in warmer climates. A bright polo with a pair of khaki shorts and Sperry Topsiders is an American classic. Or, pair them with matching or contrasting rubber flipflops. There is so much versatility in these simple pieces – from tucking or untucking, to wearing a great ribbon belt, chino shorts with a white polo, to colored Sperrys, wearing shorter length shorts or bright madras (with a polo to pick up on its colors), even nuances like leaving the polo unbuttoned or popping the collar can create a look that is simple, clean, and epitomizes the American summer. I think polos always look best when are a little higher on the arm and are closer to the body, and aren’t paired with cargo shorts of any kind. Let fit, proportion, and balance be the mantra.

Have to admit that was my approach to summer this year. I deliberately targeted a number of dresses for both work and play, as opposed to tops and bottoms.
It is as you say, just throw on the dress, pair with fabulous shoes and you’re set!

I think it is deeply important to have a basenji pup in all his sleekness nearby to balance the fullness of the dress. I must remember this technique in the future.

you are so right: girls have got an easy time, with nice shoes and a nice little dress, and boom! they look amazing. I’ve been spotting people for my street-style-blog today, and it’s much harder to find a well-dressed guy, when everyone is wearing shorts and a polo. It can be nice, but it will never get the same level of simple sophistication as the girls achieve.

Sart, she looks great because she’s young, tall, slim and beautiful. The outfit looks good on her.
On the same token, a handsome young man (say Jake Gyllenhal) will look great in short, t-shirt and sandals too.

Leave it to a guy to say dressing is easier for women than men. I can’t believe more women aren’t laughing out loud at this one.
IMHO, shorts and a shirt are in NO WAY equivalent to a dress and sandals. We live in a time that women can and do wear shorts – and have the same problems as men doing it elegantly, particularly in the city. Dresses are quite simply one or more steps up from shorts.

I too think this dress looks muumuu-esque. At least with the tent minidresses you get to see some leg. And I’m saying this as a straight woman.
Would love to see more examples of men looking stylish in the summer. I’m trying to help my boyfriend find a summer look that’s comfortable, sporty and relaxed but more refined than cargo shorts and boxy striped polos. I feel like stylish summer clothes for men are the Holy Grail of fashion.

i l.o.v.e. the dress, her skin, her DOG!, everything about it.
the color of this dress is strikingly attractive and with her blonde hair and tan skin she can’t go wrong.
with our lovely woman here, it seems as though she’s pulled off brilliantly the “effortless” look without actually putting effort into this at all. what could be better than that?
unfortunately for men, it doesn’t seem to work quite as easy.

yes, this is very welcome…. actually i was watching old episodes of seinfeld (yes) and noticing how elaine wore much more lose fitting clothing than what we have been accustomed to. It dawned on me that in the past 10 years ultra-fitted clothing has pretty much been the norm. i’m glad to see this shift, but even more glad to see the shift in consciousness that’s coming along with it.

r.e. anonymous at 3.38:
I think it’s ridiculous to assume that all women must go through “pedicures, waxing, plucking, scrubbing, self-tanning, make-up, weight watching, thongs riding up our butts, and underwire bras cutting into our skin” in order to be stylish and appear well put together. Many women featured on this lovely blog are pale, makeup-less, and/or over a size 2. I don’t venture to speculate on the state of their underwear. I believe that it is laughably restrictive and narrow-minded to define beauty with such a prescription; while some women do these things look amazing, many who do just some or even none of them are also beautiful and stylish ladies.

The other day in Spain I saw a man wearing white linen pants, sandals, and a fitted black t-shirt. Same effect, and he looked amazing. Provided, you have to be in decent shape. But then that’s just another part of the “so easy” that women have it. ;)

i loooove dresses. the best article of clothing, ever. so easy and comfortable. i justify all my dress expenditures by splurging on beautiful ones that can be worn all year ’round, though – with stockings and knee socks and sweaters in the winter, with bare legs and lip gloss in the summer. hooray for being a girl!

i’m sorry sart i love your eye for fashion but the only thing that makes this outfit work is the dog, and the fact that the woman is tall blonde and skinny. the dress screams dowdy nightgown. but maybe that’s what style is about…being able to pull something off that would otherwise look dowdy…but then that means as long as your tall blonde and skinny anything would look good.

yes, that is Karen from Marchesa. I think very few women can pull that look off (if you are a bit on the plus side, you will appear bigger; if you petite/thin, you can get swallowed up in it). Karen pulls it off perfectly! i do agree, the tan skin, blonde hair pulled and the dog add to it.
i am sure she is just running errands and walking the dog. i don’t think this kind of dress would be appropriate for work, etc.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but I think what keeps it from looking dowdy, etc. is the fact that the proportions are absolutely perfect – just like in men’s tailored garments. The amount of fabric, sleeve and hem length are exactly right. An inch or two difference in either direction would have ruined it. And, yeah, it doesn’t hurt that she’s tall and gorgeous. Good bearing, simple hair and accessories – just right!
Scott asks: Do guys ever look as “put-together” in shorts and a shirt… Rarely. There have been a few on here that have come close, but I see shorts and shirt too often taken as the easy way out. It’s just hard to pull a look together that really says anything other than – it’s summer and I’m going to wear as little as possible to be comfortable – to hell with fashion.
