Where should we go?

Screen Shot 2018-05-18 at 10.06.16 AM

Sicily or Capri or Amalfi Coast or Puglia?

Jenny and I have a few days after men’s fashion week to spend in Italy on the beach but we can’t decide which heaven to choose!

We are so channeling The Talented Mr. Ripley this Summer (but without all the killing)

It’s terrible having to make a choice. Let’s just say that all possible locations are equal. Well they look that way. Relax, go ahead have a nice latte.

I hope that remark is sarcastic. an island is an island. and the Sartorialist man, you could choose reality over fiction….so Capri, walk in the steps of emperor Tiberius, who lived there at the beginning of the 1st century in 12 sumptuous villas no less ……..for sure, he did kill more people than Ripley, he’s one million time more fascinating than him too. And you can learn a bit of history while reading about Patricia Highsmith …

If it’s just a few days – Amalfi. If you haven’t been it is a spectacular taster trip. We’ve been a few times and recommend it (we’re thinking of going again…) – we did a boat trip to Capri, which was spectacular but just enough – Capri = tourists, while in smaller places around Amalfi you have maybe fewer tourists. Sicily …this is a whole longish trip in itself – a week wasn’t enough for me, I need maybe 3 weeks to briefly see all I want to see. Maybe I just wanted to see too much. The only thing with beaches there is that it’s the Positano beach or any smaller places beaches which are usually about 950 steps down the main road, hahaha. Conca dei Marini has the Emerald Cave with a lift, so no need for 950 steps down and then up (that’s reserved for Praiano :) ). From Amalfi you can drive to Sorrento and take the train to Naples (don’t even think about driving there!!). I am afraid I could go on and on, but my advice is Amalfi!

I would suggest Siracusa-the stunning Ortigia and maybe drive a few kms down to Noto and Marzamemi to see some really stunning places and beautiful sea. Food is amazing, the people are great, the beaches are rough yet beautiful and it’s a great experience

Amalfi…. You can easily make a day trip to Capri and Ischia :)

  7. Rob

Yes, Ischia is the right answer.

I strongly suggest Pantelleria, off the coast of Trapani: if you’re lucky enough to find a direct flight, and you’re into food And drink, as well as sun and sea, go for it. It seems like you’re a billion miles away from the rest of our dog-eat-dog world. … The ultime chillout!

I follow Jenny on Instagram and I know she’s so into The Talented Mr. Ripley, now (great novel, good movie, great style).
So I would say Ischia (part of the film was shot there) but also Cinque Terre, if I’m not wrong the movie was shot there, too.
Among what you suggested, I’d say Capri or Amalfi.

I’m between Capri and Amalfi because I think that both are really beautiful and picturesque. But I think I would go for Amalfi coast because it has some kind of vintage italian vibes I really like!

Sicily! Less pretentious, cheaper, full of astonishing monuments, great food, charmingly decadent. Ortigia, Vendicari, Mozia, San Vito Lo Capo.

Cèfalu, in Sicily. Beautiful beach, cobblestone town and scrumptious food. What more could you want? Would have recommended Taormina (and eat at Oseteria Nero D’avola), but beach not as nice…Fare un viaggio devertente!

I just returned from a four day crossing from Ostuni all the way to Amalfi crossing the Puglia, Basilicata and Campagna regions.

I would recommend stays in Ostuni, Matera, Positano or Sorrento with a visit to Capri.

Amalfi coast is amazing to stay … and also u should see Ravello for the magnifique view of the coast (highly reccomended) … and if u stay in Amalfi , u have the chance t o arrive in Positano around 30 minutes and to be in Capri by ferry around one hour … And in all destinations in Amalfi coast u’ll find yourself in a scene of Talented Mr. Ripley for sure ….

    Hi Scott,
I asked your question to the top two Italy experts. They know the country like no other and I would think of going to no-one else for advice like this. Both recommended the Amalfi Coast.

Why? Because it bursts with color and a uniquely Italian spirit. Amalfi brims with beautiful Italian villages, authentic and delicious local food, and gorgeous bays and beaches to swim or sunbathe under the Faraglioni rocks.
The opportunity to explore the Capri coastline on a private boat with a local skipper who knows exactly where to find all the hidden gems of the area is simply not to be missed.
    I hope you enjoy it!

Costiera Amalfitana, Rapallo, Ravello, Positano, Capri, Sardegna, Ischia, Puglia are wonderful, but if you want to do something off of the beaten path, but still unforgettable go to the magic Ortigia (Siracusa). We stayed at the Hotel des Etrangers (I suspect you’d love it). So many things to do nearby and to see: Heraclea Minoa, Noto, Sciacca, Agrigento,Modica.

May I suggest Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, Via Torquato Tasso, Sorrento.
It was one of the locations of “Avanti” by Willy Wilder, starring Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills. Very nice and amusing film(1972).
    Have a nice holiday.

My fiancee and I are getting married in Avellino just outside of Naples, you’re welcome to join us. That would be an authentic experience. I think there’s even a sagra at that time. A sagra is a festival dedicated to the saint of some delicious cheese or cured meat. They happen periodically throughout the summer and into fall. It’s the scence in The Talented Mr. Ripley where Jude Law’s lover is found dead in the water.

We’ll be there for a month and a half taking a break from NYC so let us know if you’re interested. Her family also has a house there that’s empty.

    Auguri and enjoy.

Cinque terre/Portovenere/Levanto/Tellaro/Portofino…the whole east coast of Liguria. If you plan on visiting more than one place, maybe you’d better rent a scooter or a motorbike (there are great scenic roads overlooking the sea, and in this season traffic starts to be quite bothering, above all during weekends).
    Have fun!

What i do not understood is in fact how you are no longer actually much more
well-appreciated than you may be right now.
You are so intelligent. You realize therefore considerably in the
case of this matter, made me in my view imagine it from numerous
varied angles. Its like women and men aren’t interested except it is one thing
to accomplish with Lady gaga! Your personal stuffs great.
At all times take care of it up!
