Welcome to TheSartorialist.com!

Welcome to our new home, TheSartorialist.com.  (Make sure to change your bookmark!)

I have been working on this relaunch for a while and I am so happy to get a chance to share this with you.  I’ve tried to keep the clean, very visual layout of the original blog while making it easier to navigate.

Just for fun – type in a word to the Search bar. Here’s what I did… Giovanna. I love how that page looks.

Then there’s Categories.  Select “Women.” Roll over the image and check out how that title bar scrolls across the image!

As for Tags…play around with it!  I’ve had a lot of fun tagging my favorites – “Classic Italian“, or “Androgyny“… Notice you can browse by Oldest, Newest, or Most Commented.

I also love that the images are slightly larger than before – and we’ll  also have horizontal images that will be EVEN larger.

I want to thank Colorz for their artistry and patience, Cara and Anthony for pushing the project through, and Garance for her inspiration and guidance.

Please click everywhere, test the website, this is our space – and then come back here and let me know what you think in the comments!

    Hello,

I’m a Designer myself and I’ve been a dedicated reader for more than a year.

The Site now looks really pro and slick, thumbs up for colorz.

I like the new look. I like that it still has the clean and simple look.
At firt when I saw it I hesitated a little, but after I took a look, I think that it looks good, it looks more grown up.
Well congratulations it took a long time, for a while there I tough that you would not change the layout of the site, but well done.

P.s I can see the Garance inspiration and I really like what I see.

    All the best.

I love the new website. I like how I can see many pictures on one page when I use categories and the search bar. And all the pictures are so beautiful.

Love the new design, and it’s great how I can now browse a category without waiting for all the full-size images to load. In category browsing, it’s nice that it displays the post title when you hover over, but it would be even better to do this without darkening and obscuring the image.

Scott, I’d like to make a recommendation, could you think about making the comments section more of a forum, thread style? I think it would be much more interesting to get a discussion going about the looks that you post rather than static comments. I think it would make your blog a lot more fun.

    Hi,

I dont really like your new site. Im very sad that you changed it. Your old site was classic and it was so easy to see the pictures – now the main new picture is surrounded by silly words on the side and it’s not as clear anymore. I wish you would change it back! I notice that these are the ame people that did Garance’s site but they did a much better job in hers. It also suits her brand and work much more while you were more old school and that is what made you special.

Congratulations! I must say, the original blogspot will be dearly missed but it has paved the way to expanding what was already a clean, fresh and visual blogspot into an even bigger, better and brighter official ‘dot.com’! Looking forward to navigating around!

love the clean look of the new website… i find it very user friendly

only one thing – i’ve been reading some of the “style profiles” and noticed that the apostrophes are coming across as question marks.

i love the search options…. very easy and fun. also love that we still have the calendar month as a search option… often when i am in need of some inspiration i will peruse through, for instance, “august 2010″ “august 2009″ “august 2008″ to see what women were wearing, and am glad to still be able to do that

    dear scott,
to be honest with you , I prefer the OLD blog type structure…. To me It had that “non” contaminated too fashion corporative mood! now it is loosing freshness and it’s too “perfect”.
But still, your pictures are amazing and you always give something extra from the rest.
    well done!

    August 1, 2011 at 11:07 am

Scott, congratulations. Very clean, an easy, fast read. One issue: the relationship of the size of the masthead, the images, etc. to a computer screen, cell, etc. is slightly too large. Consider pulling it back a bit.

I love the new layout. But I mainly love the care, inspiration and curiosity that are behind the very spirit of the sartorialist. it’s so much not just about fashion. it’s about life and its multiplicity of expressions.

I thought I clicked on the wrong blog! I bookmark all of my favorite daily reads and they’re all in a certain order so I know which number is which blog. I couldn’t recognize it at the beginning but as I scrolled down (and up) I knew it’s The Sartorialist. I’m loving this new design so far because my “eyes” prefer photos to be on the left/ this type of layout. Can’t wait to explore the site, however, i do miss the centered old layout a bit.

  45. fraise

    August 1, 2011 at 11:15 am

Great to see the new site!

However… I’m the first to notice the jpeg artifact problems? Smaller images are being forced into a larger size that brings out pixelation. Your latest photo, which is larger, displays fine, but the older ones look strange. It would perhaps be best to adapt the front page image size to the photo, rather than forcing them all into the same size.

Keep it up, love your work!

I really like the new design in general and I’m not sure if this is something that can be fixed, I’d really like an easier way to go between pages especially within a tag, just simple next/previous buttons.

Congrats! For me sartorialist is like that daily break to check out fashion all over the world. Your new blog reads like a newspaper to my coffee :). But, to be really really honest, I personally loved the old blog type structure which was more clean (without those thumbnails on the side). Nevertheless, change is good! I’ll come back for sure.

Have to admit that I thought I hade mistyped or something when the page came up – only thing that I saw was the advert from net-a-porter on the left side (too big and too black!) I know advertisers are vital but pls don’t let it affect the visual experience we all get from your beautiful photos. Still I love how it’s easier to browse now. Going to Florence later this week and can’t wait to see all the fashionable people you have shown us:)

In my browser (Internet Explorer) the pictures look pixilated and the size of the pictures are too big to see it all in one view. Its messing with one of my favorite aspects of your site. I loved that the pictures were the perfect size and very crisp.

great refreshing change. it’ll take time to get used to, but the photos are fantastic, inspiring as always – just bigger! and the search is working great. I often wanted to return to a photo I saw and couldn’t find it – now it is easy.

    It’s OK

I like your choice of black and white contrast because black is always in fashion so you wont have to change the new look to even newer in one year.

I am totally grateful for Book Reviews! That’s a grate idea and I’m looking forward to further development. Once you asked people what were their favorite books on fashion. There were many re on this subject and I always thought that a list of titles or something like that would be very helpful. But I forgot when was that so I lost a way to that accumulated knowledge. Pity. Hope you could bring that up once again.

Thank you for adding searchable tags! Brilliant! Searching for an inspiring way to wear blue suit is not a problem from now on. But maybe you should ask someone to add more tags. I looked threw tags available and their not quite what I would like you to tag. Button down shirt, tie, gray suit, flowery dress, brown shoes etc Those are the things that I was always searching on Your blog. A different perspectives and approaches. So thanks for tags: Beach, Cuffs, Gloves, Grooming, Hats, Leather, Man’s Accessories, Old Man Style, Shorts, Summer, Sunglasses, Trench Coats, Trenches, Watches and White Shirts.

I missed Style Profiles! They were always so refreshing. People explaining why they wear they’re clothes the way they do.

Detachable comments are a life saver since photos got bigger. By the way thanks for moving them to the left and leaving right side big enough for comments window.

You were right. Title bars scrolling across photos are grate. I spent a minute just doing that.

Thanks for your hard work and congrats on bringing Sartorialist.com to a hole new level.

    August 1, 2011 at 12:53 pm

hmmm… not so sure …. I like the new functionality for searching etc. but miss the simplicity of the old site. In the past, I have checked into your site everyday more or less just to take a quick peek at the new images, so the main page layout is much more important to me then all the other extras. And I can’t say I like it too much. Larger images are too big for my laptop, so I spend a lot of time now scrolling up and down to get the full image, which certainly detracts from the image’s impact.

I love the general idea of this site–beautiful clean layout–but the size of the pictures means I can’t ever see the whole image at once. I have a 19″ monitor on my desk and a 15″ laptop. It’s pretty sad to have to scroll up and down to see a whole image–I can’t see the shoes and head at the same time!

  75. soso

    August 1, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Really don’t like that when you select the comments for an image you then have to hit the back button to get back to the main page. Also, detached comments, in my browser, (firefox), comments are randomly? highlighted in blue in the “detached” comment box when I scroll down the comment list using the down arrow button (WHICH is painfully clunky). Also, when you leave a long comment, at the end the comment content is cut off and does not display as you are typing … not expanding correctly.

I like the new scheme, but why the advertisements? It takes away from it all.

  110. Jenny

    August 1, 2011 at 4:12 pm

hm. well, there are things i like about the new layout (the easier searching of tags and categories and such), and i LOVE the “random” section to the right (it shows me great entries that i’ve missed).
but i think it’s a bit busy overall, and takes away from the photos. the old layout showcased them in a perfectly simple way, now there is a lot of stuff crowding the photos out.
one more thing, i find the ads on the right side to be more conspicuous and distracting, just because of the way the (western) eye reads left to right. my eyes settle on the ads because they are on the right.

Nice, this made me browse the archives some. However, some of the older posts (I assume) have several pictures in them, and the thumbnail that shows up in the search leads to a different picture in the actual post, and the one in the thumbnail is nowhere to be seen.

The new site looks clean and beautiful! However, I’m almost wondering if the photos are a tiiiiny bit too big (I know that’s a horrible thing to say). But when I look at the page on a standard laptop I can’t always see the whole vertical image. And while it’s not the end of the world, sometimes it makes it a bit harder to appreciate the whole composition. It’s possible that this happened on the old site and I just didn’t notice until you asked us to look at it. Great work!

I quit and come back when the defects on the site are repaired. Shall miss it.

    August 1, 2011 at 5:00 pm

I agree with some of the comments above – some of the simplicity that made the photos stand out has been lost. I suspect the site better enables you to earn money from it and why not – good for you. I also think the tags are great – I tried a few and liked Converse one. On balance – I’m still going to be an avid viewer. I have the Sartorialist gadget on my igoogle homepage and it’s always good when I see two or three new entries have come in (the gadget transitioned to the new site seamlessly).

    Two comments:

1- I use Internet Explorer 9 and the titles are not scrolling across the photos.

2- The darkening of the photo under the title is annoying and makes it hard to see what’s there.

    Otherwise, well done.

new site looks good, although the preview resolution is bigger than the actual resolution of the uploaded shots, causing images to appear blurred. i’m sure you’ll fix that though. part of the magic of the sartorialist are the chrystal clear images, after all.

I liked the old layout better. Now the site looks overloaded. I loved the simple style. Now it´s to much. The random post and twitter including ideas are very nice.

Hi, I like the new website, but there are few things that I have noticed.

    I find one thing little confusing, when I click at comments on the main page it redirects me to another page where I must click ‘expand the comments’ to see the comments. So actually I have to click twice to get to comments, it would be easier and more user-friendly, if you could make it to the comments in just one click;
maybe even on the main page there could be option to view comments (something similar to detached comments window) without loading another page and than clicking back to the main page and waiting for reload again to see next post.
and one more thing, photos, when I click on photo it loads a new page with photo in it, the problem is that the photo is in same size as the one on the main page, so that link doesn’t bring anything new to visitor, it’s a bit confusing, maybe it could load larger photo, or maybe it could even load larger photo in the main page, in form of new window (similar to detached comments window) so you could see zoomed photo and close it and continue to next post.
and just two more tiny details, in this comment input window, when resizing it the white background doesn’t stretch horizontally, just vertically so my text goes over gray area (this happens in firefox and in chrome too),
and little icons left from day and date above the post title need just a little bit more space to the right, the text is too close to icon, and same goes to the icons below photo, just little more space, the text looks like it’s bonded to the icon.

But everything else is great, and the big plus goes to bigger photos and of course the search part, nice. :)

    August 1, 2011 at 5:27 pm

Sorry, but I don’t like the new layout – it’s just too busy and the all white look is a bit hard on the eyes. I think the old look was better suited for a blog that is mostly pictures and not text. Also this new set-up looks like a cut-and-paste template that I have seen used on many different blogs so the look in not unique. Please change back.

  170. Annie

    August 1, 2011 at 11:34 pm

Congratulations! This new layout is great but I must say, I very much prefer the original.

There was something about the original layout that made the Sartorialist blog what it was. It was effortlessly simple, fresh, and clean with a hint of sophistication and class which made it stand out amongst the world of ever-growing fashion blogs online. I feel that this new take on the Sartorialist blog doesn’t have any visual signs or senses of personal influences from you Mr Schuman. That was what I liked most about the original. When exploring through the original blogspot and admiring the photos, I could feel more of a connection from behind the lense than from just the subject in the photo. This made The Sartorialist blog just that much more special to me as an amateur photographer. When I navigate through this new site I feel an absence of what really made The Sartorialist blog. To me, unfortunately it has become a mainstream fashion blog just like every other.

Please don’t take this feedback negatively, it’s just sometimes originality is better than change. I will forever continue to visit the Sartorialist but it saddens me to know that it just won’t be the same.

I’m not sure if my last comment successfully posted. I’ve been a fan of the site for years now. With that said, I hate hate the new header. A header should not take up half a webpage. Aside from being aesthetically displeasing it also means that I have to scroll that much farther to get to the content of the site. However, overall I like the increased functionality and overall look.

new site looks great and still simple. but one little annoying thing is when you get to a post, it loads the comment floater bar on the right but the scroll bar takes a second or two to finally come up, it’s kind of annoying to have to wait to scroll down

This was on Google Chrome web browser on an OSX

so far i love the site! i love the new searching features! the only thing is: i’m not crazy about the larger images because they are a tad too long. i need to scroll down to view the entire image instead of looking at it all at once (which i prefer when looking at a new outfit or complete look).

but overall i love the change, great work!

You’re really talented, really, you are, but just on suggestion:

Please do something about the image sizes. It takes an eternity for this site to load, and digitally speaking, this is a terrible user experience. They shouldn’t be this large! Or simply crop the image sizes and upload. Please DO NOT resize via HTML/ CSS.

neat features. Not liking the header. Loved the old one. Much richer looking. I think the font should be more stylish/rich. i liked the old one. agree header to big. i like beige/white/black. i thought old site was rich and timeless. But love most all the new features!

been exploring. under ‘women’ found Laipo Elkin? also under women, could not find one of my favorite women…50′ish/lean, looker/killa blue eyes/stunning white pantsuit/great short hair/sitting on a file folder on steps. Where is she? I loved her. Are some photos left out? or maybe i just didn’t try hard enough. also, looking back, i really miss your down-to-earth comments/opinions. Feels a little too slick /corporate at times without your insiteful or fun thoughts/input. I loved the way you started. And, Like so many, i would love to see more stylish older women. They are everywhere!

Love and thanks for all this work, Scott. As a huge fan, going through serious challenges, you tryly inspire me everyday!

I really like the categorizing and search functions. One change I am sad about is that when the page first comes up there is this MASSIVE ‘SARTORIALIST’ banner and I always thought the more subtle page header was so sophisticated and also left space for an exciting first glance at the days shots. BUt will visit everyday nonetheless. x

Hi, I’ve been following your blog since 3 months and I used to look at it every day.
All I can say is that the changements you made are great. In fact, what I love is the fact that the global look stays very clear and white. Our attention can’t be caught by something, we just look on your – beautiful – pictures.
Congrats for your excellent work ( what I prefer is the fact that the people you photographed are from all ages, and you make all of them look beautiful. :) )

Lovely the new design. I like the red touch. Makes it really frech.
The search function is amazing! The detached comments are a bit annoying, but obviously it’s up to the user. I at least could switch it off and get the classical comment-form.

Hello Sartorialist, Nice work on the new site. Just thought I should report a little bug I encountered trying to access the new site. Using Chrome on PC, if you try to access the homepage directly (either thesartorialist.com or thesartorialist.blogspot.com) you get caught in a loop as the site tries to access to the .blogspot.com url and then the .com url… ad infinitum. The only way I could get in was to go to an old bookmarked post url (eg the url suffix seemed to resolve the problem).

    Love your work!

When you make a search, and the search returns some posts, you need to click on “search” again to make a new search.
I think it would be nicer to have the search field in there all the time.

I like the layout and ease of use, but the bigger images are frustrating!! They don’t fit on my laptop, so its like looking at an outfit in a mirror that doesn’t show your shoes (I don’t own a full length mirror). Grrr. Well done, but in future it would be great for us on smaller screens to view whole outfit…. Thank you though – you are by far my favourite blog on the web. And I work in community outreach by the way. Nothing to do with fashion. Pure escapism…

I love the new layout, but the pictures are too big to see all in one go. You have to scroll down to see everything in the picture which prevents you from getting the full impression of the look.

    Otherwise, fab.

I love it. I also love the extra bits and pieces in the side bar… but… :)… there were two things that I didn’t ‘love’. 1. When you mentioned search bar I expected to see one on the hope page – feels a bit clunky to have to go to a new page just to search. 2. Along the same lines, the ‘advanced search’ box to the side. It takes you to the same page as the ‘search’ link in the top menu. Double up? 3. Many different fonts, colours, italics/bold going on . Oops that was three – but do love it still :)

Nice and slick look and feel, without losing the previous blogspot feel. Really good job. 2 comments:

    1. I think the images shouldn’t get darker when you roll (hover) over them. I like the transition effect, but I don’t think it gives the right focus feeling. Maybe it would be better if all the other images around it got darker and the one you roll over stayed the same.

    2. I like the orange bar sliding over the image when you roll over it, but i would prefer it to slide at the top or bottom of the image so you can still see what’s behind

The ‘search’ and ‘random posts’ features are really cool and helpful. Nice job once again

website looks clean, easy navigation, wonderful search results, however the main page header is too large, the font is too heavy. It is very ‘in your face’, and it takes up a lot of the space when the site first loads, whereas before one could always immediately see the most recent photograph. Thus, keep as is, except for the header. I will still visit regardless :)

Overall, this feels more like a fashion blog now. But I can’t quite get over the fact that the interface is too “lefty”; I feel like I am about to tip to the left!

Could the pictures be placed closer to the centre? This would make it easier on the eye and restore my sense of balance.

    That said, I’d still visit.

I loved the ‘roughness’ and simplicity of the old site. This new one has, in my opinion, lost some of that, but at the same time it has it’s highlights.

I love the new colors; so chic and fresh! Also I think that the new Categories make it a lot easier to navigate through your amazing photos!

    Hi,

Overall I like the new look, congrats on getting it up and ready. 2 problems for me though.

1- I had the same issue as Liv : if you try to access the homepage directly (either thesartorialist.com or thesartorialist.blogspot.com) you get caught in a loop as the site tries to access to the .blogspot.com url and then the .com url… ad infinitum, except I’m using Firefox on a Mac. It took me two days to figure out how to get here, but it requires me adding a ‘/home’ to the address.

2 Overall I love bigger pictures, but they’re just a teensy bit too big, meaning I have scroll to see the whole image, which takes away some of the impact of seeing it all at a glance.

    Keep up the good work!

  245. Carol

    August 2, 2011 at 2:34 pm

I like the clean navigation and the larger photo format. might be me but when I clicked the Comments icon, I was confused by having to click one more time in order to get to a link to enter a comment. seems like if you request comments, they should already be expanded with a form either at the top or bottom. otherwise I feel like it’s a more personalized site and more professional (although definitely not unprofessional before).

I’ve told a few people about it, but ussually they have to have a great quirky sence of fashoin other wise people just don’t get something as simple as like cloths, funk, color, texture. i think the new layout is very pretty! i miss the bigger photos though, but other than that, it’s so sleek!

i noticed a small bug though. the little comment box that pops up on the main page… it pops up normally then kind of sinks down so that only a sliver of it is visible. if i scroll down it just sinks again. barely a sentence is visible at any given time. i’m on a macbook pro using firefox browser. i checked the website on safari and the comment box doesn’t pop up at all, and i actually prefer it that way personally b/c the box is distracting, especially since it’s not really functioning well. hope that helps!! and congrats on the redesign!

just a few comments, and to start with the negative: the size of the banners are annoying, they really compete with your content.

    Hi!

Can you search for men/women pics from a specific city, say men from London – I tried to do this using advanced search but didn’t really work out because it showed me also pics where the text had the word London in it while the actual pic was taken somewhere else. So a suggestion to add this function – I think this would be a really cool way to quickly get an idea of style in a city.

    Hi!

Am in love with your work. Yours is the first site I read after checking out the news. I liken visiting your site to my daily vacation.

I love your new ‘look’! Excellent work. It’s just as fabulous as you! Thank you for investing in making our experience even more inspiring.
One small, teeny- tiny recommendation, however… I wish there was an option to register to receive your blog daily. Its very possible that you have provided such an option and I simply overlooked it (since I’m completely in love with – and distracted by- the layout and plethora of photos), but I just didn’t see it. Would you mind considering making that a more obvious option? I don’t want to miss anything! Thanks for bringing it to us every day! Your work is amazing! Thank you.

Amazing, just amazing!! Great job, Scott & Co! My favorite part is that the search brings up images instead of text links. Nothing worse than searching a website and getting results that are hard to navigate. Also thanks for today’s post about the RSS feed, I hadn’t changed mine!

  281. Geoff

    August 3, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Loving the new design/layout. Love the new search results page as well. Have noticed a couple of things that didn’t quite behave as I expected — did a search on Mr. Cortina (a style icon for me) and got back an awesome page full of outfit ideas; when I clicked on a couple though I got different images from the thumbnails. For example, search on ‘Cortina’ then click on the thumbnail for ‘On the Street…Tailored Tee, Paris’, I would think that I’d see that thumbnail image large but when I click through I’m only seeing the image of the girl in the tee. Noticed it on a couple other pages as well (but only when clicking through from search results). Hope this helps — the new site is really great, keep up the high quality work!

Hi. Though it’s a nice, crisp look, I can’t see complete images now. Must scroll. Impossible to get the full effect of the photos and the clothes. Aaargh!

  283. Liz S .

    August 3, 2011 at 11:12 pm

    Hi Scott
I love the larger photos and the simpler cleaner design but am finding it a little fiddly to get to the comments section esp when writing a comment. Also there is more scrolling. Too many clicks and scrolls sometimes makes you lose interest–but then maybe a comment isn’t needed if already said? And of course it is difficult to get everything just right and to please everyone.

  284. Simon Brown

    August 4, 2011 at 3:54 am

A very interesting update Scott. I like it.

The comment form is clever. It’s a little flakey in my old version of Opera, works fine in Firefox; both running on a tatty old G4iBook. The random pictures and related images are a nice feature. The search facility works really well.

Overall, the site feels very similar to that of a very talented young French illustrator and photographer I’ve been reading for some time.

My thanks for all your work on this site and the book, they’re a refreshing and civilised breath of fresh air.

    Be well

Have always loved the show, but now the only way to view the entire larger size photo is to scroll down. Maybe it’s just my monitor (not that small and not that old), but miss the impact of the complete vision.

  287. Emmanuel

    August 4, 2011 at 6:42 am

Congratulations for the new web site. I especially appreciate the random posts section and the search features. That being said, I think there are some potential areas of improvement from a technical point of view: 1. Sometimes, when you click on a picture on the random posts section, the separate comment window is automatically open which is quite annoying (especially when you scroll down)… 2. The upload of the pictures take more time that it used to… (I’m using Firefox 5.0)

Love the new site and how you tried to keep the same minimalistic layout of the previous site.

I do have to agree w/ some people who have mentioned possibly reducing the size of some of your images. I am on a 17″ iMac and I consider my screen large. (Resolution set at 1680 x 1050, which is pretty large already) But still some of the images on the site do not fit the browser.

hey, I love looking at the older posts but now I can only click on one photo, go back, click on anther photo, go back, etc. Is there no way to see them all by scrolling as we used to be able to do or maybe an arrow button? So if I want to look at July 2011 again I don’t have to do it photo by photo? My email address is andreasgarrett@hotmai.com if anyone can offer any suggestions. I would really appreciate it.
    Regards,
    Andrea

Sart, this looks better now…..either I have acclimatized or you have moved the pictures closer to the centre.

For that icing on top of the cake, images that are just a wee bit smaller (say 10-15%?) would allow for greater impact…..for maximum enjoyment, I would love to see the head(s) as well as the shoes of the subject(s) in 1 glance.

After browsing for a week or so, the pictures seem a bit too large for me. I work on a 13″ Mac Book Pro, and now I need to scroll down to screen to view one photograph. Command-+ brings a lot of comfort, but then the text is small… ah. (The search facilities are fantastic, however.)

    Hi Scott,

I love the Satorialist, but miss the old site. It felt less commercial, but what makes me sadder is that the new larger photos don’t display in full on my 13″ MacBook. It just lessens the impact of the photos, having to scroll up and down to get the full view. I don’t feel like I’m soaking up all that beauty now. I’m just so, so sad!

I know I’m not the first to say it, but yes, I read your blog on my laptop, and now I have to scroll to see the whole picture. I liked the old layout better, but I know why you changed. Don’t know if there’s a perfect answer.
    Good luck!
