These are my grandparents Pierre and Jeanine Lemmens. This was taken in the summer of 1950 on the Belgian coast; they owned a small clothing shop in Brussels where I spent all of my childhood… this picture makes me really proud.

thank you for this. some people just understand intuitively that how they dress today will somehow influence others 62 years down the road. you can see your grandparents, who may not have even been parents then, had a great sense of style and history. love and light, rv.

I’m surprised to see a zipper on a sweater that long ago. I thought that came in in the ’80′s. That skirt is very well made. I can tell that they owned a clothing store, there is such attention to detail in their outfits.

I like that M. Lemmens is wearing a casual shirt under his buttoned-up double-breasted jacket–it shouldn’t work, but it’s perfect alongside the rolled trouser cuffs and funky shoes. He transforms the suit into boardwalk-wear. This reminds me of Mr. Theodore’s comment about wanting to find a way to wear a suit for all occasions… (At least I think I recall his saying that.)
M. Lemmens also looks so much like my dad did when he was a teenager it’s almost eerie. But in a good way.
