A lovely series of memories. Even though they are someone else’s, now they seem like mine, too. I also have your site and all its entries for sparking my interest in dressing better and exploring the wonders of vintage clothing. Have scored a few times in the past few weeks in Manhattan and Massachusetts. Thanks for the inspiration.
Great picture! I barely remember people dressing up except that I had to wear a jacket and tie when we flew. People looked so put together then; they didn’t just appear to throw on clothes, and you didn’t have to be rich to do it.
Wow. A coat and tie and high heels at a park. It looks pretty, of course, but did they do this for the picture, or did they really walk around dressed like that at a park in nice weather? If someone were to do this today they would die of heat stroke. I can’t decide if thats a good thing or a bad thing. I certainly would not like to walk around a park in heels and a skirt like that. But it does look put together, certainly.
Lovely picture. I wonder if your MIL handknit the socks for her beau, there was something of a craze for girlfriends to handknit these intricate patterned hose in the 1950′s. If so he is wearing them with pride.
Love the shoes, the socks… and the tie! He clearly put a lot of attention into them… but not as much attention as he is paying to your mother-in-law, who is by contrast much more simply dressed. Very sweet.
