She’s got an incredibly cool attitude – partly to do with the way she’s holding her cigarette but also just how she generally exudes casual self-assurance.

Although you’ll probably get several comments from the politically correct the cigarette creates the whole mood for the picture. It’s a wonderful shot, probably just intended as a reminder of a day’s outing.

Grandpa did well for himself! She was lovely!
Oh, and no, its just a regular ciggy. No controlled substances here. She looks very bohemian, however.

Lovely shot. I love the grain (both film wise and in the photo). The light is also fantastic. It’s all very Mario Testino. I LOVE the vintage photos. Keep them coming.

She is lovely! Kind of face that is actually timeless. She could teletransport to NY today and still look normal. I like that she dressed up for a picnic.

I have always wondered on this fuss about cigarettes. If you look back at the most beautiful muses in cinema, they all have one in their hands. Glamour meant cigarette. I am not saying that it is good. But there are so many evil things about life, and people just ignore or pretend not to know them. Can you imagine the war without cigarettes? What would comfort them?

This is a wonderful shot. I love her hair. The smoke from the cigarette gives a cool mystery about her. The depth of field sets a great mood too. Love it. Your grandfather had a talent for sure.

Louisa H., Are you sure she wasn’t styled by the likes of franca Sozzani/Roitfield for a current Vogue editorial? She/ the photo have such a beautiful, timeless, soulful , sexy D&G vibe.
I just love that she is all dolled up, beautiful dress, heels on, sitting directly in the scrub grass! no need for a blanket, towel or chair. Just her thoughts and a smoke.
She had probably just organized, shopped for, cooked from scratch, packed, unpacked, cleaned up the entire picnic, all whilst looking like a million bucks.
Fabulous.

For me, I love the conservative dress of those times, the proper yet messy hair, the sensible shoes – yet the whole picture is quite naughty. Grandma had spunk, I dare say.
