Vintage Photo

My mother is pictured here at her wedding, right outside the church in Milan back in ’73. While scanning the pictures, I was amazed to see the similarities to color modifications you see in today’s fashion ad campaigns.

A suspended cinematic narrative moment merged with a snapshot. Fantastic spontaneous lighting, gesture, body language and composition. The colour appears the way it does because the dyes in 1970s films were unstable and here most of the cyan (blue) dyes have faded. Contemporary photo manipulators mimic this in Photoshop – as usual, what looks modern actually has a long history…

“… Like many things that look modern, it has a long story behind…”
    (cit. More or less…)
Doesn’t it remind you of Monet’s Woman with a Parasole, or, even more, Of Sorolla’s A walk on the beach?
I’ve always loved these women in white, they move me.

In the last few decades fashion is trying to reinvent itself. Unfortunately, in terms of shaping, there is nothing new to propose to the public, that’s why there are so many inspirations to the past.
