This is a delightful photo. They look a little like 1960s western movie extras, but then again totally real. I bet a very similar shot could be taken somewhere in the U.S. today.

As a grad student in Saint Petersburg, Russia, I was quite surprised to see this photo! I am an Arizona native and know the Bar X and this family. Amazing gentlemen. I appreciate this and your earlier posts highlighting the quality, workmanship, and pride that go into a cowboy’s dress. Thanks!

Hey great blog – the idea of creating a two-way dialogue about the world of fashion and its relationship to daily life is very interesting. Was doing some research on the exchange of ideas, the relationship the intermingling – and found another blog by a fashion hairstylist Nicolas Jurnjack who takes his inspiration from the world and reflects it back in fashion, and vice-versa is very interesting reading http://hairblog.nicolasjurnjack.com/

What I like about this image of ‘real life’ cowboys is how it upends common stereotypes – macho, aggressive, rough. The men seem calm, comfortable in their own skin. I imagine them as soft-spoken.

I have lived in Paris for 34 years. However, I am from Texas, and for me, these true cowboys are as elegant in their dress as the chicest men on the streets of NYC, London or Paris or Milan. Yes, they do each have their own personality in their choice of a snap-button shirt, cowboy hat and of course their boots.. There is a consistency in the choice of their jean….that includes front crease and the way it drops on their boots. Somethings should stay the same. Thank you for printing this, Scott, because I once read where you mentioned that you never considered Western Cowboy Dress very chic. Perhaps you have evolved in your attitude? Speaks well for you!!!

The guy with the glasses and denim shirt is killing it. I love how people always look the best when they’re wearing what they’re comfortable in. It’s not affected, it’s not outre, it’s simply what compliments their face, body and personality.
