The posture and the style tell that it is a teenage girl. The color of the cardigan and the stockings match and the hole outfit shows a good talent for composition. Looking at that picture I had to think about my mom.
She was 17 when world war II ended and she had to flee from her home county which was invaded by the Red Army and later became a part of Poland. She told me that these times where very hard and everybody had to struggle to survive.
I think, Lana del Rey plays with the style of past fashion eras. Maybe that is why the photo reminds you of her. When I hear Lana’s songs I always have to think about the TV-series Mad Men, especially the character of Betty Draper.
You have a beautiful mother. It took me a minute to realize that she and I are the same age, but I was never that well dressed. Thank you for sharing this photo. It truly makes my day!
One of my favorite vintage photos I’ve seen on your site, Scott. This is just amazing. The clashing periods and colors are superb. The mood is fantastic.

I love this! I was around that age (15) in ’72 so I’m feeling quite nostalgic. This image is timeless in that it could have been taken from the 60′s thru now. But her expression is so of the tumultuous late 60′s and early 70′s. A beautiful and wistful flower girl, though more worrisome.
If I had this as a family photo, I’d be tempted to have a giant art print made of it, maybe even on canvas. It’s just beautiful… the composition, the red shorts, her ruffled hair, all the textures.
The sheer jacket, the pop of red, and the modern attitude juxtaposed with the old-fashioned oil painting in the background and the formal bench made this a fantastic shot.
Wow I am amazed. this is almost a painting. from composition to color tones, it has a real dreamy feeling over it. Although it could be pulled out of a modern, current fashion editorial now… Beautifull, really.
Bellissima la foto, l’ambienazione, il divano ecc. Per quanto riguarda l’abbigliamento non si può non apprezzare il copri spalle, veramente bello ed attuale!
How strange, this photo doesn’t seem old to me!! Maybe it is her look but if you didn’t say is from the 70′s I would think it is a current picture. Really nice pic.
this photo is amazing….so timeless, like it could have been taken this week. your mother is beautiful and her look is so classic. i love her socks, the lace cardigan, her hair….lovely.

Wow! That is just wonderful. She is gorgeous. I love the high waisted red shorts, the beautiful sheer jacket, and those socks and shoes. Its simply perfect. Timeless elegance. And I love the way she has her foot pointed in that ballet way. She looks 17 years old to me.
Love the cream lace over the black top–that’s a truly beautiful combination. The photo & subject are lovely, too! But mostly this makes me wish I still had some of my cool ’70s knee socks. (They were the only thing we could use to add some swag to our Catholic school uniforms… so we worked it.)
OMG! This shot reminds me of my childhood. Almost every photograph (hundreds) taken of me and my sister we were perched on a bench under the rather stern portrait of our ancestor, Catherine Kimball (1745-1831). It is great to know other families had that same tradition. Thanks for the memories, Scott.
I like how mostly 95% of people comment on how your mother look like instead of just telling you that she is very pretty. No need to comment about the look the attitude, the clothes… she is just gorgeous.
It would be great to see photos of the sons/daughters, grandsons/granddaughters that send these in, to see what their style is like and how it differs to those in the photos. It would be really interesting to see what they get from their parents/grandparents!
