Vintage Armani

I’ve never seen a video of Giorgio Armani from when he was so young.

Watch Saturday Night Live, Season 18, Episode 12 (6 February 1993) — Armani appears as the Italian Prime Minister in the opening bit.

Anyone know the year of this Barneys spot? Before or after the edgy 1980 “American Gigolo” film? (Richard Gere’s character’s lush wardrobe there, was Armani’s big break into Hollywood and the US market).

    Though the promo’s style is dated . . .
    Giorgio is timeless.

That stare that he gives the camera is him just acknowledging what we fans have known all these years: he is simply the best mens designer to come along in 50 years.

There was/is a BBC documentary called “The Look” you’d probably like quite a lot.

Dated things can sometimes make one cringe. Great voice and visual and silly lines. LOL

Barney’s was so good in the eighties and early nineties. Alas, no more. Armani was as GW Strand posted, so cutting edge in conjunction with the film ‘American Gigolo.’ In fact the wardrobe was practically the star of the film. Together, along with Wilkes-Bashford in San Francisco and Maxfield in L.A., they reinvented American men thinking about fashion and having style. Thank you to the Pressman family, Tommy Perse, Jerry Magnin and so many more great American merchants with vision.
