It seems the Hotel Locarno in Rome is under a big renovation.  I booked it last minute when another hotel fell through so I don’t know a lot about it but from what I did see it could be one of the more beautful options for a cool place to stay in the real shopping district of Rome.  It almost feels like what a “design-concious boutique hotel” would have felt like if it were opened in 1910.

one of the lovely hidden spots in rome near piazza de popolo. hope the renovation retains the charm of it. and don’t mess with the birdcage elevator!

    Ciao,
Would highly recommend the Aldrovandi near Villa Borghese.
We stayed there last summer and it is great !

The Locarno has long been in a huge decline, so this is welcome news for the Campo Marzio. Let’s hope it doesn’t end up as glitzy as its neighbor across the Corso, the Hotel de Russie, or the Indigo-St. George on the via Giulia, or as tastefully modern but dull, the Palazzo Navona near Sant’Ivo. For years I’ve stayed at the Raphael, a stone’s throw from Piazza Navona, but the increasingly carnival-like atmosphere of the piazza leads me to look for alternatives in the area.

It’s a lovely hotel, that is also visited by locals for apĂ©ro. We last stayed there in November and the lounge had a beautiful open fire place all day long. I’m looking forward to coming back soon.

If you have not visited the “La Mirande” in Avignon – you should. It is an incredible place – a living piece of art. http://www.la-mirande.fr/#/en/galerie/

    Hi Scott,
We have stayed in Locarno once in the past and the only thing which let us down was the lack of working ac, but most likely they will get that issue sorted out in the renovation. Awesome decor & friendly staff, cant wait to give it another go.

Ps. It was a great pleasure to ran in to you accidently yesterday here in Firenze at Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella

    The perfect honeymoon hotel.
10 years ago Hotel Locarno provided the spot for the most perfect honeymoon.
10th anniversary we wanted to return but had to settle for Claridges instead.

I’ve been inside the Locarno once, maybe a year and a half ago, for an aperitivo in the enclosed garden space, and my impression was that the whole place had a feeling of very faded opulence to it – and somehow, the fact that it was a bit frayed around the edges almost added to its charm.
