I love when I find a book that investigates a particular scene or sub-culture. Beth Lesser’s Dancehall captures the Jamaican Dancehall culture of the 1980s with the same level of sincerity and curiosity that Brassai exhibited while capturing Paris nightlife in the 1930s.

In here dancehall music does exist, but people who listens to it don’t dress as well. I wish they did!

I must say, I’ve yet to hear of this book! You’ve definitely spiked an interest, though. Analyses of the creative cultures have always been spots of enjoyment.

You should see Dancehall now – it is a mixture of P Diddy bling and super-tailored suits. Email me for more.

It is nice to see that someone as influential as you have taken the time to feature culture from the Island of Jamaica. The styles here are great. But films like Rockers and The Harder They Come also capture Jamaican dress sense with dancehall / reggae at the heart. Jamaican’s are a proud people and even up to today clothing and dressing up has its place in our culture. Puma are benefiting from the Jamaican / Usain Bolt influence now in the same way Jamaicans popularized the Clark Desert boots back in the early 90’s.

Making a real proud Jamaican outta me. Dancehall style in the 80′s was much more deliberate and cleaner than it is now.
I’m sure the book does a deep exploration of where dancehall came from.
Greetings from Jamaica!

While the fashion is a lot of fun, the entire culture – graphics, language, food and especially the music – ska, rocksteady – is wonderful. Ever see a picture of Bob Marley pre-reggae? Great stuff. There is a Ian Fleming, James Bond connection as well.

I am amazed you took the the time to look at a small subcultural scene and i am happy I am of jamaican heritage and the scene now is way bigger than people really know and it has influenced many if not majority of r&b,dance, grime ,garage scene. The fashion is big and glamourous in a funky way , big dances now the women where ballgowns etc and no exspense is spared very massive scene I am actually trying to bring this to the attention of some of our top high flyers of fashion.

Even though, dancehall as a subculture, has changed a lot from what these photographs show, its remarkable the effort to point out these wonderful scenes. Sometimes fashion world shows us just one side of the picture, and we miss a lot of beautiful and worthy design and ryhtmic expressions.
