“These young gangbangers, slightly older than me, were dressed in the latest urban fashions– from beaver hats, playboys, Stacy Adams shoes, expensive leather and London Fog coats, Italian knit sweaters, to sharkskin and tailor-made pants…
They were profiling in parks, clubs, and street corners. Â This was the first time I had ever seen images of this nature, reflecting my generation… I immediately went home and claimed my mother’s Kodak Instamatic 110 camera and went to work documenting my peers.”

I remember the cover of the first edition: the two B-Boys in Times Square (spare me the pc, that’s the term); and having had a 70′s Bronx childhood, the book resonates with me– vivid memories of a budding awareness/interest in fashion and art. Of course, music was always in the streets and parks.

These pictures are so cool. Black culture in the ’70′s, (I’m guessing) was so ahead of its time. I love how sharp these dudes were.

tight shots man and nice of you to post this throwback. those were the days of FreshFests, WorldClassWreckingCrews, WBLS 107.5 in NY; KDAY am in LA, funhouse, NYC, BurningSpear, LA, fat shoe laces and whole lotta AquaNet hairspray and RightOn jheri curl activator gel!! (yikes! too much back in the day there!).

Reminds me of some of my uncles, aunts, cousins and older friends back in the day. So much style, so carefree. Sunroof Cadillacs on Vogues with the chrome grill and Flagg Bros. shoes. These be The Streets–Fist-picks and Afro-Sheen.

What will they say about the Sartorialist in 30 years???

i have the first one – superb in capturing american fashion during the emergence of hip hop as a culture and style. the ensembles and attitudes chronicled here have such an immense influence on where american fashion is at today – very happy to see a “remix” and that it’s featured in the sartorialist.

Haven’t yet checked out the images in this piece but used “Back in the Days” and “A Time Before Crack” in my college thesis work on sneakers as social currency. Of course conflicted about any possibility of glamorizing gangsters but with that disclaimer aside; those were folks with access to large sums of money and therefore more opportunity to have and wear glamorous clothing and party the lush life. (kind of like modern bankers in a lot of ways)
As for your work Mr. Shabazz, I really do hope that you are doing a book tour and or that you will be doing a university lecture in California. I would love to hear you speak to this. Dunno of (m)any photogs who were chronicling this iteration of Black popular culture and fashion in such a “man on the street” approach.
I very much appreciate the work you’ve made!
