This was easily one of my favorite images of 2013.   We were filming my bi-annual lunch video at a local trattoria when I noticed some of my guys were missing.  I checked outside and , sure enough, the Italians were out there in a little hive of  smoke, chatter and flying hands.  I didn’t think much about it at the moment but decided to take a few seconds to myself to review images in a quiet spot across the street.  When I looked up this is exactly what I saw!  I couldn’t have planned it better.

I love the image because it feels timeless and yet captures a very specific moment in men’s fashion.

Phenomenal photograph. I do wish more attention was paid to script when it is published though. I enjoy this blog, but typos diminish the experience somewhat.

Hey CMD! Thanks for reading, do you mind letting me know where you see an issue so I can fix it? My editor’s eye must be failing me…

Taylor, I’ve never noticed any semantic or typo errors on your lovely site. CMD is probably referring to we contributors. I was thinking only a moment ago that perhaps the illiteracies in the comments were a kind of funky Net cool thing (hilarious! not) and that I should loosen up and not let my Dr Sheldon Cooper mind want to correct everything.

Hey Taylor, I don’t think this was probably worth calling out in the first place, but it does look like there’s an extra space in the first sentence between the end of the first clause and the comma. Might just by my screen, but it also appears that there’s an extra space or two between the first and second sentence… I’d argue that it’s a little OCD to let something like this ruin a photography blog, tho :)

Okay, although no-one’s asked for it, here’s my opinion: I am not entirely impresses with the suit of the uomo with the soft mohawk. While I like the look often featured here of the turn of a cuff just above the ankle, there’s something about the proportion of this one that looks more like his pants shrunk in the wash. Perhaps seeing him from the front would show it more impressively? That being said, I enjoy this photo very much. The looks at the far left and far right are my favourites: Immaculate suits with utterly relaxed positions! Very Italian. (I think).

Dude, all he said is that it’s not to his taste. Just because someone is generally regarded as a “top sartorialist” or something doesn’t mean everyone needs to like it. It was a thoughtful comment, not a dig! The attitude that just because something is well-regarded/popular/etc. we all have to like it makes me crazy; creativity comes from bucking the trend and liking what you like, not what you’re told to like!

I think I remember this one and the party. Ever since I found your first book in Toronto at my favourite book store, Nicholas Hoare, now closed, I have loved your work. For three days I returned to the store looking at all the books and finally, because I could only afford one, I chose yours. Perhaps this Christmas, now in Vancouver, I can find the second one.

“…feels timeless and yet captures a very specific moment in men’s fashion.” Yes! Not so long ago men’s pants hems had to fall at a certain spot on the shoe. Right now they are short to show a bit of sock – or no sock, as the case may be.

Only to know the smells of the tobacco, the wool, the cologne, the leather, and the scents of the manly body would make this amazing amazing photo complete. The composition of these smells are as important to the Italian sartorialist as the cut and quality of cloth. To compare the male asian sartorialist strives to have no scent.
