This photo is of my Grandpa, Richard Waltham (on the left) and his work friends taken in the late 1930s. My Grandpa was a banker and in his spare time he was an artist and photographer. I am a fan of the tailored look, not only do they have a very interesting sense of style, but it gives you an idea of what it was like back then, there is a lot of depth to it, from the water on the road, the advertisement to the left of them and the crowd of people behind them. My Grandpas story.

This photo is fantastic. It really speaks "late 1930s" not only because of the styles, but based on their grim and serious expressions. It really tells a story. Fantastic.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the vintage photos you have posted, Scott. I often draw inspiration from the classic items worn by men of that era and it seems that some couturiers of today do the same.
Gentlemen, burn your board shorts and throw your flip-flops in an incinerator.
I mean, no, continue undeterred. It gives men like me an opportunity to stand out from the heaving throngs of mediocrity.

I was going through some of the fashion blogs i always visit, that includes this one, and i saw this picture.
I think it is really a good scene. Your grandfather is in it, the advertisement is in it to. But is it taken in UK? Who is the one talking the picture? Your grandpa is the only one looking at the camara….and are those his friends? I think it has a lot of fashion in it, with the trench coats and the hats, but it does really have MISTERY to.

I do like this photo and the details she pointed out the advertisement and the water.
I'm always fascinated by pictures like this, and of how people, like grandparents, looked young when you've only ever seen them as older versions of themselves.

This is fantastic. The 1930s witnessed some really major changes in fashion. The whole photograph is amazing, but I especially love the squared, pronounced shoulders and narrow waist of the jacket that the man on the right is wearing. Really great photo.

This picture blows my mind. So full of action and swiftness. I love the downcast eyes behind circular glasses of the figure on the right, and I love his almost-feminine silhouette. All of them look so sullen. Very beautiful.

Fabulous picture. I am sorry to say that the majority of guys dress sense today is by comparison woefully lacking. It is not that modern clothes don't lend themselves to style.( the classic jeans and white T) but that most modern men simply have little or no idea how to dress. Sad

I love looking at all these vintage photos – I have boxes and boxes of old images that I love pouring over. I'm quite interested in design, and take so much inspiration from photos from decades such as the thirties or sixties.
I like the movement in this image, and the way the three men both contrast and compliment each other.

80 years later, these classic styles still look good. You don't get the sense that years after they were asking themselves, "What were we thinking when we put THAT on?"
I do think it is sad that hats are now considered costumey or a trend piece. They are one of the most functional items during cold and inclement weather, and I wear headgear all the time during the winter.

i love how there's something slightly off with the fit (ie shoulder pads on the left droop a bit).

This is a fabric from south India with a temple border…. a very traditional design that is seen often in the Indian national dress 'Sari'.
