Here’s a poem that always helps me after the loss of a loved one:

When I die, I want your hands on my eyes: I want the light and wheat of your beloved hands To pass their freshness over me once more:I want to feel the softness that changed my destiny.

I want you to live while I wait for you, asleep, I want your ears still to hear the wind, I want you to sniff the sea’s aroma that we loved together, to continue to walk on the sand we walked on.

I want what I love to continue to live, And you whom I love and sang above everything else To continue to flourish, full flowered:

So that you can reach everything my love directs you to, So that my shadow can travel along in your hair,
So that everything can learn the reason for my song!

Everything you do now expresses how much your father meant to you. I’m a mother now; yesterday when someone asked my son what he wanted to do when he grew up, he said, “Make magazines, like Mommy.” Of course, he may do something entirely different, but I was so proud and felt so close to him for even entertaining the thought. Your father must have thoroughly enjoyed your work and talent because I’m sure it’s something he would have done himself.

I’m sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself and your family.

    Hi Scott,

I am sorry to hear about your loss.

I have read that men grieve for their father by participating in the activities that they used to do with their father when he was alive.

A very nice moving tribute to your dad. I hope you find comfort.

Losing a parent is a profound event. It takes time to process so I hope you will be patient with yourself and your emotions. Time does round off the edges a little bit. It was swell to see the family pictures, of course, so stylish.

When one thing that’s always been there, always been certain and in your case something grand and positive disappears it leaves a very cold hole. I’m very sorry for your loss and I hope that you can fill this space with the love you had for your father and the love he had for you. He’ll always be there for you because that’s what we all want when we leave. That our loved ones do not stop talking to us and keep on finding comforting even when we’re long gone!

Thank you for your blog. It is the first blog I'm reading ever. I came across it by accident, as I'm researching for an article on bespoke shoemaking. Just a week after stumbling upon it, I'm addicted… to both your images of real & ideal people and your reflections. "Style" seems to be just your medium, your lens, through which you say much more about your love for people, your passion for life, your curiosity about the way we as humans live, along with the essence of our longing to be accepted while we celebrate our own identity. Your vision is contagious and inspiring.
    Thank you again,

Nothing anybody says can make you feel better, but you must know that he isnt gone. Nobody is ever gone when they are remembered. The ancient egyptians knew this, they made their physical beings last for thousands of years, and we are still talking about them. Always tell stories about him, always talk to him, tell your children, and their children, and he will live forever. Life is precious, and our job in life is to never ever forget this. I hope to hear more about your father soon.

    Scott;
Please accept my heartfelt condolences. The old photos and your post are treasures.

Sometime very soon – maybe even on Father’s Day – please sit down with your daughters and Parcheesi or a set of Dominoes and tell them as many Grandpa Stories as you can think of. I have yet to find anyone who can put grief into perspective better than a child. In answering their questions they will both demand and provide you with the strength to say the words you can hardly bear to think, and they will pour tremendous love into that vast aching space your dad’s passing has made. Every story will deepen their sense of family and their own strength and identity. What he was – and is – to you, you are to them.

So sorry to hear of your loss. For some reason I can’t see the photos of your father on my computer right now – it just comes up as a big white square with a question mark in the middle. In some way that seems almost a fitting mental picture when someone passes away – the why, where are they now, what will this be like for everyone who knew and loved him. I know you will take his good spirit with you wherever you go and it will come out in your work and in your love towards your friends and family.

    Beautiful.
    Sorry for your loss.
    His life sounds amazing.

Nice to hear you are coming to Australia. Curious if you plan on visiting Brisbane?

While it would be nice for you to come to this city, I wouldnt bother if i was you. Melbourne and Sydney is where its at. And if you want a getaway, go to Noosa, Sunshine Coast -.-

My thoughts are with you and your family.

I doubt that I can say anything original but as a longtime reader—back to that day when someone said something obnoxious and you replied, hilariously, “Dad? Is that you?”—I just want to add mine to the heap of good wishes.

There is an honesty in your work that makes it unique, personal, in a way that does not belong to fashion photography in general; and it’s wonderful to see these pictures of your father, through the lens of another sensitive photographer. Thank you for sharing them. Shantel

    Sart,

So sorry for your loss… wanted to share a little something with you that might help during this difficult time… when I lost my mother at 18, there were so many people, family and friends offering they’re condolences, etc…. the mother of a friend said something to me that has always stayed with me, she very calmly gave a huge smile and simply said: “Don’t worry, honey, we parents never stop looking after our kids…she’ll be with you always.”

In a song that pops into your head, in a photo you’re particularly drawn to, in special moments, both happy and sad… take a moment, and look for the signs, he’ll be there with you always, smiling proudly at his boy, looking out for you and filling your heart ( as he already has) with passion and love.

Con mucho cariño desde Costa Rica,
    Lita Tresierra

How very open and honest of you to share beautiful remembrances of your father with us – thank you. You have my deepest condolences.

As a native, I have a feeling that you will find comfort and inspiration in Australia. Melbourne is particularly exciting style and design wise although we’re not often referred to as exotic – I think I like that spin.

Dear Sart, i left my condolences in an earlier comment but i want to tell you i have re-visited this post a number of times. i have not lost my parents but i lost my husband 5 years ago (he was 35) so i familiar with those feelings of over-whelming, indescribale loss and pain, like someone has reached in and pulled your heart out. i have read so many beautiful messages to you and they resonate deeply. i, too derive comfort from so many wise words. the other reason is i love the photos of your father, there is something about his hugely positive and vibrant energy that comes through the screen. He is not gone, he hasn’t left you, your sisters and mother, he is just somewhere else for a while he will remain very close to you and from what you say he’s probably feeling a little bit mad he’s not near a computer so he can write his own comment! you are very much in my thoughts and i hope you can feel everyone reaching out to you.

    Dear Scott,
My deepest condolences at your loss. I too lost my dad a few years ago & realized what huge shoes he left to fill. Interestingly, when he was alive, I always felt really independent in mind, ideas, spirit, style from both my parents. Now after he's gone, I realize that I'm a bit more like him than I realized. Your dad must've been really proud of the work you've been doing. Your blog entry is really beautifully done & a fitting tribute to a wonderful person.

I’m so sorry that you lost your dad.
What you said about your family struck such a chord with me, my father had a massive stroke last year and my family was together the next day from miles apart. That time together was somehow so profound, they showed depths I’d never seen. I’m so glad that your family are supporting eachother through such a hard time.

you will probably never read this, but in the 1 in a 1,285 chance you do…your simple, but moving post about your dad brought tears to my eyes. thank you. i too lost someone, a dear friend, a few weeks ago in a hit-and-run accident in new york and struggled to encapsulate it on my blog. it has shaken me to the core and i am still trying to get myself back on track. i didn’t know your dad, but from your words, he was a remarkable man and he will live on in everything you do. it’s still too early for me to believe anything good can come out of death, but in time i know my friend connor’s death will help all of those he touched live with more passion and gusto…and after the tears i smile to think somewhere up there i now have a loyal and devoted guardian angel watching over me. sending you thoughts from a stranger, mona

How incredibly moving, everyone's tributes and how they connect us all – through our loss & deep love for our fathers. Scott, I don't know you and didn't know your father but I, too, offer my condolences and empathy. I lost my wonderful, kind, brilliant, handsome & yes, stylish father, over five years ago – and yet I haven't lost him at all. He lives on in my heart, as clearly your father does in yours. He influences me all the time, and he is always with me.
I was lucky to have unconditional love from him, yet he'd let me know when he felt I wasn't fulfilling my potential, too. Creativity, and learning experiences, were valued over financial gain, and kindness, most of all. And my family is also two sisters and a brother – and we are bound by our love and support of each other.
He also left me with a photographic eye, and looking through his colour slides, I am constantly amazed at how we both saw the same beauty in our worlds.
Just as your father lives on in you, he also lives on in each person you capture in a photographic image.

I follow your blog from time to time, and am always so impressed by your unique vision. Today I checked in and found this post regarding your fathers passing. I have not commented before but felt moved to now. My father passed several years ago and, just as you described, it was not only a very tragic moment but one that truly helped me to understand the strength and love at the center of the family I was a part of, the one he helped build. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your Dad was an impeccable dresser and must have been a great person to know. I am always amazed at pictures of people in the 50s and 60s. Everyone had such personal style back then. Rich, poor and otherwise. And it seems like pride in personal appearance was a must. I even see it in my family pictures. Again, my condolences. I love your pictures.

A friend introduced your blog to me a couple of months ago and ever since, ive been following your blog and have been loving it. But before i become too shy and end up not posting the comment, i decided to take a moment and thank you for this post.

My father, also, is the best and worst critic of my work. He is the first person to check for updates on my blog and would navigate through all the comments with extreme patience even though he is not in the least internet savvy. I used to feel restrained in my writing/images due to this fact. Thanks for helping me understand my own father better. I now feel free..
