Question For… Camilla Alibrandi

Does wearing a backless dress and heels (like you did here) while shooting a men’s show make you feel powerful?

It creates a visual connection between who I am and what the others see.  It makes me feel safe and secure to think that others may understand me better through the image I put forth. For me, it doesn’t depend on who I’m with or what I’m doing; dressing in a sophisticated and feminine way is something too natural for me to detach from.

Is this how you typically dress for travel?

I had two black suitcases that day and was feeling nostalgic. I was going back home after two months of traveling around the world taking photographs.  I was wearing the black cape because it reminded me of someone I met during my journey, and would not see for a long time.  I wrapped gold enamel from the Chanel show a few days before, and twisted colorful silk threads through my braid to symbolize the route of travel, and the thoughts woven in between.

Very impressed with the ribbons in her braid. Rarely, is anyone able to display their journey physically. Everything is usually carried in the heart, beautiful!!

I really love how each detail has a meaning behind it, like how the threads through her hair “symbolize the route of travel, and the thoughts woven in between.” It’s a whole new way to look at dressing yourself.

It’s a slippery slope: a woman harnessing her femininity, as opposed to exploiting it; and she’s found that balance–I dare say.

One thing (among others) I like about these posts is that I suddenly understand that you’ve photographed the same people many times, but some of them look so different in the different photos that I would never have guessed they were one and the same person.

    January 20, 2012 at 4:38 am

    Whoa! The semantics of clothing.

Never thought about it in that profound a way. (the braid answer is amazing)

But I can tell you this. Whenever I go to a meeting and know that there will be male professionals around me (esp. older), I try to mix match femininity (eg. heels) with power eg. (sharp tailoring) just to make my point: “I am here, I am conscious of my age and body, I am serious and trustworthy, so let’s do business.”

    A big kiss from Greece!
