If you ask a man from Saratoga about Hawaiian shirts, he will tell you that they never go out style. Aside from the t-shirt, the most comfortable thing a man could wear on the street, form forgiving. I’d like to know what’s going to happen in the US come Labor Day! http://lordashbury.com
A few years ago, there was nothing more vulgar than wearing a hawaiian shirt and now they look amazing.
Our perception have changed. The fashion machine rolls on relentlessly….
I think these guys show how you can wear them the right way – as a jacket, or tucking it in to give it a bit more formality. In this summer’s heat, I think they are a perfect way to stay cool and still have a little bit of style about you. Oh, and I bet they aren’t considered vulgar in Hawaii…
All things can look good and bad. Anyone that whines about cargo shorts, or filp flops always being bad is just putting their head on the chopping block to be proven very wrong. And it also sounds snobby and childish. So maybe a lesson can be learned here?….. Ah. Didn’t think so.
“Anyone that whines about cargo shorts, or filp flops always being bad is just putting their head on the chopping block to be proven very wrong…”
Not sure if you are referring to comments I have made here from time to time, and don’t care either. FYI, tho, I don’t whine about it; I comment just like you do. If I am a snob to find flip flops and cargo shorts ALWAYS bad, so be it – THEY’RE HORRIBLE! Don’t see any lesson here at all – have a nice day!
Hooray, I’m so glad Hawaiian shirts are in style. I’ve always had a soft spot for them. Mostly because my dad has been sporting them on weekends for as long as I can remember. :)
I’m having mixed feelings about the Hawaiian (Aloha) Shirts. I have a feeling no respectable Hawaiian gentlemen would wear their Aloha Shirt in the manner either shirt is shown here.
I design prints for Aloha Shirts or Hawaiian Shirts. George Clooney wears one of my prints in The Descendants movie. It’s the navy blue shirt with white motifs first seen when he’s driving around Honolulu searching for his wife’s boyfriend.
All my life I have hated Hawaiian shirts with a passion.
I do like that in the first picture it is paired with black slim jeans and those boots. It is unexpected and cool. I still hate it otherwise.
In the second picture though, if it wasn’t tucked into that awful denim pants, it would actually be a nice combination with those bangles that echo the colors of the shirt and the awesome hairstyle that compliments his face. The background is also perfect as always. (What do you do? Do you carry people to a place where there could be no better background for your shots? Because I can’t believe that is a coincident every single time. I am jealous! My hunts are always where they should not be. It is like they do it on purpose to bother me. lol)
Worn correctly, Hawaiian shirts can lend charm to almost any look. I’d probably opt for the shirt worn by the gentleman in the last pic – prints on black tend to lack that summery appeal that many of us want.
It’s really depend. For instance from where I am right now it’s really the typical Camisal that you have to got in your closet. But I know an other town where a lot of people will fix you with strange eyes because you should wear something more classical. So …
Looks particularly cool with the lighter pants.
Possibly because the shirt then reads more abstract, rather textural, being that together with the light jeans, it all looks washed out.
Prints galore! I think prints is one of my favorite fashion trends. Any prints actually but most of it was the Hawaiian/tropical prints and also digitalized prints. It’s not always easy to get the best prints, the colors and the images must be right to avoid tacky-ness.
Love it!
I want ALL THE HAWAIIAN SHIRTS. Portugal has an embarrassing lack of hawaiian patterns, and I want them so bad. The closest thing I got was a tropical flower pattern men’s shirt I bought in Portland while I was in the US. I miss the US :(
I prefer combining animals and plants. Toucans, big leaves and flowers. Printed shirts should be true to the spirit of the organisms. http://www.spottedhat.com/node/42
Being from Hawaii, I rather adore them.
On Fridays, we refer to it out here as “Aloha Friday”
The working crowd can usually be seen sporting perfectly ironed Hawaiian print clothing – all day at work and of course rolling in for happy hour :)
But really, any day is a good day for Hawaiian print.
I rarely see them adorned in such a stylish way, personally, I’m pleased that the fashion world is “trending” it. If I were in Berlin and saw a man wearing an Aloha shirt (anyway he pleased) – I’d be pretty stoked!!
Excellent, I’ve had my Hawaiian shirt on none stop since I bought it at the start of summer, I just blogged about it and then your post popped up in my feed….must be bang on trend!! xx
I love your rss feed. Look so forward to reading it. Just ordered both of your latest books on Amazon. I lived in Hawaii for 8 years and have a lot of aloha shirts.. Thanks for the hours of pleasure I have received from your website. Bob
Not sure if I’m on board. A tucked in hawaiian shirt without a belt? And he’s not trying to be ironic? A rare few can MAYBE pull this off, but I’m wary of it as a broader trend. I dunno, I guess people were saying that about camo a year ago, and I finally got on board with that.
I’m sad that due to souvenir shops’ cheap tacky versions, Aloha shirts have such a bad reputation. I don’t think it’s different from any other item of clothing, if you can make it work, then why not?
I must agree with CwC. I think they get their bad rap due to cheap fabrics and ugly patterns sold in sovenir shops. I have one I occasionally wear on very hot days from Polo Ralph Lauren. It’s a beautiful timeless print with shades of green, shades of bule & strong pink on a black background. It would be equally beautiful as a fabric in a Palm Beach sunroom or a caribean get-a-way.
Anything done in good taste will look good but wo’s wearing it, appropriateness of place and occasion is another factor.
They look great… hehe, and no, I don’t agree with Homer Simpson and his “There’s only two kinds of guys who wear Hawaiian shirts: gay guys and big fat party animals”… :)
I can’t stand them because that’s what older men wear ad nauseum in Florida where I live, but I must say, the second picture is not as “hawaiian” and looks good with the bangles.
The second picture is definitely better than the first. The first one looks like he’s trying to hard to make the shirt work. The second one works because he looks comfortable in his wn shirt, plus it actually looks like he belongs in the shirt (although I’m not sure what ethnicity he is). In general I would gravitate to the second shirt just because it’s a little more tastefully done.
Growing up in Hawaii, we preferred to call them Aloha print shirts. And in my opinion, when it comes to Aloha print shirts, the quality of the print and material is commensurate to its fashionability; which could probably be applied to clothing in general. A well-made shirt with an appealing pattern, made of natural material will always outshine a tacky rayon version… unless you’re going for that kitschy look.
It doesn’t help that the stereotype of what a “Hawaiian shirt” is has soured their appeal, and movies like Office Space have added to their disdain, but because they’re a part of my culture, I love them… especially the ones that remind me of the shirts my father used to wear.
Hawaiian shirts Ugg boots…
It gets people talking and proves yet again that the most important element of style is CONFIDENCE!
PS: George Clooney was HOT in “The Descendents”. Not buffed-best angle-flattering light-hot but classic real-life hot. That’s what sparked this renewed tropical shirt trend!
Dale Hope who wrote The Aloha Shirt:Spirit of the Islands also directed the United States Postal Stamp project to have The Aloha Shirt postcard stamps printed. Each stamp image was taken from a photograph from his book.
He was the art director who commissioned my studio to design the shirt that was seen on
George Clooney in The Descendants. It took 6 months to hand carve and hand print inks onto paper in an old converted carport -turned art studio in Kailua, Hawaii.
Dale Hope is,in my opinion, the force behind the renewed interest in Aloha Shirts.
George Clooney did seem so real,so vulnerable, approachable , in his role as Matt King.
Three points: 1) The Aloha shirt should never be worn with a T-shirt–that dilutes the statement. 2) The Aloha shirt should never be tucked in–that goes against the free-flowing spirit of the garment. 3) Like jazz, not all Aloha shirts are created equal. They range from the beautiful to the hideous.
It all comes back. These are the clothes I wore in ,… let me think…
1975 We bought them secondhand at a store called The Salty Dog.
It was the beginning of the oversized look.
Finally! I’ve been wearing them since a couple of years now and i’m 29. I used to get weird looks and I still do…but Its part of the reasons why I enjoy wearing hawaiian shirts.
I think a confident man can wear anything as long as he feels good doing it. Same thing with pink and other pastel colors back then. Remember Miami vice? ;)
Fashion is just that fashion, it comes and go. I wear what I want, when I want… I don’t care about someones opinion on my clothing taste.
Cheers and rock your Aloha shirts if you feel like it.
Beautiful shirts on both gentlemen. I love the hair on the second guy. He looks absolutely great. So interesting I would expect the first to look good, but the second is even better and it surprises me.
Aloha Shirts commonly known as Hawaiian Shirts originated in Hawaii. It truly represents beach lifestyle and theme of Hawaiian Shirts dates back to centuries
those dudes do no pull off the aloha shirt well at all. Also those are the ugliest aloha shirts i ever seen and the whole style the models have with it just dont vibe well. Though some people pick more earth tone or a more simple patterns because its easier to match and not looking like a tourist stop sign. Aloha shirts are worn only tucked in when doing business. Aloha shirts are comfortable a lot of people on the island wear them but not the polyester crap with plastic buttons and stupid colors. and people shouldnt try to wear them and force it to be a tuxedo.

Beyond the Hawaiian print, I love the ease of a short sleeve button down shirt. Talked about it in my blog entry : ashleyweston.com

That ronin-esque hairstyle is bad ass !!
To me, Hawaiian shirts only ever look good on dark, tattooed, genuinely tough and dangerous gangster types.

those dudes do no pull off the aloha shirt well at all.
