On the Street…..Window Shopping, Paris

For me, these photographs highlight the under-appreciated relationship of outerwear to shoes (and bags).  For several months a year, except for the people we work and live with, this is how most people see us.

I agree! My eyes were immediately drawn to the coat, bag and shoes. It’s amazing how the focus of an image can alter how we perceive it!

Great proportion play in both shots, too. I’m especially loving the generous cut and length of the first coat.

I absolutely love how much the first picture reminds me of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The coat looks so chic, yet so effortless. An her hair works beautifully with it, and those shoes….

    Wonderful pictures as always, Scott!

I constantly find my willingness to take a photo of a woman in particular affected positively or negatively by the relationship of her bag to the rest of her wardrobe. Is this bad?

The top photo could be of my mom, short of those earrings (my mom prefers gemstones or burnished silver if she’s wearing larger/costume-y earrings). Love both shots as inspiration to work with pieces in your existing wardrobe and then set out on foot for new pieces!

Wonderful contrasts in similar fashions: The lady in the leopard-print loafers is sans scarf to balance-out the exposed ankles; the other lady matched her scarf to her bag. They’re both fabulous.

That’s absolutely true Scott! Outerwear and to a lesser extent shoes and bags are what most people see in a person, thus is a crucial element of one’s outfit. I adore the first woman’s picture oversized tweed coat, as well as her cool earrings and sunglasses; effortlessly stylish.

The style is almost secondary for me (though the first photo is chic embodied). What I love about French culture (and Italian as well) is the collective cultural habit of window-shopping. We don’t have that in the US, but in those countries, stores put extreme care into the design of their window, so that they are beautiful. I love to window shop in France and Italy because it brings real pleasure. That is why these photos to me evoke so much style and taste.

So true. Especially when some of us (guilty!) wear the same blah, black down winter parka because we can’t stand the cold. It’s not the case this year, but some winters here in the northeast last from early December right through April.

That is so true. For any Mother who does the “School Run” each day, a fab coat and interesting shoes are essential. Here in sunny Esher, UK, we all wear Converse trainers and navy blue pea coats with interesting SCARVES, also an essential. Perjaps we should smarten up on the shoes.
