So many contrasts and contradictions! Beautiful – I like her look a lot. Even with a cigarette in hand.

Agree. Not sure why everyone is going apeshit over her look. This is a great photo of a very bad look.

      July 21, 2014 at 9:25 pm

Except that she is clean, wearing a tidy, new looking dress, and nothing she is wearing looks worn, torn or otherwise in disrepair. I can understand you not liking the design of the dress, or whatever, but your calling her a nasty name like “dirt ball” for no reason is a real head scratcher. I wonder how you would feel if people looked at a picture of you and insulted you for no reason.

Amo il suo look. Mi ricorda dei film italiani degli anni 50. Lei ha un look maturo, Soul. Nessuna vergogna. Feroce e vulnerabile allo stesso tempo. Il suo vestito è sexy ma modesta. Lei è molto naturale.

Love your work – until I scroll down to see the cigarette in so many hands.

This is a dangerous, destructive, invasive habit that cheapens your art. These people are posing for you so you do control what is shown. Why not just put the cigarette off to the side for a moment and take the shot? Either that or show one photo a week of what a 30 year smoker looks like?

Smoking is not and will never be cool or desirable and you seem to be one of the only people who fetishize the habit. Please stop.

People who smoke have rights too. Including the right to be photographed WHILE smoking.

    • Martine

      July 21, 2014 at 9:40 pm

Its kind of funny but I saw a poster recently, with the caption “Smoking is NOT cool!!” Below the caption were Winston Churchill, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Albert Camus, Jimi Hendrix, James Dean, Marylin Monroe, Che Guevera, John Wayne, Edie Segewick Kurt Cobain, Robert Dinero, Clint Eastwood, Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison, Ann Dvorak, Sophia Loren, David Bowie…. all enjoying the living heck out of a smoke. I tell you I am a lifelong non smoker, and would probably choke if I tried to inhale, but I just about ran to get a pack from the nearest store….

I don’t agree. Smoking is a bad habit, but censoring is worse than smoking anyway. Taking a picture of a real life moment does not mean supporting everything about it, and a stylish look of a girl with a cigarette does not mean smoking is stylish.

The cigarettes don’t bother me as much anymore because there are too many vices to criticize, so why bother? Those who don’t like the high visibility of cigarettes in Scott’s photos may drink alcohol or over-eat, so does that make them any less self-destructive than the smokers? I love my vices and they are none of anyone’s business. When one leaves the US one sees so much smoking and drinking, the culture is so different everywhere else. It just is what it is. It isn’t our business to tell others what to do. It’s not our choice.

So tired of all those on their anti-smoking high horse. And I am a non-smoker.

Seems like she has great knees to be holding that pose so well. I’m quite envious…

  35. LIZPR

    July 22, 2014 at 10:13 am

There’s an edge to her (as opposed to the term “dirtball” used earlier. Whatever.). The roots, the circles under the eyes, cigarette, heavy shoe … all have a “darkeness” about them, but her dress is cute, young, and flirty. She’s an attractive young woman who probably had a great time last night.

I think she barely wears make-up, does she? There is a glow in her face that would be destroyed by those layers of cosmetics.

This photo challenges my notions of beauty. I can’t get on board with the cigarette because as an ex-smoker, I can vividly imagine the smell surrounding this woman and it’s not appealing to me. But what really interests me is that while I haven’t worn makeup in years and am still trying to embrace my 2nd and 3rd-day unwashed hair….I find myself seeking polish and perfection in these photos. So I can’t love this look, but I feel like I should.

She just looks so unhealthy to me. I like her dress but can’t really appreciate it. I’m too distracted by the smoking, the dark circles under her eyes, the ruddy skin tone, and just the look on her face. I was surprised to read all the raves in the comments.

    • Chiara

      July 27, 2014 at 5:11 am

Unhealthy? But where do you live? She has just a simple natural look! Very nice! Make up usually is the “fake”… you generally don’t see unhealthy in a “fake” look because it is hidden away. This is how people are, walking freely on the street, without make-up.. Ruddy skin because it’s probably hot in Milan? Oh well, we always ask for NATURAL and REAL LIKE and complaint when it is too far away from reality and when it is close to it…we are scared. Pity I guess.
I don’t love this look, the dress is not my favourite choice but still I cannot say unhealthy….I cannot imagine if she had tattoos on..

I like her hair, and to everyone in the comments saying how “dirty” and “unhealthy” she looks: please look at less pictures of photoshopped & make-up covered women. This is normal. Everyone has varying skin pigmentation, etc. She is normal.

This girl reminds me of some of my friends during our 20s. As exciting and disappointing as life can be, some young women choose not to watch life through a mobile screen but to embrace it till dawn.

Not a scrap of make-up. She looks incredible. Effortless cool. You’d wanna be in her gang.
