I love seeing ladies wearing regular length sportcoats again.
Please, no more of these tiny, short-waisted jackets that every corporate attorney wears. I saw a great women’s jacket (a suit actually) at the Marc Jacobs show last night and it looked so fresh. It was a DB with deeeeep back vents (my passion) and a firm shoulder- I’ll post a shot of it tonight.

I'll admit when I first started noticing "blazer" were coming in, I resisted. I probably don't look too romantic in them. HOWEVER, I am slowly warming up to the idea, as it does feel fresh right now, and versatile. And this beautiful shot of this gorgeous lady really puts me in the camp of converts! LOVE the stripes, the skinny belt, and the blast of bold red lipstick. And smiles, what a delight: always in style.

Hello there.
You know what I would much appreciate? Some amazing advice from your wonderful self.
When you go out to snap shots of strangers, do they all let you? How do you address a person? What do you say to get them to allow you to photograph them?
I would like to, but I'm not that ballsy just yet.
I love this post and I think your blog is incredible.
Please check by mine. I have seen your blog title everywhere, and to have feedback from you would be very nice indeed.

I really think it depends on the fit of the blazer and the ampleness of the wearer. If you have hips and a butt, it's not easy to find the right jacket. Lot's of women wear the shorter jackets because they may have a smaller waist in proportion to their bottom half and want to emphasize that smallness.
I personally thought the DB suit was awful on the model, it overpowered her, which made me dislike it immensely. Now the three piece suit. LOVED IT!

In a world where femininity has come to be equated with fake breasts threatening to break free not only from the garment, but from the owners' own body, it's refreshing to see this reminder that we don't need to be over exposed to be stylish and attractive. The greats knew this–Coco Chanel, Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Babe Paley–and used this to great effect. She looks self possessed and comfortable in her skin while still showing some style. Well done.

Lovely photo, as always. With respect to your commentary, do you mean a cropped jacket when you say 'short-waited' jacket? And may I ask respectfully why you've busted on corporate attorneys? Having many friends who belong to that profession, I have to say that there is nothing wrong with conservative dress in what sounds like an ultra-serious and conservative business. For that matter, aren't designers guilty of fashion faux pas for continuing to design cropped jackets? Including Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Sonia Rykiel, Brioni and Miu Miu? There shouldn't be rules in fashion. A cropped/short-waisted jacket can look wonderful on some just as a longer waisted jacket can completely overwhelm another.

A different statement and utility from this kind of look, but very flattering and useful in you're a corporate attorney, or any kind of grown-up, who wants to look professional and also like a woman. A girl's wardrobe is not a zero-sum game, dear sartorialist.

I totally agree with this comment:
"I've never cared for those "shrunken jackets" that have been around the past couple of years. Tall women look dorky in them. Give me a good old blazer like this one any day/any year-don't care if it's 'in style' or not."
As a tall 50+ woman, my best source of great-looking, longer, vintage jackets is a local charity boutique. Your inspiring blog helped me realize that clothing that fits & flatters me does not have to be brand new to have style.

Me too, totally agree that longer jackets are back again and work better for the casual/sporty style. Short length jackets can be ultra feminine, but I most prefer them worn with pencil skirt and very slim, but not each woman feels confortable or can wear that. So glad to have the blazers back, AND sholder pads!

Oh yes, I scream to the mountain tops. Yes! She is perfection. Nice to see a young one so well put together and completely uncontrived. Although I am sure she did carefully put this look together, this would go unnoticed by most. To me, her looks has the slightest 80's "relaxed couture" look to it. Love the skinny belt left to hang down. Perfection! I spend a lot of time looking for men's type tweed jackets, love them. You are right about the Jackets Scott.

Hi Ali,
Pretty sure the belt is J. Crew's equestrian belt, which just went on sale for $29.50. http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/accessories/belts/PRDOVR~19170/19170.jsp
J.Crew also did a very Chanel inspired blazer, the herring bone school boy blazer, black with cream trim. I have one and love it (and if you can find one in your size, I think those are also on sale now.) I will never be able to afford Chanel, but I love to pretend I'm channeling Ms. Coco now and then.

This is a lovely shot!
Her style is so perfectly comfortable and stylish; it looks like she's Marlene Dietrich's granddaughter or something. The red lips make the cherry of the cake!
I totally agree with you as well about the regular length jackets; it feels so much more stylish when every teenage girl in town has a silky waistlength jacket in their closet.
There's nothing more cool than a woman in perfect 30s/40s hair, a blouse with a tie or scarf, a vest or knitted cardigan, high waisted slacks or a long pencilskirt and on top of that; an open regular length sportscoat.
I get chills all over!
