London street fashion is way over the top right now. Â Over the top in color and over the top in referencing the 80′s and 90′s. Â I really think the is one of the best “looks” I’ve seen here so far because of the simplicity, subtlty of the color, and pattern and texture mixing.

Well I guess it depends what you call ‘street style’? I don’t think all these people outside Sommerset House qualify.

I agree. The emphasis on colour is no doubt due to the dreary and depressing weather we get here where there seems to be no light for the whole of January. Why would we want to wear grey/black/navy when that’s all we wake up and see? As for ‘street style’ ~ These days Sommerset house while LFW is on is not the place to find it. Why not try London Bridge, Soho, Tooting Bec, Leytonstone, Maida Vale, Pimlico?

But she’s outside Mansion House at Bank tube, many miles from Somerset House
Isabella
February 19, 2013 at 2:40 pm
I agree. Sommerset House during LFW atracts editors or fashion enthusiasts, none of which are dressing as they would if it was not fashion week. Street style is what people wear in their daily lives, reflecting their characters and personal styles. Besides, Somerset House is not the equivalent to London.

I guess all that matters is what the owner of the blog thinks is street style. I think anyone going about their business on the street qualifies. I don’t see any need to prune according to where they work.

The OTT street style in the UK right now is a reaction to how incredibly crap the weather is here in the winter. Sure, the Eastern part of the US is covered in snow, but at least the sun comes out afterwards! And you’re right…this girl is getting it right, to be sure.

It’s interesting to use the phrase ‘over the top’ – I can’t help reading it in a slightly judgemental way. To me it’s similar to saying ‘too much’.
My view is it indicates something less objective than that and that those that are rocking that look in the UK are merely out of step with what the fashion mood is currently elsewhere.
Vive le difference!

February 18, 2013 at 5:04 pm
I agree. I read that as “London fashion is terrible right now but look at this girl who fits what I think is ‘right’”.
Fashion is subjective, and what seems over the top to one person may be subtle to another. Not to mention the cultural differences. London has always been more eccentric than the other big cities. It’s just our “thing”.
Sorry if you think it’s OTT, but Londoners will keep going over the top regardless of what other people think.
CCCC
February 19, 2013 at 4:26 am
you claim that London is always over the top, but are bothered he is pointing this out? if London is always over the top, then those who are not from there would obviously gain this opinion after visiting, that it is over the top.
lil
February 19, 2013 at 9:56 am
but he says it in a negative way, yes it is over the top, and maybe it isn’t his taste but that doesn’t make it bad taste
Martine
February 20, 2013 at 7:48 pm
Well its HIS OPINION that he is stating. I don’t think Scott is putting out the idea that everything he says is law. I DO know what he means however( even if I don’t quite agree) so there must be a point in there. He isn’t claiming that everyone will think so. He is simply saying to him this is the one of a few people who dress with the restraint HE likes. Whats wrong with that?

I’m very curious to know if all those who come in their pants watching some horror and lavish in hysterical praise, they would dress that way.
In this particular case, I’m referring to the shoes, which are really ugly without any shadow of doubt.

February 18, 2013 at 1:54 pm
Fashion week street style has become over the top in general, ridiculous in my opinion. I therefore really appreciatie that you concentrate on people who obtain both simplicity and authenticity.

actually, i *do like it. the bag and the shoes…somehow are a great marriage. shoes harken back to 80′s creepers in the East Village, but more colorful. bag reminds me of a cross between my funky grandmother’s clutch bags in the 60′s (those beads!) and…the ethnic beaded seat covers (again, those beads!) that some NYC cabbies have in their taxi cabs.
i’m loving the return of the color chartreuse right now – and with that sublimely textured brown coat, it’s a perfect glimmer of ‘edge.’
one thing i think that the english do is not always aim for “sexy” in the sense that americans usually do…and it seems to free up their sense of style and risk-taking a bit (the “dressing for themselves and not so much for others” part)

I definitely had the same thought about London street style when I was at an electro festival there last summer – I was overwhelmed by all the neon, cropped tops, high tops, big hair, fish net vests…way too much 80s for me, but definitely fascinating to observe!
