I get emails all the time saying “Oh, it’s so hot where I live, how can I ever dress fashionably when it is too hot to wear clothes?”
Well, to me this photo is the essence of summer fashion at its hottest. Bright colors, fun accessories and easy hairstyles: summer style can be as easy as a few special pieces.

I think that this girls is that person. And it is not just because of the dress which by the way is gorgeous. It is also how she has her hair, the a ccessories on her hand the drink that she has.

this dress it beautiful in color and cut…almost too lovely for the daytime but the stylishly messy hair and the chic, flat sandals make it work.
as for the people who are unsure of how to dress fashionably or stylishly in hot weather…trust your imagination. most of great style comes from a willingness to spend the time to find/try out what works best for you. fashion on the otherhand is what designers present and then you pick from the collection what works best for you.
trust your imagination. know your audience. go for it. if you get it wrong, try something different.

I would like to ask another question: How to wear when it's really cold? I haven't seen any pic's on your blog, when it's -20 or more. It's kind a hard to look good when you need at least three pairs of pants to feel warm enough.
And here in Lapland that kind of weather is really common at the winter. Then is hard to find women with leather stilettos.

That dress is amazing. First time I could see myself in a very long dress.
If anyone knows where she got it from, please let me know!!

This is amazing – I am based in Asia (where it's hot and sweaty) and have been looking for the perfect summer dress… you seem to have found it! Let alone the killer pair of shoes. Love them!

Very cute but not such a viable option for us bigger gals. Shapeless dresses are not always in fashion.

I have a different question: What should I do with my summer clothes if the summer is too cold and rainy to wear them?
But I love the picture!

Great- so now we know how to dress if we are
a. skinny
b. can walk around without a bra, and c. don't need to go to the office.
Indeed, a great achievement.
I now dare you to find a girl that represents the "essence of summer fashion at its hottest" without being any of the above. And then tell us that summer style can be easy.

It's very similar to a Lanvin dress from the SS 2008 collection.

I'm probably going to be the only one to say this but I think for very hot days dressing in white, blue or green are the colours that are cooling on the eye… and this transposes to your heart rate to calm you down.
Whilst I adore this dress and it's flowing look, its fiery red colour would only make me want to look away when I'm sweltering in a high rise cityscape.
Same goes for planting in a garden–a cool lot of blue or white flowering plants amongst green grass makes you relax on a hot day. This is why pools and the ocean is also so cooling/relaxing to the psyche in summer.

To Annon 4:18 First of all, its not possible to find one picture that encompasses all figure types and all occasions. This woman is certainly pretty, but she is not a supermodel. What she does have is style. And its the IDEA of her outfit that is so universal. NOT the outfit itself. You could go anywhere from a lunch date, to shopping, to a playdate with your kids. Even to many offices, if you threw on a cover. I'd bet a nude or white shirt or crochet shrug would be great. As for work in a conservative office, well that is simple. You wear much the same thing winter and summer. They are airconditioned for a reason. Then, as soon as you can get out of the soul killing environment, put on a summer dress and sandals. SIMPLE.

Ok, my response:
The poster stated three things that he considers the "essence of summer fashion at its hottest" and they are "Bright colors, fun accessories and easy hairstyles." I don't see how being skinny, being able to wear a dress without a bra, or needing to go to the office is relevant to the point the poster is making regarding summer fashion.
I find your comment extremely rude and narrow-minded.

am i the only one that feels like 2 messy buns make this girl look silly? i dont think its chic or casual-just find it messy/for a 12yr-old. the bracelets also make me sweat in the heat..i think 4 would have been enough rather than 40. even just those pink ones would have looked great! beautiful dress, though we can see where its been pinned. :X

Hey Scott, come to Chicago for next year's Pitch Fork Festival. Hotter than hell, but so many individualistic outfits. Bright colors, hats, sunglasses, I think that you'd like seeing it. Great crowd and music. Hope to see you there next year! -Kristen (Bring Garrance! Je parlerais avec elle en français!) Thanks for your great posts. I love reading and looking at them.

Gorgeous! She looks like a modern Rossetti. Thank you so much for the inspiration – both to the woman and to Scott. Imagine my amazement at discovering an equally stunning dress in the same flame orange at a thrift store today! Received SO many complements as I made my way around town wearing it, and in 40C is was a blessing!

Tell them to try being a designer in Florida, where we have to be stylish in hot, insanely humid weather 9 months out of the year! And I'm sure there are many places that have to make it work all year long.
By the way, this look is so "I'm confident, comfortable, and stylish in hot weather and I want you to know it!" Rock it!

unfortunately, most of the lightweight dresses are made with very little support up top. I wish there were more dresses out there that were lightweight and flowy, with either enough support or enough coverage to conceal inappropriate cleavage, or bra straps. the search continues…

this is a great dress, but it’s one of those ones that only works if your like a size 6 or less. anyone bigger than that runs the risk of it looking like a maternity top.
