The guy is handsome to die but socks and sandals dont convince me at all

For me, he only gets away with it because he’s utterly gorgeous. And the socks stretched around the divider between his toes must have been uncomfortable!

Hahahha…wow, actually pulled off…possibly one of the season’s most trickiest “trends to “”pull off”" ” (extra emphasis on the irony of this cliche statement).

Not just any sandals, but Birkenstocks with a thong between the toes–not easy with socks.

The socks with these sandals give me the creeps but I love the hairy legs.

Hmmm. Never thought I’d see that in Paris. In Seattle, yes all the time! Shockingly, I don’t dislike it. I kind of like the whole look from head to toe. It’s very casual but it works.

Sorry, I am german and this combinations haunts me. A lot of men here seem to love it (preferably with white socks). Its awful and I can’t make the “fashio-jump” and see it any other way than this. So: No socks for me please…

I didn’t think I ever would like the combo of socks and sandals, but I’m into it. Free People convinced me last year. It’s time to embrace your inner camping hippie!

  44. Foteini P.

I’m sorry, but I hate his socks with sandals concept !
He is very handsome though ! :P

    ok. what’s the real story?
he had a late night at his girlfriend/boyfriend’s house. they got in a fight- she/he tossed his shoes into the seine and he had to wear the only shoes he could find. and, his feet were cold.

  49. Michael

Reading the comments it looks like a thumbs down for socks and sandals for men. But 40 years ago I saw a hippie with Mexican sandals and gray wool socks and it looked so cool I have never forgotten it.

  50. jas

    October 12, 2011 at 7:41 pm

haha you would think that would be a tad uncomfortable for his toes?? i like that he kept the outfit simple though

  51. JEAN

    October 12, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Looks good to me. I’ve never understood the aversion to the sock/sandal combo. I find very high spike heels far more unattractive. No, I’m not a hippy or an old guy on Mallorca. (Or Japanese)

  52. Liz S.

    October 12, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Some people can, some people can’t–unfortunately there are too many that can’t but insist on doing it.

Lithe, healthy, handsome, bewitching. Black and tan. This guy can.

  53. Agnes de Bethune

    October 12, 2011 at 8:28 pm

I love it. But not the puffy shorts. I’m starting to wear socks with sandals and it feels right.

  54. Purseandco

Birkenstock sandals and wool work socks is all I wear in Autumn. Except when it rains, then I wear my purple wellingtons.

Yay! Socks and sandals on the Sartorialist!
    Love when that happens.

  57. Fotautomat

    October 12, 2011 at 10:26 pm

I love his look. Serious, clan, and not many people can pull off a socked Birkenstock.

Really? I thought only guys at Walmart wore socks and sandals. Sad when this hits one of the most influential design and fashion blogs. Cummon Scott. You can do better than that.

  60. Stjulienlepauvre

    October 12, 2011 at 11:27 pm

I think I see Birkenstocks in Paris; I need to show this picture to my daughters; they wouldn’t believe it otherwise. Wow; Thanks for fascinating pic.

  64. Simone

    October 13, 2011 at 3:00 am

Ill look nel complesso è semplice quindi gradevole ma i sandali con le ciabatte a coso di essere un po’ retrogrado proprio no!

  65. tim

    October 13, 2011 at 3:04 am

if you get the proportions right it’s not a problem. birkentstocks work well because of their chunky soles. i’ve done the near duplicate…acne tshirt – chronicles of never drop crotch shorts or drkshadow cropped jeans – arizona birks…vans can work too

    try it…you’ll like it

  66. Channy Burden

    October 13, 2011 at 3:41 am

The guy is cute, but… Aaargh! Sock’s and sandals!!!!! It’s the worst! Totally clueless northern European backpacker wear.

  67. Nomadic D

    October 13, 2011 at 3:49 am

Gorgeous from head to ankle. Ankle to toe, not so much. It’s not just that it’s socks and sandals, it’s socks and birkenstocks! There’s just no way for this to be ok.

  68. Frog

    October 13, 2011 at 3:58 am

Love the black socks but really the flip flops are ugly. Now if he had Rondini sandals, it would be great. Nothing like bare feet in penny loafers with long shorts though. Great pic :)))

  69. Charikleia

    October 13, 2011 at 4:16 am

Ah. The guy with no age, this rare species.

I like his style and I feel it’s cute he looks a bit out-of-bed.

And oh, do I feel relieved. I thought I was the only one wearing Birkenstocks with socks (well… indoors and white nike socks… so it’s not the same)

    Kisses from Greece!

  71. Martine

I love socks with sandals. I mostly see them on women, of course, but OK, a guy thats good too. Interesting look on his face. I can’t make out what he is thinking. Probably ” Hm. Scott is taking the picture of me now.”

  72. Simon Brown

    October 13, 2011 at 6:05 am

A splendid look, down to about the collarbone.

By the way Pursaeandco; I’m a man and I loathe socks with sandals.

  73. Boston Guy

    October 13, 2011 at 6:44 am

I wore Bircks and socks while healing a foot problem. It’s hard to tie into an outfit but overall it was cool. Everyone hated it. The comfort is hard to beat and I would never go to the office with my toes hanging out.

  74. Umer

    October 13, 2011 at 7:08 am

Yeah, this look is ruined by the socks and sandals.

  79. Ash Saeidi

    October 13, 2011 at 11:39 am

I don’t think I have ever seen a man make socks and sandals look so good. I might just be bias though as this guy looks eerily like my husband who I think looks good in everything.

  80. anonymous

    October 13, 2011 at 12:23 pm

I think it works because of the length of his shorts and the proportions.

  81. tagatha

    October 13, 2011 at 12:52 pm

It’s cute how people get all bent out of shape about wearing socks with sandals. I’d like to remind you that for some people, it is impossible to wear any shoes in bare feet for various reasons, like medical ones. So before you point and scream, think a little beyond fashion.

The urban/basketball version of this look with calf-length athletic socks and Jordans looks fresh and modern so this does not seem off at all. Bottega V. and others have shown it on the runway and I dig it.

  85. sawan

    October 13, 2011 at 4:20 pm

This makes more sense than every short with oven hot plastic sneakers we see everywhere in summertime, in spite of the risk of stink while taking off. I appreciate the attitude, because this guy seems to know very well socks with sandals are a major “don’t” in fashion, but he goes beyond it. And he wins.

  86. sawan

    October 13, 2011 at 4:28 pm

I would like to add that I am going to wear clogs and thick socks at anytime this winter. Being european, this is my reaction to all the overworked plastic sneakers made is Asia that taint the market. People, specially girls, should appreciate much more guys with fresh feet than them who suffer all day in fashionable shoes.

Birkenstock Gizeh. Enough said, I own 4 pairs in various colors and prints and in between heels, these just save your feet. They actually look great with everything!

  90. Panuelo Vintage

Ha! I’m so anti-sock and sandal wearing but this looks as if he stepped off a runway. Awkward but flawless and cool!

Birks and socks are unbelievably comfortable and a perfect transition from Summer to Fall. I love the look of sandals with scrunched down big chunky socks. And this guy is rocking it!

As M. Da Chump poetically noted above, there’s something genuinely bohemian (as opposed to “OMG! that’s like, so cute and boho!”) about this young man’s approach. Goth Birkenstock? He says, why not?

  94. Johnny

I’m very proud of Birkenstocks, they are a good German quality product. They are nice and comfortable at home, but IF YOU HAVE TO WEAR THEM AT WORK only if you are a nurse/doctor and then you have to wear white Birkis, but never never never like this with thongs and socks.

  103. nein

    October 16, 2011 at 6:59 pm

socks and sandals are never appropriate

  104. Diane

    October 16, 2011 at 11:38 pm

oh my goodness….socks & sandals….a major FAUX PAS! It is what makes the Californians mock us Oregonians. We offend the barefeet in sandals rule all the time by wearing socks with our sandals. It is due to the nature of our climate, cool and damp, 9 months of the year. (During the two-three months of warm weather we leave our socks in our drawers).
I am always sad to put away my sandals for the year, it means that fall has truly arrived.
At least this fellow has the presence of mind to not wear white socks with his sandals.

  105. David John Minns

    October 17, 2011 at 9:30 am

Just goes to sh0w, does it not, that it’s not what you wear but how you wear it

  106. Laurel

    November 8, 2011 at 8:27 pm

Aak! My husband does this, dark socks with THONGS – ugh, hate it on him, but somehow this guy seems to have the ability to pull it off. Something about the way the socks are chunky and scrunched down and the plain black elegance of the whole ensemble combined with that confident look makes you know it was calculated cool rather than lazy and schlumpy.

  107. Maria

    November 10, 2011 at 4:54 am

Well, there’s obviously socks’n sandals- and there is this guy. It’s black on black, the coolest style of birkenstocks there is ( and I am not into them at all), hopefully a pair of japanese tabi socks with a split toe section and the whole rest of the guy. I have seen way worse being called fashionable. In the end it is always about pulling it off.

Wow! Such a nice attire! Although, he doesn’t look like he is going to drive the car later. I like what he is wearing but I don’t see myself going in such clothing if I’m going to drive.
